[Update: It seems the Financial Times wasn't entirely on the money with this one. Today at IFA, Sony did announce a new service, but it's not what was originally rumored.
It's called Music Unlimited Powered by Qriocity, a cloud-based digital music service that can be accessed by the PS3, Bravia televisions, Blu-ray disc players, Blu-ray home theater systems, and VAIO computers. Details on the service (which should launch later this year), including pricing and availability, have yet to be revealed, but it looks like a Europe-only affair for the time being.]
According to the Financial Times, Sony is set to announce a music and video service to compete with iTunes for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable. The report states that the service may be revealed as early as today.
According to the report, "sources in the media industry" are saying that the service will be subscription based, and will be unveiled at the IFA technology show in Berlin. The source points to the PS3 and PSP for the launch, with Sony adding other devices -- such as Bravia TVs, mobile phones, and Sony laptops -- in the future.
As for when the service will launch, the sources say it won't be available until 2011.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
The PSP is a joke for Video so what's the point.
Of course, thats just me, some people use their PS3's as media hubs. I just can't be arsed organising my Windows Media Centre library as well as my iTunes and XBMC libraries.
Nice idea though. All depends on the DRM.
The PSP is also a joke for music .... the fidelity is horrible, I still use my PSP for music tho because its what I have on hand. With earsubs it wasn't too bad but my cat ate my last pair and they don't sell them anymore :(
Its still passable for music and video, I watch movies on my PSP whenever I fly. Mostly appleseed because that movie roxxored.
I think they could still succeed at the venture, they just have to be wary knowing that there are other such established ventures. As such they will need to make sure they are competitive and don't pull a "We are Sony, Grovel at our feet and lavish us with teh moneys"
I'm puzzled by those saying the video and audio is horrible. Are you folks using headphones with the PSP or just using the standard speakers? Obviously the speakers suck, but I can use headphones or connect to a speaker system and the sound is glorious.
I didn't ask for this or really care for it, but I use the ps3 more than iTunes despite using my iPhone more, so maybe it'll be a good thing?
you don't even have a ps3 so why do you spend so much time and energy on ps3 boards? Let it go man. Or maybe get some therapy.
