Having the best of both worlds isn't so bad though. I like Onlive's concept of one monthly fee for access to a huge number of games you can play.
Know why it won't be Gaikai? Come on want to know? Who is making the PS4 GPU, because it is not Nvidia anymore - it is AMD. Guess who is in bed with Valve/Steam - it is AMD - they are partners (not a huge deal...but still partners.) And, some of you might not know this, but NVidia and Gainkai are in a sizable partnership.
If 2+2=5, Then PlayStation 4 + AMD = Steam Streaming service. Gabe Newell didn't waddle onto Sony's stage at e3 2010 for his health...they made a big deal..the deal, I'm convinced, was about streaming games.
I just find it strange that console makers seem to be doubling down on so many things that can and will be done better, and more easily, on things people already own.
The whole make a console and have it last for 6-10 years isn't really the best model anymore. Consoles aren't even necessarily easier to use for gaming than PCs are anymore either. After playing a few games on my brother's PC rig I just kinda want to play everything on PC instead.
Cloud as an option is fine. Mandatory cloud = not getting my money, even if the console were $10.
@Scissors
I keep with consoles for retail games because unlike on the PC, I don't have to worry about DRM. The PC will always be the best, but not if I have to ask permission to play what I paid for, even if it's just an activation after it's installed. (And no, an actual "one-time" activation doesn't exist. Go to a different PC or even upgrade your own hardware and see what happens 99% of the time.)
As someone who doesn't live in the US, meaning that 90% of these services are not offered to me and I have to pay $100 for a 10Mb/s internet connection, I hope to God this isn't the case.
This would cut me off completely.
I say maybe to Vita because the Wi-Fi in your average handheld device is significantly less capable than the Wi-Fi of your average console or desktop, let alone Ethernet. Not sure how smoothly that would run. PSP Remote Play to your PS3 at home was never fantastic to begin with.
Also, to all those saying that cloud gaming will replace everything in "the future", I'd like to introduce you to all the ISPs (mobile AND home) who are going to throttle, cap, overcharge, and cut you off for streaming HD video for hours on end.
Instead, you will put your PS3 discs inside the PS4 as a form of verification and then you will be able to stream it to your PS4. Just like the 360 lets you install games but you still need to have the disc inside for verification. Of course PSN games would be tied to your account so verification wouldn't be such a big deal.
