Rumor: Sony considering music downloads for PSP photo

According to “music industry sources” that have been whispering to CNET News, Sony is looking to offer music for the PlayStation Portable by way of the PlayStation Network. The sources tell CNET that no final deals have been made, and that talks are in the early stages.

This information supports information we heard along with our earlier rumor -- Sony’s plans to launch their new hardware, reportedly called the PSP Go!, an all digital-based handheld. Our own sources had told us of Sony’s intention to launch an iTunes-like service, both for music as well as movies and television, presumably to compete with successful products like the iPhone.

Sony already offers a broad range of films for both rental and purchase on its PlayStation Network for the PlayStation 3. While it’s offered no content from major labels, Sony has also made available its own first-party game music for download.

If Sony were to launch a fully functional music store for the PSP, would this be something you’d be interested in? Or are digital music services like iTunes or what Amazon offers enough for you? Hell, do you even buy digital music at all?

Sony tunes? Eh why not. Though with all the music pirating out there I'm not sure if this would do well.

as long as it is DRM free I'm in.
also I use homebrew for FLAC encoded tracks so an open lossless codec would be welcome.

God knows how much help I need buying music, placing music on my PSP, and keeping track of what music I have that may or may not be on my PSP at the moment. If only mass data storage devices had caught on at the consumer level.

I see no absolutely no reason to bother, Amazon has most of what I need and DRM free to boot. I certainly can't imagine Sony not slapping some kind of DRM on their offering. Why would they even try to compete at this point? Sounds like an utter waste of resources. Sony can be SO confusing :P

The main thing holding them back here is that the PSP is not a good portable music player. I should know, I used one for around 4 years. While it has a nice interface, it has no real ability to deal with a large variety of artists and albums.
In the end the best you can do with it (imo) is put on a limited number of songs (say, less than 300, so searching through them isnt too painful), all in the one MUSIC folder on the memory stick, and put it on shuffle most of the time (good for biking or other exercise, but not much else).

Its just not ideal for even a modest music library, so an online service for it wouldnt be worth the effort... unless the prices were competitive enough for people to buy on PSP, and transfer to ipod/equivalent later...

Depends what format its in. Last time Sony wanted to use dumb AAC format.

It would be nice, but my musical tastes won't be catered for, as I'm not a mainstream drone anymore.
