Jim, is this game supposed to be in full 2D, like hand drawn, or 3D from a side scrolling perspective? Or do we not know the answer to that yet?

As for Sonic 4, I'm kind of getting excited but have had so little faith in Sonic for such a long time. Then again, Sega is releasing a lot of good games lately. I quite enjoyed Bayonetta.

I would definitely play a new sonic game and a pikachu it's a sombrero game. Hopefully these games come in a bundle together.

All I know is, if this game turns out to be another disappointment, then I'm going to laugh harder and longer than no man has ever laughed before. I'm talking blood-tears and bodily functions lost. Especially since:
1) This is more than likely an official numbered Sonic entry. This is/could/should be the point of no return. If they screw this up, then________ (feel free to fill in that blank for me. Please.)
2) All my friends are Sonic fans and are looking forward to it, despite trying to act all skeptical and jaded. I can see the fanboys in them screaming like schoolgirls at a Twilight book signing.

I know that I am just being blinded by nostalgia, but I think the game should be in pixels like the STH 1-3, but if it's going to be a retail release, then yes, I expect it to be in some HD 2.5D setting.

Like everything, Sega will fuck this up. It will start with enticing videos of retro-style 2D levels. Then they will start introducing the cast of 15 characters, including Downsy the Sloth and Punchy the Kangaroo. Then the 14 year old furries will include it in their fanfiction canon and the unholy trinity will be complete.

@Drakengard: Only because they haven't messed the original franchise yet, they actually do and it's all over for Sonic IMO.
I just hope this reboot of the Pikachu in a Hat franchise actually works, because Pikachu in a Fedora was awful. Not to mention their horrible gritty spin-off, Raichu in a Backwards Baseball Cap.
RIght now, We're somewhere in the "First info on new Sonic game." Mark my words: we'll some some Sonic friends pop up before too long.
I thought that cycle only applied to the 3D games. The portable ones were usually received well enough.

Sega has already confirmed that there will be no new characters, playable or otherwise. In fact, after seeing that list of characters, I think the only other characters that would be able to make the cut are Tails and Knuckles, and I don't think many of us will have much of an objection if they are the only other characters. But I get the feeling Sonic will be the only main character in the end.

The important thing here is while we know this game will not be fucked up with the addition of pointless characters we DO know it's going to be fucked up in a more tragic way: Their bringing back speed to the series. Now, this is a problem because they seem to think speed means "Hold right, go fast as possible" which is ridiculous considering none of the Genesis games were anything like this, because, in fact, if you do hold right in those games, you WILL die. This game's quality depends on its level design, which I just highly doubt Sonic Team knows what that terms even means anymore.

You bring up a very good point, my friend. However, in Sonic Unleashed, some of the daytime level designs were damn good, the only problem with those were that they were way too short. Now, note that I said "some", because others were shit. Sonic Unleashed at least gave me hope that Sonic Team kind of remembers how to make a good game.

It's going to be just like Sonic Heroes, but with 4 player gameplay, NSMB style. Each team will control a team of 3. Sonic Team is unveiling 12 new characters accordingly.
It would not surprise me at all if Pikachu in a sombrero is, in fact, traditional, Genesis 2-D and Sonic 4. Because Mega Man 9 worked so well.
Sonic's problem goes beyond that, though. All the "good" Sonic games were about 4 hours long, at most. No one pays 60$ for a 4 hour long game anymore. So Sonic is padded into oblivion with shitty werewolf levels. Actually, a DLC Sonic game wouldn't surprise me a whole lot. Also, an almost immediate release wouldn't surprise me a lot, because...Sonic games are doomed by the hype cycle, as the graph 15 comments up shows.
