Rumor: Shin Megami Tensei PS3 game listed on Amazon photo

We could have easily seen this coming given that the MegaTen franchise is Atlus' main moneymaker, but I still can't help but be excited.

Basically all the information present is a simple product listing on Amazon.jp for "Shin Megami Tensei (Working Title)"

A new Persona game was probably a forgone conclusion, but as Siliconera points out, the Persona games (and Devil Survivor) don't use the Shin Megami Tensei title in Japan. Instead they use Megami Ibunroku, which basically means "Goddess Side Stories," denoting their status as outside of the main franchise.

What could it mean?! A new flagship title on current-gen systems, or a simple placeholder for Persona 5. Get speculating!

@ Scion

I'll go with 3 then (story tends to take priority over gameplay for me, too). I just hope the PSP remake is as good as the original PS2 version.

Either way, doesn't matter to me! As long as it is a new Shin Megami Tensei game of some sort I will be happy. :)

4 actually has a few references to 3, but only one of them is really "important," and even that one probably won't mean anything in the future. I always say start from the beginning of the series if you can and work your way forward, even if they don't really connect. There will always be throwbacks you'll miss out on if you don't.

I hope some good comes of this, amazon also relisted the Last Remnant PS3. I'm guessing it's an international edition. If Amazon is to be believed, 2010 is going to be pretty good for PS3 RPGs!

Its already been confirmed elsewhere that the Persona 4 team is working an a new, non-MegaTen RPG and that the process of Persona 4's development had them going nuts.

I seriously doubt its another Persona, its also the last thing we need another installment of.

I also question it being a main series MegaTen game, as they jsut produced one for the Nintendo and they don't fullow up main series installments this quickly. Also, if you want to debate SJ's status as a main series entry, please refer to SJ's website where it's history is placed against SMT, SMT II, SMT: If... and SMT III: Nocturne. It is indeed main series and as evidenced in SMT: Nocturned, SMT is a multiverse of worlds, so it doesn't have to be in continuity to any other game in the main series.

Tagging Nocturne with a III was misleading anyway. It wasn't a follow up to SMT II.

Its interesting news, but quite frankly, SMT is too good for the PS3 audience.

A new SMT - dare I hope? With Kaneko still providing main character designs hopefully (crosses fingers and toes)? I would be more psyched about this than any other RPG this year, if its the case.

The prospect of a new game in the vein of Nocturne on the PS3 has me twitching in anticipation. Persona games are fun but I want some more of Nocturne... (A new spinoff like DDS would be great too, I <3 them)

Also "SMT is too good for the ps3 audience?" lol?

If it is indeed true, I'm just hoping Atlus has spent their money wisely on it. SMT has never risen above a cult following, which is OK because it really doesn't have to, but its still hard not to feel like Atlus is just casting pearls before swine.

SMT games tend to be the antithesis of the modern presentation elements PS3 gamers mindlessly crave. No acting, dialog is sparse and even more frightening for those bred of JRPG is that choice actually matters and the games bear actual challenge that you can't maxh X to win on. SMT main series games have a very western perspective, making me reluctant to tag them as JRPGs.

At any rate, the only Persona product I want right now is a remake of Persona 2: Innocent Sin/Eternal Punishment. We don't really need a Persona 5, the dev team almost went insane making Persona 4. It was the story-planning that made it difficult, characters had to be in certain places on certain days and then the weather could affect whether they showed up or not. It was said to be rather maddening to design.

Wouldn't surprise me if the went back to moon phases.

@Dreamsowner - I say its too good for PS3 and their JRPG fanboys because SMT games are much more cerebral and go against the grain in having a more western perspective. If they really appreciated the series, it would have risen above cult status well before Persona 3 came about.

I'd like to see some Persona 5 for the PS3, but if it's actually a main-world game, it could be another Raidou Kuzunoha/Devil Summoner game. I doubt it's a SMT5 considering Strange Journey is just on the cusp of being released.

@The Silent Protagonist I just don't see what the console itself has to do with a statement like that because the "lack of appreciation for *insert niche game* on X console" can be applied to any console. I am pretty happy just to hear that they are working on another SMT title since the franchise is so great. Atlus has been casting pearls before swine long before this, thank god companies like them exist and RIP Working Designs.

I just don't think games need to "rise above cult status" in order to validate their goodness, in order for that to happen compromises would probably have to be made to appease more tastes and be careful what you wish for there. IMO P3 and P4 had subtle compromises that made them more appealing to more people but that is neither here nor there.

Again, I am glad that this news means they are hopefully working on a new title. I really don't care what console they come out on, as long as they keep 'em coming.

@The Silent Protagonist. Is it really the jrpg fanboys who don't appreciate it? Or is it the fact that Atlus, when they publish these games send out very little to retail, making these games very rare and expensive. Its Atlus who keeps them in cult statis.

Atlus has done a number of reprints for Nocturne (3), DDS (2), DDS2 (2) and Persona 3. Well Persona 3 just had a newer version, that's more of a reissue.

I just hear so many Sony gamers in the series sounding interested in the series, but they seldom follow-through on that interest because they think Atlus should be like everyone else, have big production values, voice overs and publish lots of copies.

Atlus is still around because they don't focus heavily on these points. They aren't trying to be Final Fantasy, but that doesn't mean they should be overlooked for it, either.

We all like seeing our favorite games succeed, I just don't see PS3 as an environment where games like this can thrive. PS2 was an environment where it could, but PS3 is no PS2.

@The Silent Protagonist, well it seems that you don't know that the 360 isn't popular in japan(where the game is supposed to be in developement), that's why there is demon's souls or 3d dot game heroes, it is not the "PS3 audience" the target of the game, it is the "japanese audience", which by an unknown reason prefers the ps3 over the 360, this doesn't mean that the 360 won't get the game, there is a clear example of that with final fantasy 13, it is PS3 only in japan, but here in america, there is going to be a 360 version.

@NwrksBigBoss

I don't know about this expensive business. I just recently got into the persona series and bought p4 at my local gamestop for a cool 30 dollars new. Granted, it was the last one in the store, but I have to say, for the game I got, 30 dollars is a fucking bargain to say the least. Maybe you were talking about some of the older titles, and I can see where you coming from there, but p1 and p3 are on the psp now. I mean, so they didn't re-release the p2 games. That's not THAT big of an oversight is it?

@Silent Protagonist

I think your neglecting the potential of a new audience that a system change could grant. I put off playing p4 for the longest time because I didn't have a ps2 anymore. Putting a game on the ps3 almost necessarily promises a greater audience as there are all the kids who didn't have ps2s to begin with and the people who already love megaten will either have or get a ps3.

@eddacosta - I am not against it coming out on PS3 like you seem to want to think, I just think its wasted on the current-gen console audience. And what audience it has gained seems to only care about the Persona series, not the actual Shin Megami Tensei main series.

I want to see the franchise go somewhere it can be profitable and still succeed., I don't think PS3 is that platform.

Also, Demon's Souls and 3D Dot Heroes are games published by and not made by Atlus. Without the desire to publish them from Atlus USA, From Software would have never released them in the states. They would have just kept on bringing Armored Core games.

I don't want Persona 5. Persona 3 is pretty much the game that made me love video games again, but...I think, between 3 and 4, they have succinctly sucked the marrow out of that presentation of the game.

I could see something in the vein of Digital Devil Saga; SMT games are at an all time high in popularity, and something like that could really sell, at this point. Something with a more character driven story. I mean, personally, I'd like a proper SMT5 (because Strange Journey is supposed to be 4), but I don't think that's likely.

Nocturne served as a cornerstone for a lot of the assets in the PS2 generation of the series, I'd also assumed they'd use a new entry in the series to do so again.

If they really want to introduce PlayStation gamers, its best done with a main series entry because we've seen a big resurgence in western RPGs and main series SMT makes a stronger appeal to the freedoms of western RPGs than it does the typical JRPG while retaining a harder edge to it.

Digital Devil Saga does share that gameplay edge, but both it and Persona are much more traditional JRPGs, even though there is a degree of choice and ways to customize the story experience they are a bit more less focused on alignments and Persona much less about character customization outside of the main character.

GOOD GOD.
PLEASE BE SHIN MEGAMI TENSEEI 4.
The main series is much deeper, darker, religious and philosophical than the spin-offs (Persona, Devil Summoner, etc.), and thus would likely benefit more from the power of the PS3 than a spin-off. If you played the first Shin Megami Tensei and Nocturne, you would know just how epic it will look. Wow, I'm just pumped to look at all the demons (personae, for the newbies) in their current-gen glory. Also, could this be the first true SMT game with voice acting? Hmmmm... I just hope its minimal, for the sake of atmosphere.

If a new MegaTen is coming out, just let it be in the veins of Nocturne,please......

For every single Persona game created,I have found some Persona fans who go around blabbering about its greatness,as if it is greater than Jesus.Sheesh.I just want something like Nocturne or Digital Devil Saga to be created once more.Close to no comedy, serious and solid gameplay,hard-ass difficulty, gloomy music, and an epic storyline involving Abrahamic gods. That's all I request

(Note:I'm not a goth.I'm just trying to get over the moe anime's this current season has to offer.)
