RUMOR: Sega Saturn on Virtual Console? photo

As always, read the headline. RUMOR. RUMOR. RUMOR. OK, now for all you Europeans: RUMOUR. RUMOUR. RUMOUR.

Righto. Now that we've driled that into all our heads, let's see what Rumor Reporter has for us this week:

The rumor comes from fellow reader Fei34 who claims that a fellow DigiPen employee told him that Sega Saturn games would indeed be making an appearance on the Wii. Although this could still be wells away from becoming true, the fact that DigiPen, a highly respected video-game school in Redmond Washington, has this sort of knowledge is pretty intriguing. Especially by the fact that both Nintendo of America’s offices and DigiPen’s campus actually interconnects by a simple hallway. Could Fei34’s DigiPen source have even closer access to NOA’s employees in which he/she may have gotten the information?

The only thing that Fei34 left me was a confirmation that a “big game was coming.” Whether that’s a Sega Saturn game (like Panzer Dragoon Saga) or not, only time will tell. So don’t dismiss Nintendo’s systems on the Virtual Console as being cemented just yet.

Sega Saturn on the Virtual Console? That sounds waaaay too good to be true, and judging by the source, it probably is. Once again, this is a RUMOR, but in the event that it isn't, this is probably the smartest move Nintendo has made in YEARS. Virtual-On on the Virtual Console ... hell yeah!

there was a rumour going around from a UK magazine about something new but i thought it was confirmed as C64 games. Saturn games wouldnt download onto the flash memory thereby forcing you to get an SD card which i dont see happening.. also the n64 games are insanely overpriced and these will probably cost more

If Sega Saturn came to the VC that would be awesome! I never owned one and always wanted to play Guardian Heroes and Legend of Oasis, among other titles..

It's spelled rumour in every English-speaking country EXCEPT the United States.

Loved Virtual On in the arcade, would be awesome to see it on the Wii, loved the control scheme for it.

Oh well lets hope the rumor mill is right this time.

mo1518: At least we don't have to spell the word check as cheque.

I pity the foreign nations!

Nintendo better strike a deal to make that happen before Sony or MS tries.

Is it also a rumour that Nintendo doesn't accept cheques?

I hope we get NIGHTS.
This rumor may be an educated guess but may be true.
NES-Sega Master System?
SNES-Genesis
N64-Saturn?

We already have one of Sega's Systems. Also it would be odd if the Wii could play Dreamcast Discs in the future.

In this part of Europe we don't speak English, got no clue what a rumour is. I do know that Sega Saturn coming to the VC is very good news, next time my friend starts talking about Nights again, I can finally give him an answer back besides the usual "never played that".

Even I don't think it's true (just a complete game would need more than the intern memory of Wii) I only can say two words (just in case): GIVE NIGHTS!

It depends if the games were rewritten. Playstation and Sega Saturn games had virtually no compression, and therefore would take up a tiny fraction of the space they currently do it they were to be made today. Unfortunately, with the way Nintendo appears to be doing it, they don't seem like they will be remade just for the VC. Although, not all Sega Saturn games took up a full disc either.

Like Ballistic90 said, if you compress the file for Saturn games then you could fit it for VC. They are doing it for Playstation games and the PSP so I think it should be easy to put to the Wii.

Don't know how likely this will happen but if it does, please sell all three parts of Shining Force III. I completed the first one and I want to know what happens next.

If so, then Segata Sanshiro should come back and start smacking people around with a Wiimote.

What, nobody's mentioned Panzer Dragoon?

Actually, Milofo, those PS games aren't being compressed at all. The original games simply didn't use the whole disc in the first place. If they were actually compressed properly, they'd be much, MUCH smaller (not much bigger than an N64 game).

Why not? Such expansion of the game repertoire could serve to make the consumers (US) happier and thereby increase their(Ninetendo) profits!

Well Bleep, compression does take a lot more effort than any other VC game for the Wii as they would need to extract the individual media and compress them manually. If they did, they would probably charge them for more than any other VC game.

I also would get NiD...

...but Nintendo will have a really REALLY hard time emulating all of the quadrilaterals (instead of triangles).

Seriously. It's one of the reasons why game were so hard to develop for the Sega Saturn(tm).

What I would love to see is the Wii play the discs. That would be incredibly awesome.

Oh no, it would costa like 15 dollars a game? An arm? An leg? More ripping off goodness from Nintendo!

Guys, where are they going to download the games to? Not the internal flash - it's too small. Not removable storage - it's not secure (you could copy it). And they're not going to just let you play the old discs, because there's no money in that for Nintendo. This would be awesome for Nintendo to do, but it just isn't going to happen. :[

Even the fastest PCs have a difficult time emulating the Saturn with it's multiple CPU design. I don't see this happening on the Wii. Would be nice though.
nightmareci's Avatar - Comment posted on 12/13/2006 02:53

Correct indirect, the parallelism of the multi-CPU and multi-GPU of the Saturn heavily prevents even the best programmers from making a decently optimized Saturn emulator. Considering just that limitation, it'd actually be more likely that Dreamcast games would come, not Saturn, because the Dreamcast, although more powerful, is much easier to emulate, because it operates more like regular single-CPU/single-GPU systems do. I'd be happy to see games from either system because I've never got to play NiGHTS Into Dreams, although I own a Saturn and should buy a copy (Model 1 woes, non-moddable)...

And don't ever get your hopes about putting in a Dreamcast or Saturn disc, the Dreamcast used a proprietary GD-ROM format, and the Saturn's only verification method involves reading an extra ring of data on the edge of the disc outside normal CD-ROM space, so Nintendo wouldn't have any way to verify you have legal copies. Plus, the whole "they don't make profits" part of that.

I heard that a few arcade games may eventually be released via the Virtual Console.

Please God let them bring out Jambo! Safari using the Wiimote functionality somehow....
