Rumor: PSP2 revealed on January 27 photo

According to the omnipresent ANONYMOUS SOURCE, Sony is set to officially unveil the PlayStation Portable successor console on January 27. The long-rumored, practically-confirmed, might-as-well-not-be-kept secret PSP2 has been a long time coming, and it would seem we're finally getting to see it soon.

According to various sources, a press event in Tokyo will see the PSP2. The timing seems to deliberately coincide with a Nintendo press event on January 19, which indicates Sony is planning to take the wind out of the 3DS' sails.

So, I guess we'll have to check back later this month to see just how true it all is.

PSP2 announced on Jan 27th in Tokyo [MCV]

I'm going to laugh as people who called the 3DS "too expensive" watch as the PSP2 is $400.

And for some reason my post didn't go through.

As I said in it, about time. Better have a decent launch lineup.

I wouldn't be surprised if they ended up revealing the PS Phone instead. That device has been so exposed lately, they should just announce it already.

But PSP2 announcement would be nice, just to be done with it.

I'll be excited to see what the specs are, I'm excited for a new PSP, as I play my 3000 more than anything else (and buy all my games digitally when I can). It would be crazy for Sony not to have at least Digital BC with this console.

If I were Sony, I sure as hell would announce the PSP2 sometime between January 19 and the March 3DS release, so though this is just a rumor, it sounds about right. Good play, marketing people.

The PSP2 won't actually be sold for money. Sony will accept indentured servitude contracts, or various internal organs should you meet a high genetic standard. It will NOT operate on battery power. It must be plugged in at all times, and a special cable will be required to hook directly into the power grid.

Is a PSP phone and PSP2 possible? I wouldn't think that Sony would segment their base like that and have the PSPhone be the PSP2. (phone contracts and all)

@ACE329 Personally I think the "PSP phone" is just a Sony Ericsson phone with PSP controls and maybe mini's support.

The PSP2 however, OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG. So excite. Cannot wait.

I still play my PSP loads, well i did until i got Game Dev Story on my phone....

It would be nice if we had a few morsels to chew on to make this worthy of skipping out on 3ds. As it stands, they are being their typically too ballsy selves trying to compete for attention against a system we have at least seen in action. Only sony would try to pull off a move this bad.

Oh yeah. Between this and the 3DS my gaming needs will be incredibly well taken care of. I am SERIOUSLY excited to see what games they will have in store for launch.

Why would Sony announce the PSP2 at they're own small event in Japan, when they just had the mainstream world press eyes on them at CES last week? Or why not just wait unit GDC in March? Seems like a wasted opportunity, but whatever!

Doubtful. There's already been more than 100 games announced for the 3DS.

I seriously can't think of anything the PSP2 could do that the 3DS doesn't. Sure, the PSP2 could beat the 3DS in graphics, but the 3DS graphics are perfectly fine for sure a small screen that anything better would just be unnecessary. PSP2 could have 3D and touch screen but the 3DS beats them to it. I don't know. Sony is going to have to do something more then a graphical powerhouse to convince me to want a PSP2.

We already know it's going to be ridiculously expensive. What I'm curious about is whether it uses physical media.

Yes? Buy. No? No.

I'll go out on a limb and predict the 3DS will crush the PSP2 in units sold and in revenue.

However, they won't be able to launch it this year due to switching their battery packs to a new 5.5 hour model.

I was an early adopter of the DS; then saw my friend play a PSP, and was instantly swayed by the sexy graphics and flashy UI. How mistaken I was.

Not this time Sony. The 3DS is some good shit, and I won't get fooled again.

Wow, so much hate for a product that hasn't even been revealed. Gamers can be kind of creepy. Some of them remind me of the rednecks to puff up at one another about "Ford vs. Chevy".

They pretty much had to do this, whether it's ready or not. They want people to stop and consider before automatically buying a 3DS. I know I'm going to be open-minded about it, and at least compare the two side by side. Of course, I never buy a gaming system at launch, anyway, so I would have done that regardless.

lol @ all the people that blindly hate on the PSP. Hating on Sony makes you cool, so keep it up!

While you guys bitch and whine about how much you dislike Sony, I'll be planning to buy a 3DS and a PSP2, it sure is nice to have money for both.

i personally think there won't be a psphone and psp2. i think they are one in the same. think about it. delivering 2 sku's right from the get go is a bad idea, from a marketing and sales standpoint. and i'm willing to bet there is some hardware in there for 3D in future games. there i said it.

Ooooohhhh I loves me PSP, and the rumors about the PSP2 make me horny. Thinking about what the price tag might be slows the blood down a smidge, but with all the other awesome shit hitting shelves in 2011 I'm sure I can hold out for a drop.

If a PSP2 is announced, I probably won't get it for quite some time seeing as I only got a PSP at Peace Walker's release. So unless it really impresses me I'm going to hold off on it for a while.

Well, let's see if Sony can pull this off.
With all the 3DS news we've been getting, they better show something mind-blowing. Great hardware with some nice launch titles, or else they have a really big chance of failing really hard.
Show the thing already!

I can't wait to see the specs, graphics and games for this thing. I never thought I would care too much for a portable device since I already own a PS3, 360, and Wii. Man was I wrong, and there are so many good games still to come for the PSP this year. I'm a big RPG player, so the PSP was a perfect fit for me. PSP2 don't disappoint!

Okay. Two joysticks, physical media, good graphical processors, a reasonable price, at least 5-6 hours of battery life and SONY KEEP OUT OF IT will make this the handheld all the PSP fans have been dreaming of. Yes, it should be okay as long as it fulfills these requirements. Of course, the last one will probably be ignored making the earlier ones null and void, but, you know, YOU CAN ALWAYS DREAM. (Plays Robot Unicorn Attack)
Okay, all joking aside, hopefully this will have two joysticks. That is all I ask. I think Sony learned their lesson with the PSP Go (Long live UMDs), and uber HD graphics? They'd be nice, but they don't make the system nor the game. Reasonable price? I have no doubt it'll start off outrageous but lower down. Battery life? Yes, please make it at least 6 hours. The fact that the 3DS has how much? 3 hours? 4 hours (maybe?) of battery life made me very skeptical of the system as a whole. And one last thing. Sony, please just.... I don't know. Don't screw it up. I love my PSP, but there are serious faults. Fix them with the PSP2. That is all.
