Rumor: PSP2 games will look like early PS3 titles photo

Yet more fuel for the PSP2 rumor fire is yours today, with another graphical boast for the as-yet-unannounced system. According to the latest gossip, PSP2 games will look so good, they'll rival early PS3 games for visual impressiveness.

"As far as graphics are concerned, the PSP2 is a beast, packing enough processing hardware to produce graphics comparable to early PlayStation 3 titles," says IGN, via a mysterious source. "The processor, we're told, is just over half as powerful as the PS3, though the specific framework of the cores and the clock speed was not revealed.

"While the device isn't as powerful as the PlayStation 3, its components should allow it to sufficiently play games of comparable graphical quality due to the fact that it is rendering to a smaller, lower-resolution display than a full 1080p HDTV."

So yeah, I think we've all gotten by now that the PSP2 is going to have some good looking games. All that's left is for Sony to get off its arse and announce the bloody thing.

If this is true the thing is going to cost something like $300-400.

No thanks.

@jawshoeuh:

If you think the PSP2 is going to cost under $300 regardless of what the system specs are then you are crazy.

PSPgo anyone?

I'm no expert, but what about lowing the graphics just a tiiiny bit. I think people would appreciate a low price and longer battery life more. I appreciate good graphics, but not on a tiny screen. It's not like I buy BluRay movies to watch on my iPod.

The price of this thing will be fucking retarded. Which makes me fucking retarded, because I'll still end up getting one. Sigh, I love my handheld games.

So they are going even deeper into micro boutique niche products. It should come with wireless key locking standard. So parents can lock it remotely. And software so it locks on a repeating schedule.

That would be a technological step forward.

Early PS3 games = High-res PS2 games. Same case with early 360 games.

If it's all digital, then no thanks. If it doesn't slide shut to protect the screen, then no thanks. If it's line-up consists of rehashed PS3 games, then no thanks.

I doubt it'll be able to do low-end ps3 quality games. One of the reasons for that is storage space, the one reason why all the developers who decide to rag on the 360 all shoot for "dvd space is too small for those kind of visuals" so really how are these games/this system going to put most of what a PS3 can do in a smaller place but somehow the developers can't with the 360? I mean really, think about that for a second and how ridiculous it sounds.

And thats just visuals, thats not even counting sound and everything else involved with a good game. This PSP2 is either going to have to-expensive-for-a-handheld games or its going to be extremely expensive itself because its cost is going to be weighed down by tons of flash memory -which all depends on the route their taking to bring us the games.

So honestly I don't think this rumor has any merit. Maybe mid to late PS2 quality games, but not early PS3.

All that's left is for them to make it actually work as a portable in terms of heat, battery life, and cost, you mean...

I know they're going to nail the graphical and hardware stuff most likely, and that's nice and all, but the thing I'm really more anxious about is whether they'll find some way to hold off even a fraction of the incredible piracy on the system compared to the original, without overly inconveniencing legitimate users. That's really the only way we'll see a consistent stream of good games made and/or localized for it.

As for whether it ends up download only... that's been the main model for so long on PC now with steam and other services, it still amazes me somewhat how much people cling to their boxes and plastic. I like collecting things too, but at a certain point in life you tend to realize that you really don't need more space-consuming stuff in order to make a project legitimate.

Oh, and I don't really give a shit about HD visuals, which is one reason why portable gaming has worked well for me so far in the first place. I'm a firm believer in art direction over hardware for making a game look good. Even pre-NES games could have a certain beauty to them with good design.

Sony shouldn't make the same mistake again and just make a portable that's almost as powerful as it's console counterpart

The PSP has fantastic graphics Birth by Sleep and Ghost of Sparta look as good as PS2 games, but only a few great games have been made for the system, because developers ignored it and made ps2 games instead

Most developers will ignore it and make PS3/360 games instead unless the new psp does something the PS3 can't do like touchscreen and stuff like that

The 3ds is going to be in the $300 range. The PSP2 is going to be significantly more, while having terrible battery life, and using memory stick as a storage medium.

I'll believe it, when I see it. Are these the same developers who said that 3DS games will look like a 360 game? Sure 3DS games looks great, but by no means is the 3DS as powerful as a 360. So what kind of battery life would the PSP2 have, if it had the power to looks as good as a PS3 game? Like a hour at best. LOL!

It was hinted at that you will be able to play your PS3 games on the PSP2 and vice versa; you won't have to buy separate games. I think the EA guy said something about that.

isn't it kind of insulting to fans of the PS3, err I mean people broke after buying the PS3 and all of its games, to know that there is going to be a smaller, sleeker, portable system out there that is essentially capable of playing the same games?

I mean fuck. Moore's law fucks us all over, but can't Sony just make us not suck their asian cocks any more?
