Rumor: PSP-4000 mentioned in new Sony ads photo

A new ad for LittleBigPlanet PSP accessories has made reference to a PSP-4000, leading to speculation that a brand new PlayStation Portable is in the works. The ad is about a range of LBP-branded items for your PSP, and the 4000 model is quite plainly mentioned.

On its own, this would be considered a printing error or forgery. However, add to this the fact that rumors have been circulating for a while concerning a new PSP with a returning UMD drive, and you have yourself a very tasty foundation upon which to build your gossip mountain.

A new PSP with a UMD drive would pretty much confirm the PSPgo as a failed experiment, and it's sure to be better than that ill-advised piece of kit. That said, do we really need a fifth PSP model? That would be taking it too far, and I think we've gone far enough already.

What do you reckon? Could the market stand to have another PSP?

The only number the next iteration of the PSP should have after it is "2."

Ugh, Sony. This is the exact kind of crap that killed Sega in the 90's. Just give us a couple of stable SKU's and hold off on putting out new hardware until there is a significant change in the offering.

This is kinda annoying cause I just bought a 3000 a few months ago, but I'm pretty sure it's not gonna be a huge upgrade.

2nd analog stick or I send it back... Seriously though, I hope they do some major upgrades to the system. Its been almost two years since my PSP broke, and I still have no desire to buy another one.

If they made it in the design of the GO but added a UMD slot... I'd buy it.

Actually, that said, i'd still be weary that a PSP2 would be right around the corner.

ARRRRGH!

Sony's definitely got my qriocity as to what the hell they're smoking these days. I don't even know what kind of features this thing will have and I already know that only the most diehard of diehard Sony-ists will buy it...

I bought my 3000 a little over a month ago and I've been completely happy with it. I mean, what more is there to upgrade? Make it smaller and more uncomfortable to hold than it already is? Make it...quieter? It seems like they're just trying to say "HAHA REMEMBER THE PSPGO WASN'T THAT A FUNNY JOKE? WE ACTUALLY LOVE UMDS NOW GIVE US YOUR MONEY PLZ"

Sony can always market the PSP, but it's not going anywhere. We just don't care for the damn system.

nope, thank you but no thanks. Im happy with my 1000, I can buy used UMD disc and resell them if I want them to.

Only thing I will buy from sony is a PSP2 with PS2-3 graphics, touch screen, accelerometer, built-in web cam for videos and pictures and augmented reality. If it doesn't have any of these features then im not interested because my phone can do this stuff and the PSP cant.

Put all the features of the Go in a 4000, I'd buy the shit out of it if I can keep my UMDs.

I'm betting it's gonna basically be a PSP-3000 with bluetooth and whatever else the PSPgo has. That way they can use that feature and force all of us to upgrade if we want to use those extra features in the games.

wait what's wrong with sony's methods? am i mistaken in thinking that every new system they launch replaces the old one, and that they all essentially have the same functionality except for minor changes? i've never shopped for portable systems, so i don't know how they actually do it, but i assume that they don't give you the option of buying a PSP-1000, 2000, 3000 or a (soon) 4000... it's just whatever the latest model is... if they keep improving them and selling them for the same price as the last model, then what is everybody complaining about? new customers that go for a PSP will just have a better system for the same amount of money... it's kind of like how people who buy PS3s now get the slimmer version (albeit not backwards compatible and with less USB ports) of the old one...

I would kind of like the expanded memory of the Go with the ability to play my UMDs, bit honestly, I'll probably wait until the PSP2. If it ever comes.

Because it's Sony, not Apple, Nintendo, Microsoft, Adobe, Alias Wavefront, Dell, HP, Kenmore, or pretty much anyone who makes electronic devices and/or software. They haven't earned the right to obsolete echnology on on yearly basis yet. Now where's my iPhone 3Gs Ultra Deluxe Megazord?

What I'd like is a PSP 3000 meets PSPGo Hybrid, that'd finally convince me to upgrade from my 'Slim and Lite'.

Sony probably has about 3-6 months to get their shit together an at least announce the next PSP (the actual next one, not an update). The new DS will have been announced by then, with details, and people will care less about the PSP than they already do. And even if by some miracle Nintendo doesn't announce anything, nobody will want to buy another PSP because they will be expecting the PSP2 to be announced any time.

I just wanted the PSPgo priced at a reasonable $150 USD. Sony had already been marking down some titles like "Prinny" down to just $10, and the major reduction in load times and the ability to make a temporary save state at any time with any game looks to be a great feature. If this newest model allows installations of PSP games that require the original UMD to act as a key to run it, like the Xbox 360 does, I would have to wait for that one then. Too bad, really. I wanted the PSPgo to succeed, I truly did.

@KingSigy

Speak for yourself... the PSP is a great system and the recent boon in games makes me want one.
I'm just not prepared to buy one now with the promise of an improved version on the horizon.

@Crunshii

I like all your ideas except the touch screen. No way do we need a touch screen on the device... it won't add anything a second analogue stick couldn't handle.

Give me a PSPgo 2.0 with a second analog stick, wireless-g, longer battery life (with a replaceable battery), and USB connectivity and I'll buy it day one. None of these things is really all that difficult.

Even at $250, a GOOD PSPgo would be worth it.

As it stands, I'm more interested in getting a PSP-3000 to replace my aging 1000.

They should time the PSP-4000's release to coincide with a new Monster Hunter PSP game. Then they can bundle them together for crazy sales in Japan. It'll sell above expectations(in Japan), even if people already have PSP-3000's or the GO version. It doesn't really matter whether it sells well in the US or not.

Well, what does the PSP need to be awesome?
1 - second analogue stick/thumb thingy.
2 - no problem with dropping the UMD, but it needs to allow you to pull your existing games from a UMD to the PSP.
3 - MOAR STORAGE. Seriously, minimum of 32gb, preferably double.
4 - Any chance of it being just a little more ergonomic? (talking more about the PSP Go style here)

That is the power of LBP stickers.

If you put stickers at the bottom of a cliff people would leap in to get them.

As for PSP versions- snow has a longer life span. Why don't they just hardwire 1 game into the thing like in the old days?

I wouldn't say pspgo is a failed experiment. The psp4000 is only replacing the psp3000. The PSPgo has always been a side project. I'm predicting the PSP4000 to containg 16gb of internal memory, includes a UMD drive and be $250 and the PSPGo will drop to $200

@everyone asking for a second analogue stick on the PSP(at least 3 people):
I don't mean to be rude, but what the fuck are you thinking? This isn't going to ever happen. Please stop asking for it, because it's getting really fucking annoying. They are not going to add that kind of functionality to a new SKU. It would just be the PSP2. People have been asking for 2 sticks for like 2 years now, and it's driving me nuts. If you're going to ask for it, at least say you want it on the PSP2. Don't say you want it in an update to the PSP. Then it wouldn't be the PSP, would it?

sony seriously needs to stop squeezing all this money out of the psp it is done!!!! please i hope they do not make a psp 4000. they need a brand new psp"2" not anout psp-4000. psp users need better graphics a better browser 2 joysticks on their psps an maybe they same amount of buttons as the regular playstation controller. maybe a touchscreen wed be nice? i dont really mind the umd's but some people hate them
