Rumor: PS3 Slim? Already?

Rumor: PS3 Slim? Already? photo

Yeah, I don't know either. But at least T3 gives us something really interesting to look at while we imagine it.

According to Gizmodo, an insider at T3 says that Sony is working on a slim and trim PS3 revamp for a Fall release. Of course, none of this is confirmed, but I can say that their mockup looks amazing. Maybe the rumored 160 and 120GB models we mentioned earlier will sport a new, slim profile. Maybe not.

The current PS3 is like a plus-sized girl that's attractive. She's obsessed with her appearance, but she could stand to shed a few pounds. If that does happen, the Xbox 360 will look awkward alongside the new PS3 and the Wii.

The reworking of all Sony consoles comes in time, but it seems a bit early for a PS3 reworking. All I know is that I've totally lost count of PS3 SKUs already.

For those still on the fence, would a slimmer PS3 win you over? Would a $300 slimmer PS3 win you over?

PS3 slim would be so cool, but I dont think the technology is there yet, maybe in like a year or 2

If a slim PS3 comes out I'll probably get it. Unless its way too expensive which it probably will be.

I know I lost count of the PS3 skus, but that was after losing count on the 360 skus combined with a who-gives-a-rats-ass about number of skus

Shit
I already own a PS3 and a slim PS3, provided no bells and/or whistles were cut, would have me buying a second one. I'm a sucker for fancy gadgets in sexy cases. And really, look at the (I know its fake) picture. Hot.

It keeps reminding me of a Wii. With an extra bit of cardboard on the side.

But then considering how PS3s currently look like this would be an upgrade.

That thing is fucking ugly.

I'm happy with the 60GB fattie I've got in my living room, but honestly all I want is a white one. Then it could look pretty while it collects dust, instead of ugly and collecting dust.

Interesting. They're probably making the power supply external. If you factor in the 360 power brick the consoles are similar in size.

I don't mind the heft of the current PS3; it was smaller than I thought it would be, and fits in nicely with my other components.

But given that the slim Blu-ray drive is relatively recent, and that Sony is probably leary of changing the cooling setup until the cell die size is reduced because of all the heat issues Microsoft has had, I don't a slim model will be the next SKU. Maybe for the holidays.

The lower price point would help more than the slimmer profile, but I still wouldn't get one yet. Gotta see how MGS4 does first.

So sony's old tactics come out again? The old, "BUY THE SAME EXACT THING AGAIN! ...except smaller" Yeah theres a difference between offering an upgraded system like the elite or PS3 80gb, but just scaling something down and re offering it is just a cheap way to sucker people into buying it again to boost sales figures, same with the PS1 and 2

I like this better than the current monstrosity, but it won't win me over just yet. I don't know when or if it ever will. I've actually had more Sony products die on me than Microsoft products, so while people whine about the 360 I have more reason to fear Sony's products.

haha nice mock up, but will never happens. first of all they would have to have a brick like the xbox and second they would have to change to 'laptop' hard disks.Give it 5 years then maybe, the cooling on the current chips define the case, so until Cell and the nvidia chip cuts down too 35nm for example this is a no no.
Looks bollox any way!

@TorpedoTed: PS3 already uses a 2.5" laptop HDD. But I agree with you on reducing the die size.

I must say that I've already purchased the larger blacker PS3. I must confess however that what I look for in a console is much like what Sir Mix-a-lot looked for in his ladies.

I enjoy large posteriors and I that is not a falsehood friends.

On a serious note, that mockup is cool and all but I see not oppertunaty to convert it into a George Forman grill type apperatus. Do Not Want.

I'm going for a 60gb just because of PS2 backwards compat. I could give a shit less for aesthetics, I want features I will actually use.

I don't care how slim it gets, if it's over $400 and not backward-compatible, I don't want it.

I vote fakest fake that ever faked a faking fake. I don't really give a shit about all these SKUs anyway. The main thing I wanted, namely backwards compatibility(so I could retire my PS2), never really happened in europe anyway. If only sony paid as much attention to their software as they did their hardware.

I might buy it when the price drops by another 100 bucks, till then I'll just wait. Shouldn't a slim version be cheaper?

Also, on that note, out of all their ridiculous SKU confusions did they drop the one model that actually made it a better system/value? I don't want janky emulation, I wants me some emotion engine!

Oh, and Wifi and Blutooth and all those fucking ports... but that's just me, perhaps I'm crazy.

DTwirler, you're still worried about backwards compatibility? It was screwed up to begin with, it never worked well and games look terrible on it.

Well, I felt I needed to chime in, and just say that I"m very happy with my 60 GB one... its not like their discontinuation wasn't shown in many places. Admittedly, it oould stand a reduction in size, but as opposed the backwards compatibilty offered by later models, I'm happy with what I have.

YOu people whine about cost, they got the cost down, and look to be going even further. Then, you say you want all the features back that enabled them to get the cost down... its like they can't win here.

The people who want BC with PS2 games will pay for it now, those who are willing to wait shouldn't be surprised at the cost reductions, in order to entice them to buy one.

The Spanish SKU with Drake's and R&C packed-in would win me over way sooner than a slimline model. Then again, those are currently are currently the only two games on the system I wanna play, so maybe that's just me, though.

I could believe it. Part of the reason the PS3 is so big (and the reason it gets so damn hot) is because it has an internal power supply.

If they had an external power brick, like the 360 (and slim PS2) they could slim the thing down quite a bit. Also keep in mind they just recently made the announcement about the smaller form factor Blu-ray laser units.

Making a system smaller like this is as much a move to draw in new consumers as it is a means of lowering the production costs of the system. That is something Sony desperately needs to do. This definitely makes sense. Whether it's real or not...who knows.

Does Sony do this slim thing on purpose? Holding out until they've gotten the majority of the initial buyers, and then release a slimmer one to hook those that got away?

Jesus christ, Sony is desperate to move some consoles. I don't have a PS3 at the moment, but I most likely will within the next year. When I do get one I'll be picking up the 60GB with full backwards compatibility, none of this other stuff is interesting to me if it can't play all of the older playstation games properly.

This is kind of a turn off for me (I mean besides it being a PS3). I've never set any of my systems up vertically, and this seems like you just wouldn't be able lay it down. Maybe you could, I dunno. But I always lay them horizontally for the sake of space (and a fear of losing the disc inside or it tipping over). This would greatly drive me away from the system.

but I like my 1st-gen-phat-model cuz it still as all the goodies inside :)

I just hope the power supply doesn't come like 360's beat-ur-mom-brick...

Would I buy a slimmer PS3? No. Would I buy a slimmer $300 PS3? Absolutely.

Hopefully by that time there's more games, though. I'm not a MGS fan and I could care less for Resistance.

I'm with Birdman on this one. The price is outrageous for those of us who are less than impressed with their lineup. I already have a 360 and given the amount of games they share, I can't justify the expense of the PS3. That, and the constant SKU switching make it a hard sell.

On the note of the size, the PS3 could definitely use a thinner, quieter version. However, I don't think this will make the 360 look unsightly. I really dig the look of it.

That conception picture looks like ASS. Why would anyone want a shroom-shaped PS3 with an overhang like that? What is that for? To park your SIXAXIS in the fucking PS3 garage or something?

But to proceed to my main point of this post. Sony releases new SKUs on a frequent enough basis that there's a strong incentive for alot of us to keep waiting. Most of us already game on some combination of a PC, Wii, or 360, so we can hold off for a bit. Perhaps in 2009 or 2010 they will offer a PS3 that has backwards compatibility and can make coffee or has like a fleshlight on it or something, and then people like me will feel stupid for buying whatever SKU comes out in late 2008.

I don't even need it to be slim, but a $300 BS3 would do it for me in a heartbeat. Slimness would just be a perk. I would easily pay $300 for the blue rays, and my wife would probably back me up on that one, as she mentioned being interested in getting a BR player just last week.
