Rumor: PS3 firmware 3.41 improves sh*tty patching system photo

The majority of the PlayStation 3 experience consists of watching a long progress bar slowly fill up as the system downloads and installs its endless supply of bloated updates and patches. According to some new information dug up in the latest firmware, however, it would appear that Sony is implementing something it should have done years ago -- a patching system that doesn't totally suck.

When updating the PS3's firmware, the console doesn't just retrieve the new information it requires. Instead, it redownloads the entire firmware, which is mostly comprised of old information. This leads to lengthy patching processes, with the PS3 taking significantly longer than the Xbox 360 to install even the most insignificant of updates.

However, nosy gamers have dug into the latest firmware update to find an "incremental download patch," which should allow the PS3 to download smaller updates with only brand-new data. The short story is that future updates might not be so damn irritating. Good job, Sony, you've done something worthwhile with your PS3 updates. You don't see that every day.

Imagine, we might be able to spend more time playing games instead of watching a progress bar. It's a brave new world for PS3 owners! Now it would be frigging nice if this capability could be extended to other software updates. No excuse for the PS3's bullshit when the 360 downloads patches in mere seconds.

Yes the updates take longer than they should and often occur at inopportune moment but to say the majority of our time is spent on patches is disingenuous.

Or obvious sarcasm.

God damn those DAILY, nay HOURLY updates which take about 12 hours to complete, GOD DAMN THEM TO HELL!
/sarcasm.

Still, the way the updates work could be better and it seems they will be better and that's a good thing in my book.

Apparently the most recent "does nothing but adds a recommended section in the store" update actually updated the flash support in that joyous console feature - the internet browser.

Thanks again Sony. x x

Jim's not too far off from the truth, sarcasm or no. Nothing is more irritating than dusting off a game you haven't played in a while, and having to sit through a half hour or more of patches. Especially when you're the kind of person with an actual life, who can only squeeze an hour or 2 AT MOST in a given day to play a game.

Why are people praising sony for finally fixing a feature the other consoles have been enjoying this whole generation?

Happy to know that I am not the only one who thought the patching system of the PS3 is terrible, especially when you're used to the one of the XBox 360. I bought a PS3 last week and I was floored at the fact that it took me 5-10 minutes to patch LittleBigPlanet (compared to a few seconds for most XBox 360 games).

I guess Microsoft have more experience to develop patch systems, considering Windows and it's zillion patches.

When I first got my PS3, I thought my Wi-Fi was busted because the progress bar was going slower than my laptop on a bad day.
Glad to know they've added this. Now if you could auto-download game software updates when you're not doing anything...(shit, that's the PS Plus thing, isn't it...)

A step in the right direction, now all we need is the istallation portion of the download to not be a seperate thing, its anoying leaving my PS3 to download a demo to find its only half done when i come back because it hasnt installed the thing

Is it true? Jim plays his PS3 all the time? Add me dood. We can play Killzone 2 together....well after all the updates have finished.

I actually remember after spending significant amount of time away from Uncharted 2 all the friggin updates and how long they took. Kind of ridiculous.

As a late PS3 adopter, my initial experience with literally every game I tried to play was sitting through what seemed like a never-ending series of updates. Definitely a different experience than the second or two it takes my 360 (and even then it's only one update per game).

So, yeah, this is great news!

Trolls? Wouldn't trolling a trolling article be disagreeing with it? In this case, saying something like,

"You all must have shit connections or something, because I'm not experiencing any of these long installs you all ramble on about,"

is trolling, n'est pas?

Anyway, Jim is right.

I may not own a PS3 but I have definitely spent most of my time on the ps3 waiting for it to update, and this long update problem has kept me from trying games because I don't like waiting so long for updates just to play.

The fact that numerous people have called out the slow loadind times for patching doesn't exactly mean were trolling. Not all patches are horrendous.

My point was, spend any significant time away from the game and let the patches mount up and you'll be waiting a while.

Also it could just be my shitty connection but Bioshock and Metal Gear Solid 4 took ridiculously
Long (close to an hour) to put on the PS3. In Bioshocks case due to the blank screen we thought the game had frozen up the system.

I can say, without any trolling intent or exaggeration, that the whole patching/installing/downloading/loading riggamarole on the PS3 makes me play the console less. Hell, I spend most of my time playing the Wii, where I simply don't have to worry about trophies synching and all that jazz.

There's something to be said for simplicity.

That said, that doesn't mean I wouldn't enjoy developers having the possibility to patch broken Wii games. It's something they apparently can't do at all.

Surely there's a happy medium to be found somewhere?

Why do dling patches and what not take you guys so long? The new firmware update only took a couple of minutes. I barely spend time installing stuff on my ps3 I'm not trying to troll or anything but I'm being honest. I know a lot of people hate ps3 on this site but long installs is really bullshit unless you waited years to play a game on it.

hahaha. Well played, Sterling.

This is good news for me. My internet connection at home is pitifully slow and new firmware updates always take forever.

Nothing like sitting down to play some games when I finally have some free time on the weekend and being told that I have to wait an hour or more for a firmware update to download and install.

god damn... do you people get pissed off at your assholes when your shit doesnt come out fast enough? grow up. i know your time is so precious, but get some patience, get up , grab a beer or something. its not a big deal.

if it wasnt for hard drives and broadband we wouldnt have these problems. i remember when games came out ,not to long ago, they were fully tested as much as possible then released with little to no issues. blame all these updates on developers for releasing untested games. not sony or MS. unless your ONLY complaining about firmware. if so, thats just stupid.

I've had a couple of horribly long downloads, but not many. Can't even remember for which games, but its been awhile. Firmware patches are no problem at all, since I don't need to install them just to play a game, so I just do them AFTER I'm done playing, and have the PS3 turn itself off. If I buy a new game, then I just go get a drink or check the internet or something when I install it. Sounds like a lot of people sit there and RAGE. Anyway, regardless of some people being able to control their temper regarding an inanimate object, or not, improvement is good.

As far as Jim Sterling writing a negative article concerning a positive development, this is expected. He's the British tabloid press of game BLOGGING. It's not even worth commenting on, since that's exactly what he wants. Just roll your eyes and move on.

fetusmilk: That attitude is what lets Sony offer sub-par features.

We shouldn't have to "make do" and "be patient" when we know for a fact that there are better alternatives. The PS3 is more powerful than the Xbox 360. It shouldn't take significantly longer to install a patch. It's pathetic in comparison. Even the Wii's quicker.

Oh and the "Your connection sucks" excuse is bullshit. If the connection sucks, why does it take a handful of seconds to download an Xbox 360 patch when it can take minutes on the PS3?

Don't give me that crap.

@ BMkeys - No seriously, try an Xbox 360. Updates literally take 5-10 seconds.

While they're at it, they should do something about patching games. Last week I got LBP and had an hour to play it before work, but I didn't get a chance to because it had to download 10 updates before allowing me to play.

Wow, thats more people getting bent out of shape over a joke than there should be. Fan boys can't take a joke, and Benjamin Franklin is proven right again, as "the sting in any rebuke is the truth."

Anyone who's honest with themselves knows the PS3 updates are slow as molasses compared to the 360 and its good to hear that it might be changing. Now if only they would run in the background as well and it would be perfect.

Glad to see this feature. Updates are among the worst parts of the user experience with a PS3. It's always bothered me that NXE on 360 took less time to update than any routine firmware update on PS3, and NXE was a complete OS overhaul.

I hate trophy syncing, and some games take longer than others, wish i could just turn the function off. I also wish more games had instantloading. I don't need to wait 2 minutes to watch logos, go to the menu and load my game. It's bearable, but when a game like bayonetta takes too much while giving too little back, it puts the entire process on notice,
