We've been around this block a few times, but the mystery surrounding this chapter of the PS3 cross-game chat story makes it all the more tantalizing. Yes, cross-game chat for the PlayStation 3 has once again been promised, this time by a Naughty Dog employee who hastily removed all evidence of his claim.
Although the Naughty Dog worker, going by the handle of ReklissAbandon, deleted his post on Sony's official forums, it was naturally reposted by other thread participants. This is the games industry, after all -- whatever is posted can never be unposted. Here's the full message [emphasis added]:
I think they wanted people to have fun and ejoy [sic] the show since all dead players can talk to each other no matter what team you are on. But I will suggest it anyway. Not to mention that the next PS3 firmware update is going to allow cross game chat. So if players use that instead of in game communication then they would also be able to communicate enemies [sic] positions.
The deletion of the post could mean that either ReklissAbandon was completely wrong, that he was completely right, or that he was completely ashamed of the English errors in his post. Either way, we've taken another shambling step closer toward the PS3 having something it should have had from the start. Hooray!

I'm really happy though that this could be coming.
Also, about time. If it's true.
PSN seems to be playing catch up, and they are doing a fairly good job if this is true. 360 still does have a few advantages though, like the matching system (even though it doesn`t always work right), and the party chat.
"It Only Does Everything" seems an odd tagline for a system that isn't backwards compatible.
Okay fine, I'll go pick up the headset now.
Oh and according to several random PSN spammers, Sony is planning on charging for the PlayStation Network starting in January. So chain that letter to everyone on your friends list to show Sony that we will not stand for it!! Ahahaha!!
i mean, this is the company that's last firmware updates 1) added sparkles to the screen, 2) spammed game adds all over the place, 3) made Uncharted unplayable, and then 4) made fix that a whole lot of other things unplayable (for some).
when do they have time to add basic functionality to their interface, when they are so busy investing in the gaming gold mine that is Home (sarcasm)?
tell me that they are selling digital diamond rings on Home for 100 dollars, and i'll believe you. tell me they are doing something like adding an alarm and ask you what you're smoking because i want to live in your world.
Yeah... no.
And I bet that the cross game chat is going to have multiple people at once...
Oh I hope we don't have to pay for this....:(
And if we're going the game feature route: how about invites and whatnot that don't involve Home?
And if we're taking the obvious route: how about backwards compatibility?
Besides, party chat isn't just cross game chat. It allows invites from the chat too, along with a few other minor advantages. I'm confident XBL will keep up, so far I have no issues paying for it. PSN is free but I also never use it.
wut?
For those not in the know, Cross Game Chat is a feature that allows gamers to chat, regardless of what game they are playing. On Live I can create a party with my friends and chat before, during and after any gaming.
Now if Sony were to pack in headsets as standard, they'd make some gain on 360 and Live. If PSN was a paid service, it would hopefully improve a great deal.
I'm leaning towards this.
@HEL05
Yea you can have live audio, video, and text chats in the XMB(aka front end w/e)
if true, it will not be what we consider cross game chat, it'll be a masked monkey throwing bananas. now that is a feature i do want. but it is sony, so they'll fuck that up like usual.
can't wait to hear a bleep every time someone says nazi or lesbian. i find it absolutely oxy-moronic that sony has censored nearly every word in the cross game text but won't censor peoples comments. bravo sony, bravo.
Cross based chat, yay.
...And now I read the article. But my point stands, that slogan is D'toid caption material.
I love how this immediately turned into a PSN vs. Live debate. Ugh. Good news for PS3 owners though! Assuming it's true, which it probably is.
I never understood this... if you're playing a separate game from a buddy, why do you want to hear if he just scored/killed/gathered something. If you want to talk to someone not playing your game, put down the controller and pick up the damn phone. And, while I'm ranting, fanboys should all be hurled into the sun.
/end rant
good night d'toid, sleep well
A valid question. However, often times I'll start playing one game, see one or many of my friends are online playing different games, and I'll want to talk to them to coordinate a game we can all play. This is way easier than calling each of them individually and relaying messages.
And more than that, sometimes I *do* want to talk to people who are playing entirely different games with no intention of actually playing with them. A couple weeks ago, I got online to play Halo 3 - by myself - and I ended up talking with a bunch of friends from home who happened to be online, each playing different games. I probably wouldn't have talked to them if I couldn't. In general, cross-game chat turns the service from merely a game-relevant communication device into a legitimate social device. I've gotten on XBOX Live with the sole intention of talking to friends to organize an IRL social event.
I don't really care how much better Xbox Live is when compared to PSN. I'm not going to pay to play games online.
That's just who I am. It's just like how, I don't care how great World of Warcraft is and how many of my friends play it, if I want to play an MMO I'll play a free one.
As for Cross Game Chat - meh. I doubt we'll see it, and even if we do, I won't use it. The only reason I can stand more than half of my friend's list is that I don't have to hear them speak.
I talk to one of my PSN friends on a daily basis, because he's a friend in real-life, too. For me, cross-game chat would be like the chat room, but while playing games -- Not using minutes on my cell phone.
For example, here's the ENTIRE PlayStation Store description for Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain (a game I've never played and know very little about):
"Kain is out for vengeance, and nothing but blood will shake his thirst! Download this PSone Classic today!"
It's just that and a microscopic picture of the game box. Are you kidding me?
@ Holiday
Because that's $40 people could use to buy another game. And maybe people don't like having to keep two different Sony consoles plugged into their entertainment centers when they clearly have the technology to do it all in one system, but choose not to. Hell, even MS lets us play almost all of their back catalog, and they're some of the most greedy bastards around.
Who really talks on the PSN? Whenever I play online everyone is silent.
On the topic at hand: This needs to happen, sooner rather than later. Being the anti-social person that I am, I'm probably going to hate it though. Every d-bag on my friend's list calling me every five minutes... urgh.
Like a web browser? Or Bluetooth support, or WiFi support, or Free Online, or Charging Controllers, or modern movie media, or standard swappable HDD, or something?
Come on Jim, you love to do the whole "it doesn't actually do everything" shit, but we all know it does a fucktonne more than any similar device.
Tell me, how much has the PSN cost you to use?
Way to turn something that isn't at all about the 360... into something about the 360.
Yes, the 360 could/should have all the things you listed. But do you know why Jim doesn't mention them? Well, it might be because MicroGAY pays him lots of money to subtly advertise for them! Or, we can be adults, and realize that he doesn't mention them BECAUSE IT'S NOT RELEVANT at the moment.
Cross-game chat is a basic feature that PSN should have. This is all he's saying. For a console that claims to do everything, leaving out a relatively basic and relatively important feature is kinda silly.
When I play a game I play a game and talk to people who are in a game with me. When I want to chat I use the 6 person video-chat function. Don't tell me I should like cross-game chat because I don't. Could be helpful in games like Demon's Souls I'll give you that.
