Rumor: Prototype, Guitar Hero developers hit with layoffs photo

It's possible that two Activision-tied studios, Radical Entertainment and Neversoft, have been serving pink slips to their employees.

According to Kotaku sources, Radical, developer of last year's open-world action game Prototype, might have let around 90 members of their staff go. A lone source suggested to Kotaku that the alleged layoffs might have had something to do with the Disney and Marvel deal, which killed one of its current projects.

The number on possible Guitar Hero developer Neversoft's layoffs is shaky at best, but we did grab comment from Activision regarding both of these studios. As you can imagine, the statement is as hard and cold as a super frozen scoop of ice cream (or my mother's heart sans the rusty nails and barbwire.)

Activision Publishing continually evaluates its resources to ensure that they are properly matched against its product slate and strategic goals.   In 2010, the company’s sku count will be smaller than in 2009 driven in part, by a decrease in the number of music-based games we will be releasing.

As we discussed on our earnings conference call yesterday, we are directing our resources against the largest and most profitable business segments, and as part of this initiative, we are realigning our resources to better reflect our slate and the market opportunities.  At the same time, we are increasing our digital/online capabilities as we expect that digital/online will continue to become a more meaningful part of our business model in the years ahead.

I hate to see people get laid off as a person but I also having a feeling of happiness? Maybe its just because I'm a horrible person but I fking wanted prototype more then (almost) any game I've seen in years and when I got it I think I died inside a bit. I want to say YA FUCK YOU GUYS FOR MAKING A SHITTY GAME AND HAVING ME FEEL THE MOST DISSAPOINTED I HAVE IN A LONG FKING TIME! Then my human side is going oh sad face these people have family's..

I'm so torn.

Keep in mind, Radical was a Sierra property for years before Activision came along. They barely missed getting the axe, and so did Prototype, when Kotick & Co. got put in charge.

Blizzard and Infinity Ward are making all the money right now. The rest are writeoffs waiting for the blade to drop.

Always bad to hear about layoffs but did anyone not see this coming, at least in the Guitar Hero case? You can't release that many games in the same genre without having all of the teams involved competing with each other. Obviously at least one (probably more) were bound to get kicked to the curb.

My question is, was prototype shitty because of the development team, or because activision pushed it out without enough time and made them inject too much of that crappy spiderman style gameplay in? Oh well enough lamenting on how that game came out in the end. I feel bad for the families of those laid off, but am thankful at the same time. Its nice there wont be so many damn guitar heroes taking up shelf space this next fiscal year.

Wait wait wait, does it mean it could be the end of Guitar Hero?

Oh. Oh my God.

I want to party.

Wait I'm confused, I think people are mistaking Prototype with a bad game.

Didn't you hear? Kotick took all the money from MW2 sales and filled his 8 pools with it.

Guitar Hero might be handed off to Vicarious Visions, last I heard. They've been doing the Wii ports for a while, as well as the handheld games.

I suppose this is better than letting the bubble burst in the future and shutting down whole studios. Still, a lot of talented people lost their jobs.

"Oh sorry all you people that we chained down to work on one game only. We aren't going to make that game anymore so instead of redistributing you talented people to new projects or other studios within the company, we are just going to fire you all. By the way, we made more money then any other publisher last year, so obviously we could afford you. Have a nice day."

I love activision.

Ok, I think some of you are overreacting over Protoype. I still need to get it myself, but I'm still looking forward to playing it. It can't as bad as you're making it.

I do, however, wish that Activision hadn't taken the property away from Sierra. I liked their logo on the box better. What happened to Sierra? Did Activision kick them all to the curb also, or are they still publishing?

Prototype could've seriously been the best game ever. It's a mediocre sandbox game with crappy controls and unoriginal missions and some of the worst, most laughable writing ever in a game.

it's still playable, but one playthrough was more than enough for me. what really irked me is that the powers become a novelty after a little because the missions are so unimaginative.

Sad, but the less mediocre devs we have in the world the better!

Neversoft have done the bare minimum to expand on Harmonix's idea.

And Radical have, looking at their Wikipedia entry, done very little over the last 18 years to really push gaming at all!

Ah, Activision. Maybe you'll realize what a shithole you're making the industry and throw Kotick out on his ass so I can buy Starcraft II without feeling like I'm feeding the monster.

25 Guitar Hero games in 2009, and here's what you get!

Activision, stop punching yourself in the cock. It was funny at first, but now it kind of hurts to watch.

Especially since Prototype was the best sperm you ever produced.

Especially sad the Prototype folks are seeing pink slips. The game was awesome and the dialog was lol. Still was a great game. I hope some studios see that on their resumes and give them a nicer, more respectful home.
