An unnamed source tells Kotaku that Nintendo's upcoming console, codenamed Project Cafe, will not have a hard drive. Instead, it will feature 8 gigabytes of on-board flash-based memory, and that will likely be used for game storage. That's not a lot of storage, but it's far more than the Wii offers. Beyond this, the system is also said to support saving to SD memory cards. Of course, Nintendo is not commenting on this.
It seems that the new disc format for Project Cafe will hold 25GB of data. That's huge! There's no copying of your games to local storage with discs of this size.
Mix these rumors up with previous ones that mention HD graphics, crazy controllers with screens on them and laser beams and whatnot, and you've got a crazy game system that's hard to imagine. I can't wait for E3.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
If the next Playstation or Xbox launched with such miniscule storage everyone would be laughing at their backward ways and complete lack of understanding of the current market and future trends.
This is completely idiotic and if proven true, could completely destroy what little faith I have in Nintendo to correct its course and deliver a system that is remotely capable of competing with the 360 and PS3 on a technological level. Just because it may sport HD graphics doesn't mean it's ready to play with the big boys if its base storage can't even offer the ability to store a single downloaded title or more than 4-5 DLC packages. Then again, Nintendo consoles always blow when it comes to delivering DLC, so no big surprise there. But if they offer 1-2 at least it will be better than last time. GENIUS!
I don't see why they can't use a regular HDD to save on costs.
I'm seriously getting sick and tired of their tabloidesque sensationalist bullshit now.
But people already take rumors seriously.
SPECULATION!
I'm just trying to wrap my head around this. Why so little? Why all this about it being super powerful and how it will win back the traditional audience and resurrect the dead and then only give it 8GB in flash memory? Why not an HDD or 16GBs at least?
It probably won't for fear of piracy but external HDD support would be fabulous.
WOw a whole 8gbs!? Isn't flash memory cheap as chips? I mean I bought a 16gb card for 7 quid the other day.
C'mon Nintendo, Do not dissapoint me.
Seriously? that's pathetic

2 TB isn't enough for you wankers? Think about SD tech in 2012, not 2010.
Nintendo has to go Blu-ray and allow their system to serve as a mode for movie playback.
Really? So than why is the new XboX 360 slim, only rocking 4GB of on-board memory? If its that cheap, than how come Microsoft charges us, out the ass, for its proprietary HDD on the 360? I get that it would be better for Nintendo to use a HDD, but I'm just saying. Its not as cheap, or as easy as you're making it out to be here. If it was, than why don't we have 1TB 360/PS3's right now? Do you honestly expect Nintendo to triple the amount of storage on their new console, over what the 360/PS3 has right now? If so, than keep dreaming!
I hope this isn't true because, if it is, it's incredibly stupid.
8-16 GB cards don't cost must now, so if they go with SD support, users will be able to choose how much storage they need and have even better SD storage options in the not-too-distant future.
Its the HDDs that are outdated, not flash memory.
You're right. Now that I think about it, I don't see cloud storage as a viable solution for games, unless you have a super fast internet connection... then it would also require said connection to even play those games and access your saves, etc.
Are the new discs made out of golf balls and written with hyper-threading, waffle irons? I heard that they were. I also heard that the discs were a disc cartridge hybrid that smelled a lot like yeast and talcum powder.
Sounds like Nintendo (if rumors being true) are going blu ray.
SDXC storage sounds like the way to go, honestly. It allows the buyer to upgrade his system upwards to 2TB and decide for himself his storage options...and eliminates return risk on HDD failure.
If this is true, I...>.>
Go copy and paste that link and see what the fuck I am talking about you moron. You're being ripped off by Microsoft. They use laptop hard drives which cost more, but still not as much as they charge.
You're obviously not really well informed about the prices of computer components in the present day.
Seriously, every time Nintendo releases a new home platform I think they've FINALLY gotten it right, and every.single.time. they prove me wrong. PS, When can I buy Zelda again?
