Rumor: Project Cafe has 8GB of on-board flash memory photo

An unnamed source tells Kotaku that Nintendo's upcoming console, codenamed Project Cafe, will not have a hard drive. Instead, it will feature 8 gigabytes of on-board flash-based memory, and that will likely be used for game storage. That's not a lot of storage, but it's far more than the Wii offers. Beyond this, the system is also said to support saving to SD memory cards. Of course, Nintendo is not commenting on this.

It seems that the new disc format for Project Cafe will hold 25GB of data. That's huge! There's no copying of your games to local storage with discs of this size.

Mix these rumors up with previous ones that mention HD graphics, crazy controllers with screens on them and laser beams and whatnot, and you've got a crazy game system that's hard to imagine. I can't wait for E3.

I actually like this. I have plenty of 16 gig cards I'm not using. Plus, the cost will be far less if this new Wii HD doesn't have a harddrive.

It´s remember the Sonic cycle. The initial news are good. But then begins to show the bad part of Nintendo.

If it is true, I hope Nintendo allow users to install a hard drive on the machine, since 8GB is very little, considering many games have DLC with more than 500mb in size.

Why is it that whenever Nintendo does something that is so completely asinine (aka having less than half of the on-board storage that the 360 had 5-6 years ago at launch) it is deemed "okay" or "good" just because it is "better than last time?

If the next Playstation or Xbox launched with such miniscule storage everyone would be laughing at their backward ways and complete lack of understanding of the current market and future trends.

This is completely idiotic and if proven true, could completely destroy what little faith I have in Nintendo to correct its course and deliver a system that is remotely capable of competing with the 360 and PS3 on a technological level. Just because it may sport HD graphics doesn't mean it's ready to play with the big boys if its base storage can't even offer the ability to store a single downloaded title or more than 4-5 DLC packages. Then again, Nintendo consoles always blow when it comes to delivering DLC, so no big surprise there. But if they offer 1-2 at least it will be better than last time. GENIUS!

Well 8GB of on-aboard memory isn't horrible. I mean if its expandable with SD cards, than you can easily get 64GB SD for cheap now, so it can have a lot of storage, but the real question is, can DLC work properly straight from a SD card? Like map-packs and other add-on stuff like that? I guess they can, because that's how it works on 3DS, right? I don't know, its all just a rumor for now anyway, but its not really all that bad, if its true, so whatever. The 25GB game size is really intriguing though, so does that confirm that it uses a single layered Blu Ray disc?

@VenusInFurs: Also, if they are doing it to keep costs down, then why keep the 6' inch controller? If that piece of rumor is true, the controller itself will be as expensive as a HDD with considerable space.

An actual HDD with moving parts would be cheap as shit. 100GB costs practically nothing, and 1TB drives can be found for under 100 dollars these days.

I don't see why they can't use a regular HDD to save on costs.

To me, this makes no sense unless Nintendo goes CLOUD on us! Some kind of hybrid disk-cloud system, where DLC would be hosted remotly but games sold in stores.

SPECULATION!

So I'm assuming it is either not goin' to attempt to be a multimedia device or it will be a terrible one? I'm also assuming the online marketplace will be balls because I have more than 8 GBs in DLC alone.

I'm just trying to wrap my head around this. Why so little? Why all this about it being super powerful and how it will win back the traditional audience and resurrect the dead and then only give it 8GB in flash memory? Why not an HDD or 16GBs at least?

It probably won't for fear of piracy but external HDD support would be fabulous.

8GB onboard flash memory only makes sense if it also has a HDD option ala the Xbox360. They should definitely go the Sony and MS route by offering a starter 8GB unit and a separate higher capacity version with respective price points. That way, you are guaranteed a user base with the ability to download and store at least ~8GB. Then again, maybe this is all BS and they have a better solution... cloud storage?

"the next-generation SDXC memory card specification dramatically improves consumers’ digital lifestyles by increasing storage capacity from more than 32 GB up to 2 TB. Its exFAT file system handles large volumes of data. The specification for increasing bus interface, "UHS-I," with speeds up to 104 MB per second and a road map to 300 MB per second, and UHS Speed Class are available for SDXC cards and host devices."
http://www.sdcard.org/developers/tech/sdxc

2 TB isn't enough for you wankers? Think about SD tech in 2012, not 2010.

Nintendo has to go Blu-ray and allow their system to serve as a mode for movie playback.

Really? So than why is the new XboX 360 slim, only rocking 4GB of on-board memory? If its that cheap, than how come Microsoft charges us, out the ass, for its proprietary HDD on the 360? I get that it would be better for Nintendo to use a HDD, but I'm just saying. Its not as cheap, or as easy as you're making it out to be here. If it was, than why don't we have 1TB 360/PS3's right now? Do you honestly expect Nintendo to triple the amount of storage on their new console, over what the 360/PS3 has right now? If so, than keep dreaming!

I hope this isn't true because, if it is, it's incredibly stupid.

Yeah I'm sort of amazed at how SD cards are getting downplayed here. That stuff grows by leaps and bound while Sony's ProDuo format keeps getting revised just to flounder again.

8-16 GB cards don't cost must now, so if they go with SD support, users will be able to choose how much storage they need and have even better SD storage options in the not-too-distant future.

Its the HDDs that are outdated, not flash memory.

This sounds fake. I'm going to ahead and guess they are going to put Gamecube games on the virtual console next generation, which can take up 3GB in size. So I expect the hard drive to be a 40GB minimum, or, this is true and the onboard flash is separate from the hard drive. They could use a USB hardrive next generation, it works well enough for homebrewers right now.

facepalm at people whining about storage space. it's Nintendo so we won't have media center(like ps3/360) but game console so you don't need 100+GB HDD. more over it's either SSD drive or flash-based memory simillar to DS/3DS cartridges(and all Nintendo systems except GC and Wii). unlike HDDs, flash-based memory cards don't have things like loadings and all that crap so all downloadable games, demos, DLCs much smaller compared to ps3/360 versions of the same stuff. just look at n64 and psx games.

You're right. Now that I think about it, I don't see cloud storage as a viable solution for games, unless you have a super fast internet connection... then it would also require said connection to even play those games and access your saves, etc.

I guess with that type of storage, downloadable media on a Nintendo platform is still kind of a joke. Is the hardware cost that makes Nintendo seem to be so much against this, or is it that they know that their system will be cracked rather quickly and that they're trying avoid giving pirates wiggle room with stolen media?

Are the new discs made out of golf balls and written with hyper-threading, waffle irons? I heard that they were. I also heard that the discs were a disc cartridge hybrid that smelled a lot like yeast and talcum powder.

blu ray single layer discs are 25GB, dual layer 50GB, and multiple layers can even extend that to 200GB per disc.

Sounds like Nintendo (if rumors being true) are going blu ray.

SDXC storage sounds like the way to go, honestly. It allows the buyer to upgrade his system upwards to 2TB and decide for himself his storage options...and eliminates return risk on HDD failure.

Go copy and paste that link and see what the fuck I am talking about you moron. You're being ripped off by Microsoft. They use laptop hard drives which cost more, but still not as much as they charge.

You're obviously not really well informed about the prices of computer components in the present day.

"Hi there, we're Nintendo. We know you've been screaming for us to get our shit together and crank out something respectable graphics-wise for this generation and we're going to do just that. However.. We are not including a hard drive because we'd like 3rd party developers to stay the fuck away from our hardware, and because we're insane, and because we know regardless of what we do, you're going to buy Mario and Zelda again and again and again."

Seriously, every time Nintendo releases a new home platform I think they've FINALLY gotten it right, and every.single.time. they prove me wrong. PS, When can I buy Zelda again?
