Just when we thought names for game systems couldn't get any worse, Nintendo hit us with the name "Wii U" last year. It somehow managed to be even worse than "Wii," and many quickly pointed to how the name could potentially confuse consumers. Shoppers could see the familiar white box with blue text and logos, and white console, and pass on what they think they already have at home.
CVG says that sources "close to the platform holder" have suggested that Nintendo is considering changing the name of their next console before E3 comes around. They say that discussions are going on at the highest level right now, and that they could be moving to avoid some of the public confusion they saw with the 3DS. They say that a name change is a real possibility, and that Nintendo is keen not to repeat the same naming mistakes with this next console.
Let's go back to Revolution or something, Nintendo. You guys are the worst at naming your products!
What would you name the Wii U?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Wii-2. Lulz.
Of course the 'U' at the end is the major issue and I can't say I'm a huge fan of it. Though something like Super Wii or Wii2 doesn't sound much better.
I think it should be called the Wii Revolution as a reference to what the Wii was going to be called in the first place. Wii U breaks the "pathetic name" meter.
You'll meet me in da club
etc etc
Seriously though, how about a name not related to video games? Gamecube, Xbox, and Playstation all reference video games/game boxes, so it'd be nice to have a name unrelated to video games.
Nintendo Eclipse? Nintendo Parabola? Nintendo Wave? Nintendo Revolution? Nintendo Beam? Nintendo On? Nintendo Power? :)
Just have it less dumb please.
I sure hope they change the name, as i totally agree with the possible marketing confusion, plus, the name really sucks as it stands.
Let's face it, it would be hilarious.
I'd buy a Wii Ultimate, and you guys know you would too.
If Nintendo doesn't like the Wii-2, then maybe something like
- Nintendo Middle of the Road Console Release
- Nintendo Slightly Less Powerful Than The 6 Year Old Xbox 360
- Nintendo Big Hulking Controller With a Screen and Slide Pads Instead of Actual Joy Sticks
- Nintendo Zelda Demo That Will Never Actually Be Made Into A Zelda Game And Was Only Designed To Pull On Your Nostalgia Strings And Hopefully Garner Positive Press
Or, My favorite
- The Nintendo Oh Shit What The Hell Do We Do Now?
... many of us older folks remember the Wang Word Processors... so a Wang as the next gen from the Wii might be viable! :)
Or they could Just pull a Sony/Mario Kart and call it The Nintendo 6...
If you're going to bash the WiiU do it properly.
By that logic so is the PS3 seeing as PS2 was still getting games pretty damn often up until last year.
We don't have details on the exact power-levels of the WiiU, we'll need to wait until we actually see some non-tech-demos play on the system.
None of the consoles have Joysticks, they have Analog Sticks, Joysticks have actual large Sticks that point up.
Every Nintendo system has had the Zelda tech-demo, yet they've always pulled true.
My suggestion: "Nintendo Omni." That's a pretty douchy and hipster name. That's what we're going for, right?
Or "Project Cafe". Whatevs.
As for throwing my idea into the hat: The Nintendo Evolution
Why? Because Nintendo needs to absolutely EXUDE the fact that they're trying to move forward with not only their new console, but they're entire company. The very name of the new console should completely embody that movement.
Nintendo 1080.
But seriously, they have an opportunity to finally bring a good console name back into the running. There hasn't been one since the Dreamcast. Playstation is Engrish, and Xbox sounds like 90's eXtreme marketing excrement. It doesn't even have to be entirely sensible, merely linguistically and aesthetically pleasing, like Altair, or Hydra...Spectre...or Souvenir, you know, because you play games, then take away memories? Ah forget it.
But some marketing people who are paid to make names should be able to easily top WiiU; it's a bad name (and they should feel bad), and it does nothing but confuse people who can't easily discern between two consoles the way us learned types can.
