Rumor: Ninja Theory making Devil May Cry 5 photo

In what will surely be the most unexpected rumor of the day, Game Informer is claiming that Heavenly Sword and Enslaved developer Ninja Theory is responsible for the fifth entry in Capcom's action series, Devil May Cry. Western devs creating Devil May Cry 5? It's more likely than you think.

Capcom has implied in the past that it will farm out its older IP to the West and concentrate on internally developing new content. Given the considerable Western appeal of Devil May Cry, and the fact that DMC4 wasn't the best in the series, it isn't a huge stretch to imagine that Ninja Theory is on this one. The Cambridge-based studio is working on a "secret project", after all.

Still, it's a strange concept, so let's until an actual confirmation arrives, we'll just have to file this away as gossip. We really are due another Devil May Cry though, so I hope that at least the existence of a DMC5 is real.

I wouldn't doubt this for a second, but after playing with Nero, they will really have to make Dante fun to play again.

I don't think it's that strange a fit. As much as Heavenly Sword was like God Of War, it was also equally as similar as Devil May Cry.
If it's true...I can see it being a good thing. At least in my head.

What the hell are you on about 'wasn't the best?'
Did you even play Devil May Cry 3?! That game was shit beyond belief. At least DMC4 had a decent storyline compared, which would leave only two other games left: 1 and 2. by default 1 can't be counted (even though I felt that 4 was just as deep as 1) and 2 wasn't a prize peach either. I'm really not looking forward to seeing a western developer have a go at it. It will most likely feature no swords and be a first person shooter.

I want to be excited about news on DMC 5... But an external team leaves me feeling uneasy. The mental scars from DMC 2 are still fresh.

@SuperMonk4Ever

Really? I enjoyed playing as Nero but I still enjoyed playing as Dante more. Dante at least gets to weapon / style swap mid combat.

even though the original will always be the most important, i thought DMC4 was probably the best in the series.

i don't think there's any way i can really see this as good news. since solid foundations have been laid by capcom, i suppose the chances of a total foul up aren't amazing, and perhaps in the wake of bayonetta the series could use some new ideas, but considering the level of quality it's has delivered so far i find it hard to imagine that the guys that made HS are going to suddenly be capable of beating capcom at their own game.

That doesn't seem so strange.

Konami allowed a western developer to work on Silent Hill: Homecoming and Sega created its own racing studio in England to work on the Sega Rally update before they sold it on to Codemasters.

I only played DMC1 and it was effing amazing at the time. I couldn't believe my eyes. After that, I totally lost interest even though everyone raves about 3. I am tentatively excited for NT to do 5. Maybe that will be what it takes to get me back into it.

DMC2 never existed, and everybody involved in the development of DMC2 were killed and had their corpses dumped in the ocean.

That being said, I'm really surprised how they have english voice acting in all the Japanese version of the series. Bizzare.

DMC3 is quite easily the best in the series. This topic has inspired me to get off my lazy ass and finally do that "Top ten reasons why DMC3 is so much better than DMC4" blog, thanks.

As for Ninja Theory, its not like Capcom was doing such a stellar job with the series with DMC4. I say, let them at it.

As long as they get rid of the god awful dialogue I am happy about this change. Love DMC and and happy for another installment even if it means going away from Capcom and lets face it given the sub par storytelling skills of Capcom since they stopped making Breath of Fire games I am optimistic. That and I may not have to play another stage like the dreaded dice mission at the end, god that level sucked and playing on the harder modes like DMD made me want to bash my head against a wall.

Devil May Cry 3 is hands down the best game in the series, not to mention it's one of the best games on the Playstation 2.

Anyawys, I'm mixed on this news. I want the DMC3/4 team to keep working on the gameplay because they make it super fun... but I'd like someone to inject some stronger continuity into the series and not make it "The adventures of Dante and friends" like 4 was

I guess Capcom are kicking themselves, after seeing how much acclaim Bayonetta got for Platinum. It just goes to show, that the young bucks can produce something outstanding if given enough of a chance. On top of that Dark Siders also did well for a another small studio, and with luck, Castlevania might strike the hot iron for Konami too. All this action leave DMC out in the wind.

DMC5 is going to take a lot of work to get right to appeal. While we can accept Bayonetta for not taking herself and her game seriously, its hard to do the opposite for DMC. Can't say I care about Dante being all cool and kicking arse, and besides the story, has always been pretty well taped together with duct tape weak. If Ninja Theory can play along the same not serious route of Bayonetta, they might stand a chance. Throw in some cameos of other Capcom characters and it might work out. And finish it with a big Dantezilla like demon fight.

Devil May Cry 4 was very meh. I'd be happy to see another studio take on the series, but Bayonetta is going to be extremely hard to top. That game took the best parts of DMC, and turned them up to 11.

I'd like to see them go the DMC3 route, and make the game an actual challenge, again.

DMC3:SE is absolutely a contender for the best in the series, but I really don't think DMC4 should be dismissed so easily. Dante's ability to switch between styles on-the-fly leads to some of the most insane things done on a controller.

Having the developers behind Female God of War (aka Heavenly Sword) working on this is not appealing to me, but I have to believe that the company is capable of making more than just one specific style of action game - at least, I really hope so.

DMC is still one of the most technical, concise, and varied action games to date. The action and combat mechanics are arguably the best ever created. I've been waiting (too long) to hear news about the next game, but I had a feeling that information would hinge on Bayonetta's release.

Hideki Kamiya said he no longer wants anything to do with the DMC series since it was continued by another developer, so that's out. Now that Bayonetta is (or at least should be considered by everyone) the benchmark of technical action games, I hope the level of depth to the weapon systems and over-the-top level design can shine through the rest of the genre.

DMC5 needs to stay true to the vein of combat DMC3 and 4 almost perfected, but just like what happened after the first DMC, the industry needs to again learn from Kamiya's masterpiece, now being Bayonetta.

Man, I didn't realize people didn't like DMC4 this much. I thought Nero was a pretty fun character to play as. But when Dante is finally playable he is INSANE, the amount of crazy combos you can pull off with him is just wow. Anyone who says DMC3 Dante is better than DMC4 Dante in terms of combat is ON CRACK.

Examples: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkPvyt_BF80 and

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30yVZWvq7Rs

These are great examples of the combat possibilities in DMC4. Still after Bayonetta has been released I've been on that more, so I agree that DMC needs a sequel but I'm hoping that this is just a rumor, because I NEVER WANT TO RELIVE DEVIL MAY CRY 2 EVER AGAIN. That piece of shit to this day is still being used a coaster in my room. So yeah, stick with the same team please...

I dunno...NT still has to prove itself in my eyes. Heavenly Sword was a glorified tech demo and little else. DMC4 on the other hand, while not the best in the series, wasnt the worst and was not by any accounts a bad game.

This could be a good thing. All I ask is no Nero. His inclusion in DMC4 was a mistake from the beginning. The series only needs one protagonist, one Dante, and Nero never came close to upstaging Dante. Less flashy attitude, less style, and less fun thanks to a crippled move set and lack of weapons (no, the Devil Bringer does not make up for Dante's 4 styles and multiple guns and Devil Arms). Leave the series to Dante and maybe give Nero his own spin-off (maybe that PSP DMC you promised us, Capcom?)

Whatever team did DMC3, have them do it. On a technical level the game was perfect and had enough replayability and difficulty for you to experiment with.

DMC, NOW WITH QTE'S!

Pretty unhappy about this.

DMC3 is still my favorite action game ever (yes I played GoW3), would rather they just get it together and put together a real full game (unlike 4 which was just one short game replayed by another character half way through, who's moves the game wasn't mean for)

Ok I went over every comment here and I just have one thing to ask WHY WOULD YOU GIVE THAT GAME A NAME!? What ever the so-called (because I don't think it's real) second installment of this game was suppose to be, other than a scaring moment in my life and the lowest point in DMC history, I don't know how DMC fans can even say that game is out there... because its not.

Ok now that I am done with my rant I really wish Capcom would keep the game and have Team Little Devil work on it again. Yet most of TLD went to Bayonetta renamed TLA and they made that game... replayable story just went out the window at one point. Yes I would agree DMC3 was an amazing game that I still play yet DMC4 was freaking awesome once you got Dante back. I mean being able to switch on the fly, unless your a gamer that needs people to hold your hand the whole way, would allow for just utterly AMAZING COMBOS! and being able to switch to all his weapons at one time EVEN BETTER!!!

Yet I am not fully against NT doing this game. Sure HS was an ok game and I own it but I have never played it more than twice, yet I still play DMC3 and DMC4 all the time, I don't think they could screw up DMC5 to bad.. I hope... I guess we will have to wait and see. I just pray to god that they don't ruin my favorite game.

devil may cry is the most unstable game in the gaming world no storyline connecting the 4 game previous really, how does nero get that arm, what and where did vergil go, why is dmc2's dante so different than the other 3... i think they should pick up where dmc3 started linking vergil with nero, making dante the main playable character, better weapons, more hardcore stylish gameplay, and more, lots more enemies, devil may cry 4 was the best of the 4 with story and gameplay, bloody place make 5 the best of the series 4 was a big step forward

Well I think they were all great it has become a tradition to play Dmc between me and my cousins. As for Dmc 3 and 4 I thought 4 was better because of Nero. I love how that demonic arm dealed tons of damage on my opponents. The only 2 things I didn't like about 4 was that Nero didn't recieve new weapons and that the producer got lazy in the fact that Nero looked almost more like Dante than Vergil with his hair down And the fact that they didn't have the two connected was wired to me and since different producers are coming in that shows that they didn't have plans to make them related in any way in the next game. I think in every games final sequel in a series the makers of the game should make a finale in witch all the the characters in the series come back for a final clash to end it all with new characters and a twist of course. That's just my opinion of course.
