In what will surely be the most unexpected rumor of the day, Game Informer is claiming that Heavenly Sword and Enslaved developer Ninja Theory is responsible for the fifth entry in Capcom's action series, Devil May Cry. Western devs creating Devil May Cry 5? It's more likely than you think.
Capcom has implied in the past that it will farm out its older IP to the West and concentrate on internally developing new content. Given the considerable Western appeal of Devil May Cry, and the fact that DMC4 wasn't the best in the series, it isn't a huge stretch to imagine that Ninja Theory is on this one. The Cambridge-based studio is working on a "secret project", after all.
Still, it's a strange concept, so let's until an actual confirmation arrives, we'll just have to file this away as gossip. We really are due another Devil May Cry though, so I hope that at least the existence of a DMC5 is real.

If it's true...I can see it being a good thing. At least in my head.
Did you even play Devil May Cry 3?! That game was shit beyond belief. At least DMC4 had a decent storyline compared, which would leave only two other games left: 1 and 2. by default 1 can't be counted (even though I felt that 4 was just as deep as 1) and 2 wasn't a prize peach either. I'm really not looking forward to seeing a western developer have a go at it. It will most likely feature no swords and be a first person shooter.
@SuperMonk4Ever
Really? I enjoyed playing as Nero but I still enjoyed playing as Dante more. Dante at least gets to weapon / style swap mid combat.
i don't think there's any way i can really see this as good news. since solid foundations have been laid by capcom, i suppose the chances of a total foul up aren't amazing, and perhaps in the wake of bayonetta the series could use some new ideas, but considering the level of quality it's has delivered so far i find it hard to imagine that the guys that made HS are going to suddenly be capable of beating capcom at their own game.
Konami allowed a western developer to work on Silent Hill: Homecoming and Sega created its own racing studio in England to work on the Sega Rally update before they sold it on to Codemasters.
also LOL @ DMC3 being shit.
I mean really?
You must be confused right?
DMC3 is fucking brilliant.
Maybe I should give this game another run through and see if I find it any better now I'm a little older.
That being said, I'm really surprised how they have english voice acting in all the Japanese version of the series. Bizzare.
As for Ninja Theory, its not like Capcom was doing such a stellar job with the series with DMC4. I say, let them at it.
Devil May Cry 3 is hands down the best game in the series, not to mention it's one of the best games on the Playstation 2.
Anyawys, I'm mixed on this news. I want the DMC3/4 team to keep working on the gameplay because they make it super fun... but I'd like someone to inject some stronger continuity into the series and not make it "The adventures of Dante and friends" like 4 was
DMC5 is going to take a lot of work to get right to appeal. While we can accept Bayonetta for not taking herself and her game seriously, its hard to do the opposite for DMC. Can't say I care about Dante being all cool and kicking arse, and besides the story, has always been pretty well taped together with duct tape weak. If Ninja Theory can play along the same not serious route of Bayonetta, they might stand a chance. Throw in some cameos of other Capcom characters and it might work out. And finish it with a big Dantezilla like demon fight.
I'd like to see them go the DMC3 route, and make the game an actual challenge, again.
Having the developers behind Female God of War (aka Heavenly Sword) working on this is not appealing to me, but I have to believe that the company is capable of making more than just one specific style of action game - at least, I really hope so.
DMC is still one of the most technical, concise, and varied action games to date. The action and combat mechanics are arguably the best ever created. I've been waiting (too long) to hear news about the next game, but I had a feeling that information would hinge on Bayonetta's release.
Hideki Kamiya said he no longer wants anything to do with the DMC series since it was continued by another developer, so that's out. Now that Bayonetta is (or at least should be considered by everyone) the benchmark of technical action games, I hope the level of depth to the weapon systems and over-the-top level design can shine through the rest of the genre.
DMC5 needs to stay true to the vein of combat DMC3 and 4 almost perfected, but just like what happened after the first DMC, the industry needs to again learn from Kamiya's masterpiece, now being Bayonetta.
No, it wasn't due to excitement.

These are great examples of the combat possibilities in DMC4. Still after Bayonetta has been released I've been on that more, so I agree that DMC needs a sequel but I'm hoping that this is just a rumor, because I NEVER WANT TO RELIVE DEVIL MAY CRY 2 EVER AGAIN. That piece of shit to this day is still being used a coaster in my room. So yeah, stick with the same team please...
And also if we're talking favorites, DMC3 is unbeatable. Love it.
@ Iron Dragon:
You make a good point. I really hope this isn't a bad thing. I enjoyed DMC4. I like the thrill it gives. I hope that thrill still exists in the fifth entry.
Whatever team did DMC3, have them do it. On a technical level the game was perfect and had enough replayability and difficulty for you to experiment with.
DMC, NOW WITH QTE'S!
DMC3 is still my favorite action game ever (yes I played GoW3), would rather they just get it together and put together a real full game (unlike 4 which was just one short game replayed by another character half way through, who's moves the game wasn't mean for)
Ok now that I am done with my rant I really wish Capcom would keep the game and have Team Little Devil work on it again. Yet most of TLD went to Bayonetta renamed TLA and they made that game... replayable story just went out the window at one point. Yes I would agree DMC3 was an amazing game that I still play yet DMC4 was freaking awesome once you got Dante back. I mean being able to switch on the fly, unless your a gamer that needs people to hold your hand the whole way, would allow for just utterly AMAZING COMBOS! and being able to switch to all his weapons at one time EVEN BETTER!!!
Yet I am not fully against NT doing this game. Sure HS was an ok game and I own it but I have never played it more than twice, yet I still play DMC3 and DMC4 all the time, I don't think they could screw up DMC5 to bad.. I hope... I guess we will have to wait and see. I just pray to god that they don't ruin my favorite game.
