Rumor: NHL 2K11 likely canceled, 2K Sports in trouble? photo

2K Sports sure seems to be struggling right now. In the wake of Thursday’s announcement that parent company Take-Two expects to post a loss of $137.9 million this year -- which is largely the fault of poor performance from 2K Sports’ baseball games -- comes a rumor that the next installment in the publisher’s hockey series, NHL 2K11, may have been axed.

Yesterday, Pastapadre noticed that NHL 2K11 was nowhere to be found on Take-Two’s Q4 fiscal 2009 results in the section of games that the publisher is currently planning to ship in 2010. (Both MLB 2K10 and NBA 2K11 are listed on the report.) Chris Littman at The Sporting News’ FirstCuts blog asked 2K Sports for comment, and this is what a PR rep told him:

We are currently in the process of evaluating our sports portfolio and have not announced any new NHL titles at this time.

That’s a damning statement if I’ve ever seen one. Littman pointed out that if NHL 2K is no more, the franchise appears to be dying the same death as the publisher’s College Hoops 2K series. After College Hoops 2K8 released in November 2007, the company remained quiet on the future of the franchise before announcing in January 2008 that it had ended negotiations with the Collegiate Licensing Company (which, as you may have guessed, controls licensing for college sports) and would not be making any more College Hoops games.

Hit the jump for some more thoughts on what this could mean for 2K Sports.

This is not an entirely shocking prospect for 2K Sports, whose NHL 2K games have been badly outsold in the past two years by EA Sports’ celebrated hockey titles. Competition in the simulation sports genre is very tough, to be sure: NHL 2K9 and 2K10 weren’t bad games, by most accounts, but it just so happened that NHL 09 and NHL 10 were better. If it turns out that this is, indeed, the end of NHL 2K, then I’m sad for all the folks at developer Visual Concepts who may soon be out of work.

I also worry for the future of 2K Sports as a publisher. Their existence seems like it’s being increasingly marginalized on all fronts:

  • the MLB 2K games that have come out since Take-Two bid reportedly $40 million for an exclusive third-party development license -- MLB 2K6, 2K7, 2K8, and 2K9 -- have been poor, to say the least, compared to Sony’s spectacular MLB The Show series (especially the last two years);
  • EA’s recent hockey games have just been better than 2K’s;
  • thanks to EA’s exclusive NFL license, the company can’t even make a football videogame.

Only their highly acclaimed NBA 2K franchise remains a dependable success, and even that was challenged by a solid effort from EA this year in NBA Live 10. And with Take-Two’s recently stated preference to put out easily marketable titles for hardcore gamers (“the safest place to be is in triple-A,” said CEO Strauss Zelnick) -- games like BioShock 2 and Max Payne 3 -- I wonder if the company will continue to bother (or can afford to continue bothering) trying to compete in the sports game market, or at least in any sport other than basketball.

What do you guys think?

EA's NHL title is better.
They might be better off to take a year off and rebuild the 2k hockey game from scratch. I'd hate to see it gone though, without competition EA could get lazy.

well if their hockey games are as bad as their baseball games I wouldn't be surprised.

It's not surprising, given the tremendous quality of EA's NHL games this generation and the lack of improvement in 2K's own NHL series. I'd hate to see NHL 2K go, but perhaps they can take a year off, start from scratch and attempt to make a more realistic hockey game. As the audience of these games gets older, they become more attuned to the nuances of the sports, making realism probably the #1 priority for a lot of gamers out there. Especially in a sport like hockey, where the fanbase is arguably more passionate about their team and the sport itself than any of the other major sports in North America.

It's just a shame that 2K has had such a fall from grace. Their sports games were so much better than EA's efforts last generation, but this generation, outside of basketball, they've never really gotten anything "right". People complained about EA buying the NFL license, but I've always felt that the worst thing to come out of that was 2K's knee-jerk reaction to purchase the MLB license in retaliation, the same year that EA put out their best baseball game ever in the form of MVP Baseball 2005. The spirit of MVP baseball now lives in in MLB The Show, but if you don't own a PS3 (or PS2), your only baseball option is 2K's abysmal multiplatform titles.

You put out a shitty product year after year while your competition blows you out of the water, what do you expect will happen?

2K should have died after they lost the NFL license. Their sports games were never really that great other than the amazing football ones.

That's what they get for entirely ignoring the best baseball franchise they've stumbled upon in recent years - MLB Power Pros.

Basketball is the only 2k sports title i really enjoy..EA has me for Hockey and Madden is my only choice....Baseball I buy every year expecting it to better every year, and every year i am sorely dissapointed. I can see most people wouldn't even buy it. Me, I buy it because I need my baseball fix...maybe this is the year i switch over to Sony's baseball...

As many people have already said, after NHL 2k10 was effectively nuked by the brilliance of NHL 10 I'm not exactly shedding tears here. EA have just upped their game to the point where it feels like 2k can't compete anymore.

who cares bout NHL 2k or MLB 2k (The Show FTW)? If they stop making the fantastic NBA 2k series I'll incite a riot!!

I don't really care for the sports side but i think Take Two could actually be in trouble i mean whoever thought Sega or Midway where going to die as quick as they did, I just hope Bioshock 2 and Spec Ops do good because in the past few years Take Two as a whole has published some belter games and it would be a shame to see them go.

It's not just 2K Sports, the whole company is in trouble. They're just not putting out enough to really be a viable company outside of their big releases.

Glad I'm not the only who liked Power Pros.

This surprises me not. Take-Two has been going the way of Acclam this whole gen. The only difference is they've actually been putting out decent titles.

As long as they keep on making the NBA 2K series, I don't care much, I guess. Although I always liked the analog pitching in MLB 2K8 before they dumbed it down for last year's version. If The Show would offer it as an option, it would be great.

Xzyliac - I still play Power Pros 2008 and I managed to get my hands on the Japanese Power Pros 2009, the catcher career mode is pretty fun :P

The NHL 2k games had a lot more game modes that shouldve been put in NHL10 unfortunately the gameplay of the 2k games sucks dick.

2k and EA should merger and combine both franchises for an amazing game.

Actually NHL 2K3-2K7 were much better than EA's offerings. It wasn't until NHL 08 that the tide started to turn, then 09 and 10 blew 2K out of the water.

With EA Sports practices, I'm close to never buying a sports game again.

it's simple: stop making shitty games, yet 2k sports hasn't picked up on that idea.

they hit their peak with the "2k5" series of games and gradually have gotten worse every year since.

i have always felt that the EA titles were far superior to the 2K titles. i always found that the 2K titles were actually very bad games apart from 2K9, which was still worse than NHL 09

This years EA isn't as great as all these website reviewers make it out to be. The online is having issues with cheaters. Curve shots are still in it. The holding against the boards is bad. Stops the flow of the game. Passing is horrible no matter what mode you play. 2K10 actually isn't that bad this year. I know alot of players that switched. Even ones that were in some of the top online teams from last years EA tourney. Everyone that says EA is king in NHL doesn't remember that 4 years ago it was taking hit and 2K was better. It wasn't until NHL 08, which is the best of the new control scheme, that EA finally started taking the number one spot. 2K7 was a great hockey game. 2K8 should have been better but they didn't change much. If 2K11 were to go in its current direction it would be a more successful game. EA is only doing well this year because it made its game for those that haven't played NHL before. Those type of casual gamers get all excited by the fact that you can be held up against the boards and the first person fighting. Without NHL 2K series EA will start to make games with just basic roster updates. They where doing that with Madden until this year. I used to love EA games but they are getting lazy!!

This would be sad for a developer that definitely does have some talent.
They may have to really innovate for their sports to take on some sort of unique angle in order to compete with the other big names.
I've heard their NHL game for the Wii did some good things for the sport on the console.

I don't care about other sports besides basketball, so I'm good. NBA 2K is kind of a big deal to me and after all the (100% well-deserved) shit I've talked about NBA Live it would be a shame to have to buy that game in a few years.

But seriously, Hockey? Who the fuck cares about hockey? Samit, can you even name like the last 3 Stanly Cup winners off the dome, no-google?
