Multiple sources are coming out from their anonymous burrows to share a prediction that Microsoft will launch its next-generation console in 2013, just in time for Christmas.
Several projects are said to be in development for the system, including a new Fable game codenamed Fable Next. All signs point toward a reveal at next year's E3.
As rumors escalate concerning new systems for the Xbox and PlayStation brands, it looks certain that we're reaching the end. It'll be interesting to see just how big a technological leap is possible in the next chapter, not to mention where this will leave the Wii U.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Times like these I wish I had a Time machine
I think console games are getting too big for themselves. They cost too much to make and are all treated like AAA Blockbusters that are expected to sell Call of Duty numbers or be considered failures.
If console gaming continues to trend the way it has been lately, will we be paying $30 for PS4/XBOX720 discs that contain only an intro FMV and a main menu screen with nothing but the following options: "Replay Intro", "Purchase game ($29.99)"?
Did you miss the part saying "rumor" up there?
Or a Superhero sandbox game where you can actually customize your powers to have many different ones.
Or a zombie game that also goes around the world.

My body is ready.
Funny, I was just going to post about the Vita. Although, there is more a point to be made with the vita and console connectivity.
Around the time the new Xbox and PS console arrives, the Ps Vita+ps3 combo will be around 200 to 300 usd and there would be more than enough cross compatibility and stand alone content on the respective console and handheld to keep me interested half way past te next gen.
As console, I do look forward to the new ps and Xbox console more so than nintendo's attempts.
My biggest fear is that this next gen of consoles become just another stepping stone towards "OnLive gaming" where you don't actually own any gaming content, it's all just data stored on servers that you borrow the licenses for in order to play.
Horse Armor -> Map Packs -> Catwoman single player codes -> ????? -> OnLive
Backwards compatible?
Yes I share that fear. My personal internet connection which i have no option of raising, cannot support that kind of bandwidth load.
Jimmyx will be typing his comment with one hand, after hitting the caps lock button that is.
The good thing is, we're finally going to get that boost to video game engines where Pc hardware will actually get utilized.
The only next-gen console I've got my eye on is the Wii U and if that ends up not appealing to me, then I'm definitely done with modern gaming. I'll just continue to follow news on it here on Dtoid like I do now while my PS2 and Wii (once I get one) continue to see regular play.
Which is why the wiiu will be a godsend.
All signs point to it being as powerful as current gen systems, but I expect it to also be more stable and easier to develop for.
People act like a giant graphical leap is imminent, or necessary, and don't realize that such a leap will only make games more expensive and difficult to make. What we need is a refined system with a focus on performance and games that are a more complete package, as opposed to what we had just 3 years ago: somewhat pretty games riddled with bugs and glitches
I hold the same concern! I better be able to transfer all of my stuff from the old system to the new system, keep the same email/account and all that jazz.
I don't think they would change that though, that would be horrible.
all nextgen consoles have to be backwards compatible - no more ps3 bullshit. i already have over 40 mint xbox360 games that need to be played at some point.
Exactly, backwards compatibility is my deciding factor in getting any new system. That's why I'm not getting a Wii and skipping straight to the WiiU, since I already have a Gamecube. :)
I don't disagree with ronin4life, it would be nice if they eschewed graphics for the sake of quality, I just don't see that happening, as if that were the case, the wii should have gotten a ton of games that put gameplay over graphics (but without graphics, the games just don't seem to get support).
(that really annoys me for some reason)
True but lately these rumors have been getting more and more credible.
