Rumor: New Xbox 360 Ultimate to have 1080p HDMI, IPTV, HD-DVD, cure for cancer photo

Not satisfied with your Premium, Elite, Arcade, or Core Xbox 360 systems? What say you about the luxurious Xbox 360 Ultimate? Stuff.tv is reporting (as fact, as if they know something we don't) that Microsoft is set to launch a new Xbox 360 SKU come Fall 2008.

Dubbed the Xbox 360 Ultimate, the new unit will contain everything but the cure for cancer (sorry if we got your hopes up). The Web arm of the UK tech magazine is reporting that the new unit will feature 1080p HDMI output, built in Wi-Fi, hi-def audio ouput, cooler hardware, an extremely quiet fan, and a built in HD-DVD drive. You know, everything you wanted from the system when it launched two years ago.

Right now, we're regarding this as a rumor. But with CES right around the corner, we're likely to hear more on such a beast shortly. What are you guys doing on Sunday?

I'm not sure why people are so ticked off. None of the "new" features render older systems obsolete.

If people want to flex their e-penis to the tune of $600, let them. I still get to play all the games on my regular model.

The instant they start releasing games on HD-DVD that don't work with the standard DVD drive -- THEN I'll be pissed.

Big time waste for people with the Elite,
making people with the console already feel well ripped off,

they're laughing all the way to the bank with this one.

Umm, I'm fairly sure my Premium does 1080p through component...

As for HD-Audio, I downloaded The Matrix in HD yesterday and it had pro logic soundtrack.. FFS, I can download it for free with DTS so wtf MS?

I bet its something a lot less that most people are thinking. When was the last time a major game company told everyone they have super awesome news, and it turns out to be actually super awesome. I believe Stuff TV, what ever the fuck that is, is talking out of their ass.

My guesses (in no particular order)

1: motion sensing controller
2: Multiple colors for the premium/elite/arcade
3: Add-on BluRay player, much like the HD Player

No company would release info on a new device so far away from a launch date. It basically spells murder for their other consoles.

Yeah, I agree with MaxVest and the others who have noted that it doesn’t make sense for MS to announce a new SKU now and say it won’t be out for 8–10 months. I still don’t see any reason for them to put an HD DVD drive in the damn unit, considering they wouldn’t put games out on the format (that would obviously piss off everyone who didn’t have the “Ultimate” model). Also, why would they come out with something that’s priced higher than the PS3’s lower-priced configuration?

Wouldn't it be cool if this box is actually intended to be an option for cable companies.

Instead of them installing one of their own set top boxes for their cable systems, they could offer instead a 360 like this one which not only does HD-DVD's, but also IPTV and DVR and Games. With all the features of the 360, I could see where that could be possible. But then again, everyone is so greedy that the royalties/licensing fees would be setup so that cable companies would want to do their own thing as usual...

Like i said before, its gonna be cooler chipset and a price drop! Makes no sense to release a new SKU with HD-DVD especially when MS are all for downloads etc!! You gys are dumb! Maybe a bigger HDD will be realesed too for all those new films we got in the UK and Europe.

OR they will announce HDD file transfer for games, so you dont get stupid texture pop ups and shite loading times!! now that would be Schweet!

What is this gaming era all about, when we get remixed versions of consoles or something. It used to be you'd buy a console and it's abilities never changed for the entire run, unless you added a peripheral to it, but that was rare and often failed. The most they'd do is change the outter covering and call it like - The Sega Genesis mark II or something, but nowadays they're revamping systems, like they gave it to Xzibit on Pimp my Rides. WTF I mean, I have to buy the system again? This is crazy. Bill thinks consoles are computers or something. Where they evolve every few years.

Yeah, I don't think MS believes enough in HD DVD's long term viability to release it in a console.

If anything it'll be the long rumored IPTV platform. Maybe a 200GB drive. Have it be silver colored.

Or hot pink.

If true, as a recent Premium owner, it doesn't make me angry. At all.

1. I have HDMI and HD-DVD (attached).

2. I wouldn't use the wireless if it was there (hard cabled - ALL THE WAY!).

3. My Comcast DVR is good enough.

4. 1080p? My plasma is 720p (50" Panasonic).

They all play the same games!

I dunno, I'm no expert, but before buying my TV. I did my homework as best I could. I know that 1080p isn't as widely supported yet and some say you can't tell the difference, but what I did notice. After having so many store clerks test out TVs for me. Is how the 1080p models. At least the LCD ones I saw, had no breakup in the picture when fast motion or quick action and explosions occured. Now I don't know if 1080p had anything to do with this, I did watch 1080i on 1080p sets and still no breakup, yet the 720p's all had pixelazation, blocky artifacts occuring when any fast motion occured. So basically what I noticed is, no 1080p models I saw did this, but the 720p models did. That's when I was sold on 1080p.

Gridl0k:

Component can't do 1080p. The media companies worked with the electroniics companies to ensure that, because component doesn't include all the anti-piracy tech that HDMI does. The highest component can go is 1080i, not that there is any noticable difference on TV's less than 60".

I didn't catch the part where it has a web browser. What, you mean it doesn't? Hell, even the Wii does. It kinda sucks, but at least it's there.

It's pretty sad that iPods and cell phones got built-in wifi before the Xbox did.

SkaGoblin is right on! Supposedly though, some HD channels are gonna start broadcasting 1080p signals in Feb of 09. I have an HDMI cable for my Comcast box. So I'm ready.

@SkaGoblin, didnt madCatz release a HDMI cable for all versions of the 360?? think they did.

@orionsaint 720p should be a smoother picture than 1080i as it draws twice, if there was break up it shoul dbe on the interlaced model...just the way it works.....

i have a samsung 1080i LCD i cant notice the difference between 720p and 1080i so i lef tit on 1080i, looks great..

@cyyocide theres no webbrowser as its connected to live servers not the www, if you open it to the web you are gonna have to do what PS3 is thinking about....antivrus....slowdown will entail! You have a pc for the web, stick with it!

I know there making and replacing broken 360 with 3ROD with ones that run quieter and don't cook the consoles components. But to throw all this shit into basically the same console is a massive pile of shit. If its the case then they can take my current xbox 360 and replace it with this new one. I dont think they will do it considering they have got a HD-DVD player add on out, they must be dumb to make their own products obsolete.

Just wait for your current 360 to 3ROD and then they will probably send you a updated one. Thats what im hoping for, if not then...

"Hello Mr. GAME, yeah id like to buy a PS3.... oh and trade in 20 360 games and a the 300£ worth of accessories and console. SOOOO how much i owe you for the PS3? 300£!! WHAT THE FUCK!"

Whats the bloody point? I mean this is a kick in the teeth for those who bought the 'Elite'. I have a 'Premium, and yeah, I like it. (I still play EDF2017 and Crackdown to death!)
Purely copying what the PS3 is capable of is shameful, at least PS3 manages to get you online for free (including gaming, I refuse to pay for online gaming through 'Live as I won't always be using it.), with built in Wlan. You could say the PS3 copied the Wii (with Sixasis), but didn't XBOX (1) copy the PS2? Everyone always takes elements of consoles onto others (The Xbox pad is similar to the DC's layout)
Microsoft ain't nothing but a bunch of money grabbing, opportunity waiting sods. Why did they even bother bringing out the Elite if this is on the way?
At this rate, how on earth are they going to bring out a 8th Gen console later on?

I think it would be a mistake for Microsoft to include the HD-DVD drive in a new SKU of the 360. There is already some confusion between the SKUs among the general consumer and adding another version would only make things worse. That and it sends a mixed message of whether they are focusing on selling a game system or a multimedia device. Sony has been trying to sell the PS3 as a multimedia device and they haven't done so well in doing so.

Microsoft needs to focus on making the 360 known as a gaming system first and foremost. They can always have additional features that somebody can buy afterwards, like the HD-DVD drive and whatnot.

Theres a lot of factors that could affect why HDTV may vary from show to Show. it could be that some shows/stations use higher compression rates than other, some may use better equipment, and some stations broadcast in 720p while others are in 1080i. also, unless you're watching the digital hi def ABC station, you'll just get the analog 480i signal upscaled and deinterlaced, which looks like crap on HDTVs

Premium (w/o HDMI)

Elite
Ultimate

Don't you mean MS is going to be the new MS?

Cuz sony did 4 SKUs not 7.

I dont know why they point out 1080p all 360's can do 1080p some require particular TV's for 1080p over component but can most definitely over the vga connecter(so admitadly this is not an option for everyone)but all the ones with hdmi can. I dont use HDMI so not sure what kind of audio can be transfered over that I seem to have heard something that it is not the super high end uber audio porn that the hardcore hometheater users want on the current units.

I don't have an issue with the MS sku's cause they dont forget what they are at there core, a games system. Adding features people want is one thing taking them away is another. I do take issues with the SKU's on the PS3 cause they take funtionality away and looking at releases over seas it seems that this may be a perminate trend(I hope not) I have a 60 GB model with full BC but if I ever have to replace it I dont want to lose funtionality(I bought my system when the upscaling came out I value the feature not to mention the CD drawer on my PS2 was sticking so it was not long for this world)

I am regretting putting the 360 on my Christmas list. Even though my system is from October and has the falcon chip, the newest ones are supposed to be much quieter. And now this?

The only thing that is actually missing is a built-in 360 Wireless adapter. 360 is freaking skittish when you hook it up to a client bridge with other consoles and try to run media center.

@SkaGoblin,

My 47" LG LCD does 1080p over component @ 60Hz - and my Xbox 360, which has the component leads, gives me the option to support a 1080p TV.

I know there's industry "guidelines" or whatever to keep 1080p stuff limited to HDMI/HDCP but doesn't seem to be the case.
