Rumor: New studio working on Call of Duty, also MMO photo

The Call of Duty franchise is already split between two studios, Infinity Ward and Treyarch, but an LA Times report seems to hint the series may soon be taken roughly by a third. The report also claims that an MMO based on the Call of Duty universe is being considered.

"As Activision seems to be discovering this year with Guitar Hero, there's danger when a title is overexposed with too many iterations," explains the report. "Nonetheless, the publisher has aggressive expansion plans for Call of Duty. Although Infinity Ward and Treyarch have produced sequels in alternating years since 2005, the publisher now has a third development studio working on future versions.

"One person close to the company said it also was considering adapting Call of Duty as a massively multi-player online world. The genre, in which Activision's Blizzard Entertainment subsidiary is a leader, requires huge upfront investments but can be very profitable as players pay a monthly subscription fee."

Talk of a Call of Duty MMO is nothing new, although the idea of a third studio creating games is interesting. Perhaps the third studio can do ones set in the future or something. It's bound to happen sooner or later.

An MMO in the Call of Duty Universe, wouldn't that be silly?

A CoD MMO sounds great now, but remember, there won't be any dedicated servers.

At this point, all I want is for the Modern Warfare story to be left alone until Infinity Ward comes back to it.

I don't think we're talking MMORPG here; probably just a massive online game that you have to pay a couple bucks a month to play. I personally am okay with paying nothing to play Modern Warfare 2.

I would be okay with paying nothing to play MW2 as well, but that would require someone giving me the game for free

@whormongr: You aren't paying to play the game, but to purchase it. Once you buy it, it's yours, no monthly subscription required, unless of course your console of choice is the 360.

Oh great, as if this already unending stream of stories about Modern Warfare 2 wasn't enough, that's the last thing I would want or need: to be flooded with an unending stream of stories about a fucking Call of Duty MehMehOh. Maybe this site should just be renamed either MW2toid or CoDtoid?

I always wanted a shooter that was thousands of square miles long and wide. I wanted a real war experiance where there are hundreds of towns and villages one team on one side one on the others. THousands of players on each side. Planes, tanks, infantry i want it ALL. Activison if you can give me this i will never back talk you again.

@Zeta Crossfire: That sounds great, but it's the players, not the developer standing in the way of something like that happening. I guess it sort of happened in EVE, but I can't see it happening with CoD.

Let every player be on one server that would work. Or if theres not a lot of people on throw some veteran AI into the mix to even up the teams. Thousands and thousands of people and AI would be insane.

Activision is really trying to whore call of duty out i mean seriously besides Guitar hero Call of duty is a huge cash cow. We are now starting to witness the massive corporatization (if thats a word) of our games instead of apealing to the actual gamer audience Publishers are just realesing games for money. I mean seriously Why the fuck would i want to play a call of duty MMO i just bought MW2.
*slaps face* i honestly believe Activision was like no dedicated servers to really shorten the life span of each game so they can just bring out another a year later making more money. This is just sad. I am not going to buy another COD game unless its infinity ward.

But cod mmo? No fucking thanks. Whats the betting it will play like all the other cods, perhaps have a more drawn out leveling system, to keep people playing and cost as much as two new games a year.

No thanks kotick, off you fuck.

@Sexualchocolate - but isn't MAG purely instance based? Which means that at most times you shouldn't be able to see more than 15 players. The closest game to what he speaks of is probably Arma 2, with an absolutely huge game area and basically unlimited number of players (the player cap is limited only by server resources, and I've seen stable decent-ping servers with 100+ players).

This could go two ways- Awesome or Horrible shit.

Awesome if they do the way Planetside did it.

Horrible shit if they do it the way Huxley does it.

And I've got a bad feeling it's not going to be the way Planetside was.

I can't believe it, it's just... damn, my enrish is not that good to express myself here.
What's wrong with you, Jim? Three fucking studios on one franchise is interesting? How come?
Activision is a vampire hooker pregnant with shit and she is selling heroin to kids. Do you know how drug addiction is treated in Serbian churches? The priest takes a fucking shovel and beats the filth out of a junkie. And that's what should be done here. Seriously, modern gaming industry is in desperate need of some holy inquisition.
Do you see what Activion is doing to me? I feel little Hitler awakening inside me.
I've played MW2 and I liked it pretty much, but at the end, I felt like I had enough of that stuff. Infinity Ward needs to move forward and stop making COD games, they need to evolve. I feel like an idiot writing all this and at the same time seeing 'Modern Warfare 2 pulls in $550 million in five days' headline, but uh... These guys have a lot of potential, and if they'll make another COD game they'll just waste it.
The series gained it's popularity with it's cinematic campaign. And now every person is picking up a new COD game for a multiplayer. MW2 is okay, but I don't think it deserves a game of the year title.
If in the future most of AAA games will be like a summer blockbuster movie with a multiplayer, I'll just loose any interest in gaming and I don't want that.
If this industry will rot someday, guys like Activision will be the ones to blame.

@reindall - MAG Instance based? 15 players at a time? - no sir. 256 players, but only once you get to a higher level. There's a preview on here somewhere.

I'm personally looking forward to "not so taylored" maps, you know on COD where, A is a sniper point, B is a roof you can get onto, C is a hiding in a corner camping spot?

I'm hoping MAG has more realistic maps...

It bugs me playing MW2 where you'll find a nice spot to shoot from, but they've clearly found it during testing and lowered a building to give a counter spot. There are very few places on COD maps where you don't have people coming at you from multiple angles, unless a clearly designed closed alleyway or other camping spot.

Realistic maps + 256 players are my hopes for MAG.

Just make maps realistic!!!

I remember the jokes of a COD MMO being whored out when Activision merged with Blizzard. Silly silly jokes about something that would be silly if it ever happened. Not that it ever would, because it was just silly jokes.

I guess you can't teach an old dog new tricks. Or in this case, you can't teach Activision not to whore out their successful IPs with semi-annual iterations. They're caught in a vicious cycle of having a successful game, and then milking it with as many sequels and spinoffs a year as they can before people get sick of it. They killed Tony Hawk that way, they've almost finished killing Guitar Hero that way, and now they plan on killing Call of Duty that way. Will they ever learn? I think not.

to be fair it'll probably go somewhat like Huxley http://www.huxleygame.com
now i don't mean it'll be exactly like it but just understand what im trying to point out here that it COULD work rather doubtful but to be fair if blizzard are working on it, the story will be decent atleast or it'll simply be a open world fps...
