Rumor: New studio at work on Apocalypse Now game photo

Killspace Entertainment, an officially unannounced game development company consisting of former employees of Red 5, Obsidian, Pandemic and EA LA might be hard at work on a game based on Francis Ford Coppola's Vietnam war epic, Apocalypse Now.

The evidence? First is the knowledge that the company out of Calabasas, California has a project based on a licensed IP. But that could be anything. The real meat is in the recent registration of "apocalypsenowgame.com," which bears the company's name as the registering organization. The thematically similar "warisnotagame.net" has also been registered.

I can see how this classic film can be made into a game. I just can't see the why apart from cashing in. Even now, I foresee the immensely sad irony that will come as teenagers laugh uproariously at the scene where Kilgore napalms the tree line so his men can go surfing. God willing, they'll skip on the minigame there.

Apocalypse Now Game May Be Coming from Former Mercenaries, Saboteur Devs [1Up]

It's official. Vietnam is about to be popular in games.

As long as the soundtracks are kickass.

Remember when they tried to make Taxi Driver and Dirty Harry into games? This is just as pointless.

I can't wait for the entertaining BS hype on how this game will compliment (even surpass) the film.

you cant make it into a game. atleast not an entertaining one. lots of apocalypse now is just sitting around on boats and beaches while they build tension. Its not a war film, its an anti war film, and for that reason, it wont work as an fps, which im assuming is the desired outcome.

This could either be the game that gives us a glimpse of games being accepted as proper works of art.. actually, no, it HAS to be to be of any gracing service to the original, or the book which it was devised from. The alternative is.. unthinkably bad- A Bog standard shooter set in vietnam.
Completely ignoring the actual theme and message of the movie and just putting up a scene-for-scene facsimile would be an insult to both gaming AND Frank Coppola.

If this shit turns out fo real facts, These guys better be handling this with better care than ANY other developer out there with how they go about this thing.

This needs to be an open-world game. Catch a USO show, surf, hassle random peasant boats on the river, etc. The Kurtz mission could be just one of many. Sounds like fun!

This random announcement comes at a randomly strange time: I'm learning about Apocalypse Now in two of my classes right now.

That said, I'm gonna hold my reservations for this one. I will be surprised if it does the source material justice.

You're about 20 years too late. :/

I think Courtney Roberts brings up a valuable point on making what will probably be an FPS from an anti-war themed source.

Granted I've never seen the film but if it truly is anti-war I think making a war game out of it is disgustingly disrespectful to it's creators.

I really hope this just turns out to be a rumor. There's no possible way that a game could improve on that movie, or even do it justice.

I wish they would make a Citzen Kane videogame, just so they could put to bed what the Citizen Kane of videogames is.

Maybe it'll be a management game like The Movies... only less focus on making the film, and more focus on resuscitating Martin Sheen after his 4th coke-induced heart attack?

You're missign the point, Apocalypse Now wasn't a war movie of the normal blow-stuff up variety. It was a trip up a river that was meant to be an exploration of the entire dark side of humanity that's meant to make you question what you thought you knew at the start. It could have been set in ANY war, it wasn't important to the story.

If you make a game for Apocalypse Now that puts all the focus on gook shooting and the Charlie Don't Surf scene, you are missign the premise by a few miles.

The greatest war movie of all time IMHO. No anti-war message in it beyond fleeting reflections--it is much more a psychological thriller. If it is an action game it fails. If survival-horror it has a fighting chance.

Leeching off another materpiece = instant recognition on the shelf, which is commercial gold dust, especially for new franchises.

I have trouble seeing how a video game can effectively convey the atmosphere and feelings the movie presented. I'm not saying it can't be done but I am highly doubtful. I'll keep an eye out for it as it develops and see where it goes.

I shall remain cautiously optimistic about this. Apocalypse Now is one of my all time favorite movies, but Spec Ops: The Line is doing the same thing. I hope this doesn't become another Dante's Inferno.

Probably might be my fav movie of all time, this news sort of upsets me, but I'm skeptical as to whether this could really happen. I can't think of any game studio that could take this movie and translate it to an interactive medium in such a way where the end result could possibly appeal to anybody who appreciated the film. Make a videogame inspired by the mood and themes conveyed in Apocalypse Now? F* yeah, give it a shot. Make a videogame based on the movie itself? Ughhh, weak idea.

And there's no way that (if the game actually gets developed and you play as Willard) this game would ever be released as a shooter, no one's that dumb. Think it's doubtfully this game would be adapted as any type of action game for that matter if it's really based on the events of the film (Willard doesn't exactly kill alot of people in the movie). I'd imagine it'd end up as something different from a shooter, maybe something in the style of Heavy Rain or something...who knows. Still unhappy with the news.

It either could be really cool, or suck terribly. It's a licensed game and the title will probably sell more units than the quality of the game so I won't be giving it the benefit of the doubt.

Apocalypse Now wasn't an anti-war movie. I'm so sick of hearing that. No more than Heart of Darkness was protesting the ivory trade. The Vietnam War, just like the Congo jungle, just happened to be a good setting for the plot, which has more to do with the inherent evil and "darkness" of mankind than it does with war.

Yeah Keegah. And toadie kind of touched on it: Vietnam was just a setting, it wasn't about Vietnam, and many would argue (Coppola himself included) that it wasn't about war at all.

As someone mentioned.... Far Cry 2 took a LOT of influence from Apocalypse Now, and while the storyline in the game wasn't amazing, the atmosphere and immersion was.

However... making a game of Apocalypse Now?

NO.

Just look at the Godfather and Scarface games... they turned out to be be classics </sarcasm>
