Nintendo released the DSi just this year, but there are already rumors that a brand new system is in the works, and this could be a very big one. Gossip has surfaced concerning a new generation of DS. The "DS2" would be a complete overhaul with the system getting some serious power courtesy of the Zune HD processor.
Nvidia has allegedly won a contract to provide Nintendo's DS2 with Tegra chips, replacing the current DS' pair of sluggish processors with something considerably meatier. It's also been said that the new DS will be backwards compatible, not only making it a significant upgrade, but a significant upgrade that would shame the PSPgo and all its stupid design flaws.
The big meat of this rumor is that the DS2 could arrive as early as next year, which would be a potential kick in the teeth for anybody buying a DSi. I guess we'll have to just sit tight and wait for news. Whatever happens with the DS2, you can bet that Nintendo will keep it under lock and key for the foreseeable future. I hope it's not called DS2 though. That name looks horrible written down.
They should call it a DSgo.

Might even hold out on that DSi I've got my eye on.
sure when sony does it people explode,
when nintendo does it, its just nintendo being nintendo.
granted i dont care much for them either way. i havnt touched my psp since gta:lcs came out. just not much of a portable gamer. if im sitting around doing nothing its usually in front of my tv.
Sony, you getting killed in the Handheld market, better get your shit together cuz looks like you are fading like Sega.
I'm still rocking an original DS (Mario Kart red ftw), and was planning on picking up a lite because a certain something doesn't work on the DSi, but maybe I'll wait a little longer. DS2 is lame, and redundant. Also it's repetitive.
DSΩ maybe?
It's not like we can do anything else, anyway.
I'd buy a DS2 or whatever if it has better graphics. That's my only complaint about the system anyway, and it's really a minor one since there are so many sprite-based games. If it has the power of, say, a Gamecube, and maybe more buttons, it'd be nice to perhaps finally see that portable Smash Bros. everybody wants. Of course, they might have to switch to discs instead of cartridges.
You're missing out on the Mega Man ZX series.
I mean I am all up for better graphics and multiple uses like my iphone, it does so much. So I don't care if Nintendo or Sony do it first, I just want them to do it! I want a portable PS2 powerhouse handheld that can play FF14 remotely and record video of my self when I tea bag defeated people in MvsC2/TvsC.
The next console rumor stream is starting.
IT'S STARTING!
Sony is screwing up their handheld department. Which makes me wonder if they can't ever get their shit right, for their home console department is, for the first time in 3 years, working like a charm.
Not to mention backwards compatibility. This will be a VERY tough battle for Sony, given that I don't see a retro-compatible PSP2. UMDs are awful and they know it, and their slot is way too spacious. I only can see it happening if they go all-digital with a UMD slot. And, if that's the case, the already expected-to-be huge price will be increased even further. Besides screwing the Go owner.
Sony's in a tight spot here and they deserved it. It's only more annoying that there's so much good software for it, which makes the company's fault even more astonishingly blatant.
Please no! God no! NOOOOOOOOO!!!!
And people just started to buy PS3's! It's craaazy.
@Springsteen, they could also use read only flash cards for games, those are cheap now
If Nintendo really is powerhousing on graphics next gen, I'm going to be the happiest man alive. I'm sick of the brand getting a bad rap for being "lazy" on graphics, there's no reason for them to stay behind the curve.
This is where Nintendo are clever. They know that sales of DSi will drop off sooner or later, just as the Wii is starting too. Apple are now competition as well as Sony, and Apple update their products annually. Perhaps if Nintendo moved to such a similar plateau, they might stand to benefit. Whether they will trump Apple is another thing, but DS games speak for themselves. I think the true golden bullet of handhelds is to have a console, that does both what the PSP and DS can do in one package. Add good online play and connectivity between home and handheld systems, and that would rock.
Don't be surprised if Nintendo have plans for their next home system using similar chips. Its the right time to take advantage of Sony's foolishness, too.
They should also make both screens into touch screens. I'm sick of stupidly tapping on the top screen expecting things to happen.
@Ben Perlee:It is indeed. I actually love it. Hurts my pocket, but I'll be dammed if there's anything videogame-related more pleasant than setting up and turning on a brand new console. Specially one that promises a shift in the way you perceive gaming, be it motion controllers, touch screens or high definition. Those classy introductions to a new console are priceless(Nintendo should make the safety warning ditch-able and add a proper console opening screen, by the way). If they deliver or not, that's another story. Damm you capitalism.
But, I'd like to point out to everybody here, that this IS a pretty unsubstantiated rumour.
Goddammit, Nintendo. Yes, it's only rumours, but knowing Nintendo this is entirely likely and is quite possibly what they plan to show off at E3 '10.
And because it's a frikken Nintendo handheld (not a single one has let me down...well the DSi did. A little), I'll end up buying it because I'm a cheap Nintendo whore.
It's really stupid for DSi owners, but seeing as I never bought into the DSi, this is pretty decent news for me.
Yyyyep.
I think that it will have around PSP level graphics, hopefully an analog nub, and some kind of media card reader. I do hope, however, that the focus won't shift entirely to 3D games. And I don't even care about the touch screen. That's not what made the DS awesome to me. It was really just the great 1st and 3rd party support. It really doesn't matter what features a system has, as long as it's getting support, it will be good.
Also, Sony is fucked on both fronts unless they pull a Nintendo level comeback. I hope they weren't serious about all this 10 year life cycle bullshit. You don't implement a 10 year plan on video game hardware (or really any hardware) unless you know it will be successful and you have a backup just in case. That's basic stuff.
