Rumor: Netflix streaming on the Wii rears its head... again photo

Spotted by Joystiq, the survey suggests a “Netflix Instant Streaming” disc would be required to be in the console in order to stream the content; the disc would be free. Previous questionnaires have noted this disc as well, which would hint that this disc option (versus a new channel update, for instance) seems likely if Netflix does come to the Wii in some capacity.

Joystiq also notes that when the disc was mentioned in the past, it was being offered for $9.99. While the idea of throwing in a Netflix disc to stream content already has us raising our eyebrows, “free” would definitely ease that particular blow.

When contacted for comment, Nintendo was not surprisingly silent; the company’s President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime recently stated that if it were to do streaming on the Wii, it would do something “different.” Netflix on the other hand is all about it, “always looking for ways to expand its service,” but states “for now our game platform is the Xbox 360.”

I guess the real question is, do you really want Netflix on your Wii? Take our poll after the jump and let us know.

I don't own a Wii, but here in Canada we can't get NetFlix on the 360 either, so it wouldn't matter to me anyway. However, I see no reason why it would be a bad thing on the Wii, for people who could get it. It would be DVD quality, and lots of people still buy DVD's, so its a good option to have. Plus its free, so if you don't want it, than just don't use it. I really see no downside to this what-so-ever!

blurry vision is blurry. I want hulu and netflix on ps3 & 360. ps3 so I don't have to maintain my xbl just to watch movies.

I'd rather get some Hulu, but if they made this painless enough (read: drop the disc) why not?

Netflix on the Wii? Not particularly, since I've got it on the 360, so I can watch stuff in HD. But I wouldn't be opposed to it happening. I mean, there are people out there with only Wiis, so they deserve some Netflix action too, right?

If it's free, there really is no downside. I doubt it will be free, though. You'll have to pay somehow.

i could see Netflix charging $1 a month for keeping the load disc. They charge an extra dollar per month if you want blu-ray discs to come instead of dvds when possible, and that service is optional. Also, I have a PowerPC mac, which Netflix doesn't support for their online streaming, nor do I have a 360. So if I could stream Netflix to my Wii, that would be awesome, even if I was charged something extra. I guess it will be SurfTheChannel.com on my PS3 for now.

Is there a reason why Netflix cannot be implemented into the PS3?

That pic is a horrible shoop.

But yeah, why not.

Why not? If it used a disc, then it wouldn't take up my precious WiiWare/VC space, and the people who don't own Xbox 360s can get streaming. From a consumer's perspective, more stuff on more consoles sounds good to me! Bring on the Wii Netflix! And bring it to PS3 while you're at it! And to my cable box! ...and if people don't like it, then they don't have to use it. *shrug*

Ditto what everyone else said. I use (and love) Netflix on my 360, but if it were to be available on the Wii, it just means there would be more options for consumers. That's always a good thing.

I'm on the same page as everyone else. As an Xbox 360 owner, I have Netflix streaming so I would never use it on my Wii, simply because the Wii is incapable of rendering a HD-image. But I'm not opposed to Netflix coming to the Wii, it gives people who don't have Xbox 360s an option to enjoy the same features, albeit in a little strange way.
