Modern Warfare 2 is, first and foremost, a first-person-shooter, but leaked gameplay footage seems to reveal that Infinity Ward's latest guaranteed success will be providing some out of body experiences in the form of a brand new third-person viewpoint. According to reports, somebody managed to nab a PS3 version of the game and started live-streaming it to the public. This is where the big reveal was made.

As you can see from the video, it's Modern Warfare, but not was we know it. According to a captured screenshot of the game's multiplayer match list (translated from German), "Third Person Team Deathmatch" is a brand new multiplayer mode that will let you scope out the arse of your grenade-tossing avatar. There is also a "Cage Match Third Person" mode as well, which we imagine is like the other mode ... but in a cage.

Exciting fun for all the family, eh? It's looking quite genuine, but until Infinity Ward confirms it, we'll relegate it to the rumor bin for now. We'll keep you updated.

[Update: Infinity Ward has confirmed this third-person mode.]

I don't see the point but I guess some people might like to play like this. It's obviously always been possible since you saw teammates in 3rd person when you waited to respawn in COD4.

This could do away with camping at least, given that you'll be able to see what's round every corner before you turn it.

Well from what I've read and seen this is just an option on private matches so no 3rd person on campaign and no 4rd person on public multiplayer.

Mabye they are testing the waters for something bigger? Perhaps an entire COD game in 3D person?

I personally would not want to play a Call of Duty game like this. But more options for people is always good I guess.

Well this opens it up to people who enjoy that kind of thing. I would play it a couple of times just to see what it is like maybe it will make the transition from uncharted 2 a little easier for me

Like SOCOM?

@ Octomom - good point, also, it could just be an extra game mode to test the water for future games.

Boycott.

And I only sat down and played through the entire of COD4 yesterday for the first time to get psyched for this one.

If it ain't broke...

ps. Uncharted 2 has this locked down, IW.

@Clance - U2 may have single-player third person locked down, but the online play is kind of bland. Modern Warfare 2, FTW!!!

Somebody start a petition...

I think it's time to start a media boycott on this game - before every little surprise is ruined.

If they are going to do this, having different modes specifically for it makes perfect sense. I would not want to play like this at all, but those who do would be able to look around corners without making themselves vulnerable, giving them the advantage. If it's true I'll check it out, but I won't be playing in 3rd person regularly.

Hopefully IW will stick to their bread & butter - FPS - and not try to expand to 3rd person. I say this because they will not be able to do it better than Uncharted 2 or Gears of War so why add a blemish to a masterpiece just for the sake of having more features?
In the video I didn't see the character use cover and it reminded me of looking at a mod that someone made. So it seemed to not meet the high quality bar that IW set with COD4.

I liked how you could do this in battlefront, changing between 1st and 3rd person was really useful during battles, more than you realize if you haven't used it

its not an advantage if everyone else can do it.

this is why i love RB6V 1-2 soooo much. FPS+3rd person for cover.

man they need to do a new RB6. "where" is kinda hard to decide. NY city would be cool. awesome sniper missions across buildings. repelling into office buildings taken over by terrorists or something. maybe PETA(joke).
huge multi floor missions,i would love to do a bank robbery hostage situation. that would be awesome.

maybe a new feature could be splitting up into 2 groups of 2 and switching between them on the fly. also 4 player coop online. 2 teams of 2.

single player you can play one team and the other is AI controlled. if you switch to the other team, the AI takes over the other team. like maybe A has to take some hostages out of the building and B has to continue or hold their ground and wait for the other team to return.
maybe not button switchable but at certain check points. or hit select for a map view then you can switch. maybe you cant switch if you are being attacked, but if you are in the clear you can.

wow the more i think about it NY city would be awesome!

I guess they're hoping to pick up some of those disillusioned SOCOM fans that hate the first person view. I can't actually think of many upcoming shooters that are third person view... MAG is fps - and the SOCOM fans have been complaining bitterly.

I certainly don't mind IW adding features to there game, especially if it provides options. For those of you trying to get a laugh by making fun of the petition for dedicated servers... you're idiots. PC gamers aren't upset that they are adding IWNet, they are made because they are removing dedicated servers. If they announced that they were adding third-person view, but removing first-person view, I think this rumor would be received much differently. Again, more options are great, as long as they don't destroy/remove options that were working just fine.

Looks like the one from call of duty 4 where you can with a command be in third person - which is sucks and boring as hell and harder than FPS .

this rumor fails even if it's true, because you just have to play third person on call of duty to understand that.

No this is real, there is a video where the guy goes into the match from the menu and picks his class and goes straight into the game, no spectator mode. FourZeroTwo stated a couple weeks ago that there was something they haven't shown yet that will "make you change the way you play the game". I believe this is it. A couple hours after this video was released last night, 402 posted this on his twitter "Just an FYI, if you're wanting a spoiler free and pure Modern Warfare 2 experience, now would be a good time for a media blackout. #MW2".

I'm not into the CoD series, and this will be my first time buying one, but I see this as a good thing. Maybe I'm just a fan of 3rd person shooting, but games don't need to lose the quality of 1 view point to add another. MGS4 had it right.

I love 3rd person shooters, and the ability to switch between 1st and 3rd is always a plus.

If it's even real, IW won't admit anything about it, at least until the game has been released. They're just going to ignore this. After all, the release is only 2 weeks away.

I assumes its an addition that if i dont like, i can just not play. It sure is interesting but i dont find it all that worth playing over the traditional FPS style.

Maybe this is another push towards the 'streamline' of PC / PS3 / 360 version?
