Rumor: Mo-capped love scene could have Heavy Rain censored photo

I studied Italian when I was younger, but that was all pushed out of my mind later while trying to learn other languages. What I'm saying is that my Italian is sh*t, and that I used Google Translate to help me decode this Italian rumor on Heavy Rain and censorship.

This rumor, found on Upsblogit, says that upcoming PS3 title Heavy Rain may land an 18+ rating due to a love scene. Get this: the scene in question is motion-captured. They say that Sony is pushing on Quantic Dream to tone some of that business down so that a wider audience can be reached with the title.

If this is true, I don't see Quantic Dream's David Cage wanting to dial it back much, if any at all.

Wouldn't you love to see a sex scene controlled by Quick Time Events?

I don't think I would be paying much attention to the quick time events....

Ahem, FAHRENHEIT/INDIGO PROPHECY. There was an unlockable strip tease, two or three nude scenes AND a sex scene.

If the main enemy of the game turns out to be made of ACTUAL Origami, I'll...be very...I'll just facepalm a bit.

Sounds like there's more in this than sex that makes it more for adults. Why the hell would kids wanna play this besides playing what "adults" play?

Either drop the rating, clean up the content and the sex scene, or leave the 18+ and mean it. They're being real careful about walking on eggshells, but ignoring the fact of kitten stomping.

Maybe they could censor the scene with clever placing of the quick time icons.

censorship needs to censor life and the world around us so the children can live in a one sided box built by a preacher with hellfire and brimstone.

Alright. I'm actually Italian and I'll go ahead and translate the article:

"Every fan of Quantic Dream knows how David Cage, the french team's lead developer, has always pushed for more mature and unprecedented content in videogames. In "Frenheit", players were capable of participating in a full blown sex scene, which was, for some reason, never censored by the publisher.
Following a rumor, it seems that Heavy Rain will be pushing even further: it is currently expected to be receiving an 18+ rating, which would seem to confirm the inclusion of some very mature content in the game.

The so-called "love scene" was apparently created with the use of motion capturing technology and the rumor explains that, apparently, Sony is pushing Quantic Dream to have the scene censored in order to sell to a larger userbase. Knowing David Cage, he will definitely be fighting to keep Heavy Rain in it's original form, possibly allowing players to switch the content on & off via an in-game option"

I hope that added some detail...

Maybe this title could be the pioneer and show that 18+ titles aren't destined to sell poorly. Why can't they just hang a beaded curtain over a crawl space at the local Gamestart? I'm so sick of violent video games getting more and more of a pass, while we still can't even hint at sexuality in games without all hell breaking loose. How old does the average gamer have to be for this to no longer be an issue? 128?
But now Heavy Rain is way more on my radar than before.

Quick, pretty literal, not proofread translation (on a side note, I want this game on my 360!):

Heavy Rain: the most mature game ever released facing censorship?

All Quantic Dream fans know how David Cage, the french team's leader, always tried to push himself forward in videogames, trying to introduce mature contents never tackled before by the industry. Already in Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy, Transl. Note) it was possible to assist (and actively partecipate through the analog sticks) to a sex scene without censorship which, we wonder how, was never censored.

According to a rumor, it seems that Heavyy Rain will go way further: at the moment it seems that the title has been classified with a ranking of "18 MINIMUM" (rating entity not mentioned, T.N.), which already shows the direction of the PS3-exclusive game. For what has been described as a "Love Scene", the full potential of Motion Capturing has been exploited, and it seems that Sony is already pressuring Quantic Dream on censoring some contents considered too risquée, to be able to market [the game] to a bigger chunk of its userbase. Knowing David Cage's personality, we are really sure that he'll fight to a long extent to keep Heavy Rain in its original version, possibly managing [mature/adultt] content through an internal control in the game.
How will this story end? Will Sony or Quantic Dream prevail? The bets are open!

In all honesty, this game was supposed to be a more mature, adult endeavor. Naturally, it will have situations that are considered adult in theme. To screw around with that simply to broaden it's appeal, sickens me. And from everything I've heard from the folks at Quantic Dream, they're not about to censor their own game, simply to shift a few extra units.

Screw kids, go play LBP, or Hot Shots Golf. This is the adult table.

Perhaps the People at QD should give Kevin Smith a call. He's the most successful director in history for going against the ratings board (I understand it is a different medium) and a little sit down with David Cage at least to give him a few pointers!

@mornelith

Precisely. It's pretty much the same thing going on in China, only they ban the show of violence in order to keep their population unaware of their own (while letting them continue to sink there time into nothing). Busy hands in idle acts are easily manipulated populace.

And parents thinking the game is safer just cause "sex" is censored is an easy sell to more consumers. Pseudo-morals are disgusting. Either drop morals and be clear on it, or adopt them and understand them.

Censorship sucks.

Just add an option for the player to turn if off, (like games do for blood and violence) and ,boom, the game won't need to be censored or the scene removed.

I don't think the scene will be integral to the story, unless Cage somehow factored an important plot element while two people are getting it on, I don't see how adding the option I mentioned above would negate the validity of the story at all. From what I have seen of the game, I doubt a sex scene will be needed to continue the story, certainly to illustrate the plot better, or better show a character, but it probably won't have a significant impact on the game or the story.

Again, this is all speculation, but I don't see anything to think otherwise.

Adding the option will make all parties involved happy, let the people who want it, have it, and the people who don't, need not worry because they can take it out. Cage and Quantic dream do not have to go to war for this, a little more work will allow them to bypass (mostly) silly censorship laws and allow then to retain what they what the player to see, and feel.

@ Rockvillian - What's so sad is that only the most gruesome of violence is censored...and not even in the US. Manhunt, War games, all of it. No sex, a natural act is taboo...but yeah, spill as much blood as you want. And people wonder why America is so prone to aggression. Want to see something ridiculous, check out 'This Film is Not yet Rated' absolutely frightening glimpse into the MPAA.

Now maybe the sex scenes will look, ya know, sexy. Not like two Barbie dolls humping like in Indigo.

Isn't this the same Sony that was just erecently saying how it was they who made gaming mainstream. Yet now, instead of pushing the idea of gaming as a medium that is capable of mature storytelling aimed at a more adult market, they are telling developers to cut stuff? Great job.

To be honest though, this kind of thing happens in movieland all the time so it isn't that outrageous.

Mornelithe and Timmeh hit the nail on the head.

This game's "adult content" depends completely on the way they implement it. If it is truly a mature (in the definition of well-carried, understandable, and respectable), then it needs to be allowed to stay, for the sake of the game industry's future. Video games will never escape the toy moniker and reach "art" unless these proper boundaries are pushed.

Damn Sony for even thinking of suppressing this if it's well-handled, because they damned sure didn't step in for God of War's sex scenes that were completely immature and did nothing to improve the medium.

I'll be honest about this, I don't care either way as long as the game is released sooner than later.

Honestly though, It's a mature game in every sense of the word. I'm sure they found a way to handle the sex scene tastefully(or at least, in a way that helps enrich the story).

I can't help but wonder how the people used in the motion capturing must have felt though. Did they have to wear special suits that accommodated...certain...parts? Honestly, why aren't we talking about this stuff instead?
