Rumor: Microsoft working on Kinect drivers, SDK for PC photo

The last official word on when Microsoft will support Kinect for Windows came from CEO Steve Ballmer at CES 2011 when he said "in the right time." While it's not that time quite yet, recent rumors suggest it may not be far off.

WinRumors reports via unnamed sources that Microsoft is readying driver support and an SDK "in the coming months and will allow third-party developers to create titles that utilize the Kinect sensor when plugged into a PC."

The site also heard that XNA Game Studio may be involved as well. One step closer to Xbox LIVE Indie games being allowed to use Kinect, maybe. I am excited for -- and incredibly afraid of -- that day, should it ever occur.

I would love Kinect to come to PC. I just don't believe Microsoft will ever do it with an acceptable level of quality. Unlike gaming, where Microsoft was forced to come out with Kinect due to the audience, Microsoft tends to do a very poor job with innovation on it's PCs. Due to Microsoft's history, Kinect PC functionality is vaporware until proven otherwise.

Didn't they already say they were gonna release it? I fail to see the news here...

At least they seem slightly aware of the fact that this technology was designed for the PC.

Cool and all, but isn't it nullified by the fact that PrimeSense, the creators of the damn thing already provided open source drivers for it? Or am I missing the big picture here?

Xbox Indie Games developers need Kinect tools dammit. Though we would have to parade through 30 crap games for 1 good one, I sense some gems coming out with some good use of the tech (Ska Studios)

@TsarIV, PrimeSense already has the drivers, it was just a matter of how much money we're they going to charge MS to stick their name on it.

Hey, now they can have zero worthwhile games on the PC, as well as the 360.

I finally tried Kinect the other day, and I truly believe it is NOT a viable gaming controller. Hopefully on the PC, we'll see some of the awesome homebrew that's already been made get even better.

@darckcloud723

isnt thats what MS is selling the 360 as now? a super cool fun time media center machine you control with only your body as the controller, that plays games if you want?

cant wait to jump up to change the channel up and duck to change the channel down. left/right for volume up/down. hold up fingers for the channel number you want. then punch at the screen for enter.
