Rumor: Medal of Honor going 'modern combat'? photo

It's like Electronic Arts is in the Stone Age with their Medal of Honor games and its World War II setting. It's been two years since Infinity Ward updated their game with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Hell, they're about to release the sequel soon.

Well, if a LinkedIn profile of a former EA Los Angeles production intern is to be believed, there's a Medal of Honor game with a more modern setting in the works. In fact, Micah Lapping-Carr -- who is now working with Microsoft on its Project Natal -- uses the exact words "modern combat" when referencing his work, which ran a short three months in 2008.

We've heard rumblings of a new Medal of Honor in a modern setting for awhile now, based around the 2002 "Operation Anaconda." Considering the relative popularity of the series, it's not too surprising. The move to "modern combat" could be interesting, and we're curious to see (if this pans out) how the take is different than Infinity Ward's.

Of course, Lapping-Carr could have been born in the 1930s, and "modern combat" may have a different meaning to him. Or not.

I can't say this totally surprises me, Metal of Honor has been all but forgotten since Battlefield and Call of Duty stepped it up to the Modern stuff. I mean, for World at War they had to put in zombie Nazis to get that thing to sell. WW2 is old hat and has been for a long time.

Maybe Ghost Recond Advanced Warfighter will pull it back to just "regular" warfighter, they're a little too advanced for the new modern combat craze.

I'd hate to see Medal of Honor get on the Modern War train, but if they can create a unique situation with a cast of characters and make it work, more power to them.

Maybe if they actually put a bit more effort to FPS gameplay in general then just quirks, maybe they wouldn't be getting such negative feedback.

To be honest, MOH isn't MOH w/o WW2 ...come on, can't they focus on the more interesting aspects of the war, like spec ops operation, the Italian theater, or just something awesome that isn't heard much from the history books? As much as WW2 been done, there's still plenty more to look up upon.

I'd rather have a Medal of Honor: Vietnam, but modern combat will do too.

I thought MoH died? Anyways I hate the idea of them going Modern since CoD is doing well with it. If they wanna be on top then they should make MoH: Vietnam featuring Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump.

DarkMagic56 has is right. MoH shouldn't follow suit with the modern warfare stuff, but should rather go to a time period that hasn't been covered.

I'm still down for a WWI shooter if anyone will make it. Trenches and vast open plains would make quite a game I feel.

Just as long as we never, ever, go back to the American Civil War. If only in RTS games.

i want future fictional war games. im tired of this era. i want gijoe type laser guns mixed with some older bullet tech. like what is being normal now.
with robots that still need to be controlled by humans not smart robots.. but done in a good way with classes like killzone2. mixed with rb6v/cod weapon/char customization etc.
no aliens. this is a normal future earth war type thing.
isnt MAG set somewhat in the future? but no lasers i guess?

what's retarded is that there are tons of wars to choose from in the last century and they do either WWII or modern.

How about modern with a twist - special ops police in mexican drug war. falklands. africa. turkey- cyprus.

Oh wait of course we wouldn't buy that 'cos we have to be playing an american when we pretend to shoot people. Cos then it's ok.

I could give a shit which era MoH decides to base their next game in, all I want is for them to step it up. They revolutionized the World War 2 fps, making way for CoD and Battlefield, and I still hold the original and Allied Assault in high regard. Make something great EA, make it great and remind me of the good ol' days!

Why bother? This is only going to make you come off as a "me too" kind of developer. Maybe you should just let the franchise rest for awhile, and wait until the other dimwits run out of steam (and that's not a clever jab at Valve, the one company who can't and won't run out of Steam).

But will you do that? Nope. You'll just make a "Modern Warfare" and keep it rated "T" so parents with questionable moral fiber will pick the game up for their kids since it's patriotic and doesn't show blood, never mind their child shooting another human being. It's asinine.

How can it be modern when modern is always now?

I also would like to see a futuristic human-versus-human war, by the way.

EA is very good in taking a famous gaming-concept and then doing their own thing...I am very optimistic...

Maybe all WW2 shooters are going to start taking this route. That would be interesting. I have a feeling I'll be content with just a copy of MW2, though.

Ugh, I hope they don't go modern. Modern warfare is going to become the new WW2. :P I'm already sick of fighting in the various desert -stan countries, though it's fun to fight in Russia or China or something. I have no problem with tons of WW2 games, I don't have to play any of them if I don't want to, and a well-done WW2 game is always welcome. I try to look past the setting and at the game itself, *everything* has been done over and over at this point, it's all just a matter of personal taste.

Eh, if they did do it they would have make it really unique to steal some sales away from the machine that is MW. I don't think they should do it, instead they should go to Vietnam, as we have seen games based on that war, but none done on the level of something like a CoD4 type of single player experience. If they could match the intensity and "Oh shit!" moments of that game, then CoD might have some competition again.

I mean, multi player is important too, but I think they need to start at the single player level in order to get MoH back on the radar.

Bwahahaha... MOH is so 1998. And I agree with the people calling "me too." This is exactly what Guitar Hero did and, in my opinion, it has sucked ever since. It lost its identity.

However, it sells plenty, so I could see the giddy excitement of the Suits.
