Rumor: Leaked images show updated Xbox 360 dashboard photo

Project Natal gets an official name in Kinect, the Xbox 360 gets a re-branding refresh. What's next, an updated look for the Xbox 360 dashboard?

If images leaked by the French site Logic Sunrise are legit, we'll be seeing some minor tweaks when with a dashboard refresh than may make an appearance when Kinect ships later this year. The images show what a streamlined dashboard that doesn't look that different than what we have now, save for a new color scheme, harder edges, and a better use of space.

The images also show a "Natal Setup" screen, which indicates that the images may be dated; it's possible that these may be early concept designs for a dashboard that could see even more changes.

At E3 this year, we did see a similar dashboard look during some demos, both on the floor and behind-closed-doors. Personally, I like the new look and color scheme. It has a tighter, cleaner feel.

If these images are legit, why would Kinect still be called Natal? I guess its just a placeholder.

why would they get rid of the the sort of 3d menus and make them just flat? thats really boring.

This is what the NXE should have been from the start. It's way too congested, slow and non-streamlined as it is. This will be a welcome update

@covah

I agree. I loved the 3D style of the other dashboard.

Meh, looks pretty similar. I don't really have a problem with the current dashboard.

I would hate it if they went the total XMB route. The OS is the weakest part of the PS3. It's sterile and the organization is horrible.

How is that a update? It looks very similar to what we already have now, but just a bit more simplistic and basic looking. In fact I think it looks worst. Why is the gamertag thing in the upper right side corner just a persons name? So are they totally doing away with gamerpics now? This just might be a early prototype, but in my opinion its a step backwards, not a update!

USB is limited by the USB speed anyway, i doubt there's much more they can do to improve the speed.

Looks like the interface is adopting Microsoft's "Metro" UI theme, which is what they're using for things like the Zune and Windows Phone 7, and evidently use for some parts of the Windows 7 OS. You can tell based on the hard corners for the menus, especially shown by the new guide button "pop-up" menu no longer having rounded and layered "blades". Also, things like the "A" button markers no longer appear rounded, like the actual button, but look like a flat, green circle with the letter "A" in it. There are also no drop shadows on the menus.

I think it looks nice, though I do like the current setup which makes things look like they're heading out into the distance.

Either way, yeah, this doesn't look drastically different, but I agree that it's sort of looking more XMB-esque.

How about bring me to the "My Xbox" screen as the first thing I see when I log into Live and not a list of ads...oh, I mean the "Spotlight" section

I like the new look, it's nice to keep things fresh. Was getting sick of the NXE dash and if this is part of the rumored fall update(or any update) this is most definitely a welcome addition. Especially if it makes the menus a lot faster!

Oh and I didn't know XMB had a copyright on Vertical List menu's with Horizontal submenu's, live and learn. (idiots)

i like it better. cleans it up, less cartoony. but it does look a lot like the "Windows Media Center" or whatever it's called....

i think they are just trying to make all their UI (phones, computers, game systems) have a similar look and feel.

I really like it. I just hope it's smooth and responds quickly. Maybe it's just my xbox but the NXE dash can e pretty sluggish at times.

Also: new look and sounds for achievement/message pop ups please.

Meh. Here comes the new dashboard, pretty much the same as the old dash board. No big deal. If only their store fronts were set up more like the PSN store. Sony has Microsoft beat there big time. I'd have to agree that this is beginning to look more like the Cross Media Stack, so maybe there is hope.

"I wish we could go back to the original design as an option for the update."

That or be able to remove things we don't use. If I could reduce it to just games, friends and game marketplace (which is all I use) it might speed the thing up so it'd actually be useful for once. NXE was a horrible update, everything has been slow as hell since that. It would also be nice if they could speed up reading your XBLA titles so I wouldn't have to wait 30-45 seconds to be able to access that window. Getting rid of avatars on the friends list until you actually select that person would speed things up too.

Also what nanowerx said.

So will all my themes be rendered useless again? I don't like this new dash, I just started liking it the way it was, and they're already changing it again? So will my themes still work the same now? Because last time they changed it...

Plus there's too much dead space now, and nothing is aligned properly. It just doesn't flow well, my eyes are all over the place and it just feels clumsily designed.

@Corduroy Turtle: Or you could, oh, I dunno, not click on the ad? They aren't playing over anything and sometimes they're even contests to win free MSP(which I've won, woot)so just ignore the tiny little window stuck between the other non-Ad windows. Kay? /gently pats you

@nanowerx: Spotlight is amazing what are you talking about? That's where they put up vids on Unlocking tough achievements, new game content/previews and developer interviews. Good stuff! You want to lose the whole thing just because one of the many windows is an ad? o_O

Awesome revamp. I hope they rework it to make it even better than this screen shot. The current dashboard is a pain in the ass, its nice an all but has a few design issues and its functionality can be questionable at times. I hope the next iteration of the dashboard is way better and tightly designed.

Most likely this is real because the gamertag in the photo looks like all the automated gamertags given from x360 dev/testkits. so im gonna say this is most likely real.

Still difficult and confusing to navigate.

I wonder why they don't go for a grid like a PC desktop or a Wii. Or at least a system that shows you all the sub-info at the same time, like most PC's use.

I appear to be one of the few who actually likes the Spotlight Channel... I think it is a great way to promote new arcade titles, DLC, and events. Honestly, I turn my Xbox on just to see whats up sometimes. I agree that the ads aren't very palatable, but they don't bother me really. I just scroll by them. I think it would be a great idea if one could delete the different channels that aren't necessary to streamline the experience. This supposed update looks worse than what we have now though.

It really needs updating. They'll probably add those features of Destination Arcade. I'm tired of sifting through themes, avatar items, trailers, and whatever else to find DLC for games.

Microsoft is the worst offender at arbitrary organization, no matter what they do, they won't allow it to 'make sense'.

The blades UI was brilliant. It was quick, you could get to where you wanted to be fast, and it could really be made to look different with themes. My hate of the NXE is seriously to the point that I play my Xbox less since it came out. I know avatars wouldn't have integrated with blades, but, avatars really haven't been applied well at all. They should've come up with some sort of Home app like Sony did, really.

If they really are changing the dashboard again they need to stop sending you back to the "what's new" menu every time you exit a game or start up the system. I NEVER want to see that menu and yet it's the first thing I see every time I do anything on the 360. The whole dashboard is poorly laid out crap but it's probably expecting too much of Microsoft to hope that they could design an interface that is anything more than minimally serviceable.

Considering the link now goes to a cease and desist letter (in english) from Microsoft saying that the site is infringing copyrights by posting the image of "Xbox: Berlin Dashboard" I'm going to have to say this rumor looks fairly true.

Guess we'll have to see.

The NXE lacks speed and has redundancy in spades. I've had to reenter my Redeem Code codes so many times because I entered them in the Activate Code section, my fucking Game Library takes so long to load I don't even open it anymore (haven't beaten BC:Rearmed yet!), and the number of panels I don't need and can't skip past with any sense of predictability makes me cringe (the shoulder buttons skip three? panels). Besides, the low definition greyish blue and green color scheme is throwing off my whole sexy HD thing I've got going in the living room.

Why is it so hard to design a GUI? Maybe Microsoft should steal one again.
