I would hate it if they went the total XMB route. The OS is the weakest part of the PS3. It's sterile and the organization is horrible.
USB is limited by the USB speed anyway, i doubt there's much more they can do to improve the speed.
music
video
pictures
social
radio
podcasts
marketplace
games

i would say just do that, but people are going to complain they cant find anything.
I think it looks nice, though I do like the current setup which makes things look like they're heading out into the distance.
Either way, yeah, this doesn't look drastically different, but I agree that it's sort of looking more XMB-esque.
Oh and I didn't know XMB had a copyright on Vertical List menu's with Horizontal submenu's, live and learn. (idiots)
i think they are just trying to make all their UI (phones, computers, game systems) have a similar look and feel.
Also: new look and sounds for achievement/message pop ups please.
That or be able to remove things we don't use. If I could reduce it to just games, friends and game marketplace (which is all I use) it might speed the thing up so it'd actually be useful for once. NXE was a horrible update, everything has been slow as hell since that. It would also be nice if they could speed up reading your XBLA titles so I wouldn't have to wait 30-45 seconds to be able to access that window. Getting rid of avatars on the friends list until you actually select that person would speed things up too.
Also what nanowerx said.
Plus there's too much dead space now, and nothing is aligned properly. It just doesn't flow well, my eyes are all over the place and it just feels clumsily designed.
@nanowerx: Spotlight is amazing what are you talking about? That's where they put up vids on Unlocking tough achievements, new game content/previews and developer interviews. Good stuff! You want to lose the whole thing just because one of the many windows is an ad? o_O
I wonder why they don't go for a grid like a PC desktop or a Wii. Or at least a system that shows you all the sub-info at the same time, like most PC's use.
Guess we'll have to see.
Why is it so hard to design a GUI? Maybe Microsoft should steal one again.
