Rumor: IWNet giving Modern Warfare 2 players viruses photo

The ghost of dedicated servers continues to haunt Modern Warfare 2, as the flawless IWNet has been apparently struck down with a Trojan virus. Infinity Ward's replacement for dedicated servers has allegedly been hacked by a nefarious MW2 clan who are using a mixture of DLL files and guest clients' open ports in order to spread the Trojan to those who log into IWNEt and play the game.

There is a chance that it's simply an Antivirus program picking up something benign. Tech savvy gamers are trying to find the root of the issue, but there is a fear spreading, and people are warned to be careful when playing Modern Warfare 2 on a PC.

Real or not, this is not something Infinity Ward will live down easily. After promoting IWNEt as a better alternative to PC gamers' beloved dedicated servers, the last thing IW needs is a Trojan infesting the service. Still, that's what happens when you spring a whole new service on people a month before a game's launch. While I may not fully support all the complaints and boycotting over MW2, I can certainly agree that this is very shoddy stuff indeed.

There is a lot of egg on the faces of Infinity Ward spokesmen today, methinks.

[Thanks, xdarkxwarriorx]

IW should just say fuck it and stop supporting MW2 for PC. That way whiny PC fanboys can claim a victory and IW can move on. It's not like they're making money off of a "community" of pirates anyway.

Hurray! Hackers: 2 IW.net: 0

First PC gamers get a hold of teh dveloper kit and now there's an apparent Trojan virus on the loose in its inner workings. Great job, IW.net. Your supposed Alcatraz of a gaming service has been obliterated in less than a week and a half...

Seriously, enough with the PC shit. Butthurt idiots keep ruining the experience for those who just want to play the game. Let the hackers ruin the game so I don't have to hear the phrase 'dedicated server' or 'IW Net' ever again.

So now, by spreading viruses and attacking IW's matchmaking platform, idiots trying to gain 'revenge' against a video game have further contributed to the death of PC gaming...won't be long now until developers say "screw you PC! We are going where the $$$ is!" (i.e. console DLC)

@Zeta: I read it again. Still doesn't make sense. I could swear that it's not me that give gamers a bad name, but instead the thieves who have the gall to start a petition about an omitted feature in a game they're going to pirate anyway, and then, when scorned, hack the service that legitimate paying customers use.

man that sux... glad I got it for my 360 :-)

I would've gotten the PC-version normally but since they didn't have dedicated servers I didn't see why I would get the PC-version, as I can play on non-dedicated-servers on my 360 as well :p

now I'm glad...

Sure hope it's not as bad as it sounds!

85% of online users were pirates, for a relatively small title. Extrapolate this for a major title like MW2.

@Phantom Spaceman: 360 version of MW2 was the first one to get pirated tho.

What did IW/Activision expect tbh? We've had dedicated server support in FPS games sine the 90's. No wonder we're revolting when we get the secondclass citizen stamp pressed on our forehead. Premium price for a subpar service. It's the worst thing ever tbh...

This business decision on the part of IW is gonna cost them dearly down the road. It's obvious to some gamers now that IW doesn't care about them, but only about their revenue, and that's gonna tarnish their reputation down the road. There were passionate fans for the first Modern Warfare, but now IW has taken the wind out of that passion. Passionate fans will buy your game on launch day. Jaded fans will not. They'll buy it used, or not buy it at all.

These PC gamers aren't "butthurt," they're customers that have been shit on by IW and Activision, and as customers they have every right to bitch about this. And only a company run by a fool would ignore their customers complaints. If Activison continues to operate in this way, people will stop buying their games altogether, whether there's an alternative or not.

Phantom Spaceman is correct on this(although rather caustic and immature in his delivery). Its not uncommon to see around a 90% piracy rate on the PC; if memory serves, MW1 had something around 60-70% piracy.

I'll just add that removing dedicated servers didn't solve the piracy issue at all, as a few days after realease there was a way for pirates to play on IW.net. The only thing the removal accomplished was scaring off competitive players who will stand by MW1 or move towards the new BF.

Bitch? yes. Be incredible douchebags that ruin the fun for those that want to play the game anyway since they don't care about dedicated servers? No.

I was a PC Gamer for many, many years so I understand hacking servers and ruining other people's good time to stick it to "the man" is nothing new. However, PC Gamers always wonder why they get a bad rap.

There's till money to be made on the PC otherwise we wouldn't see any games coming out on it anymore. What we are seeing is that it's becoming less viable to produce games only for the PC, which is why we see so many cross platform releases. Developers won't abandon the PC until the ROI of projects goes low enough to no longer justify development.

You fail sir. http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2009/11/cheap-to-good-home-used-360-pirated-games-slightly-banned.ars?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rss

So over 1 million Xboxs were banned, but the pirates are PC users, but no one bought the PC version anyway according to you.
You contradict yourself, and just make yourself look like an uninformed tool. Console elitism, is at best amusing, and at worst you ( http://www.liberalities.com/pics/Elitism.PNG ).
Not that you seem old enough to know, but way back in October 29, 2003 , a game called Call Of Duty came out for Mac and PC. IW got it's start on PC. You think they would have even gotten to the point of making MW1 let alone MW2 if " 85% " of PC's were " pirates " .
Keep trying though, next time you might not fail so hard.

What a certain part of the community are trying to do is prove a point, and they've done so successfully. IWnet doesn't provide enough advantages over dedicated servers, yet they will try to make the shoe fit so they can gorge more money out of their customer further down the line. The whole situation plain sucks.

@JamOnTheOne; This isn't bitching PC gamers, it's a horribly insecure service. This isn't any sort of well-meaning protest, this is just people exploiting a system that doesn't work.

Yes, the perpetrators are PC gamers, but they're not doing it for PC gamers, they're doing it for themselves. PC gamers in general have a lot to answer for - but this isn't one of it.
