According to mystery sources, Infinity Ward is not interested in making Modern Warfare 3, at least right now. The next project from Activision's golden boys will apparently be something "completely new." You can, of course, color us intrigued.
Where this leaves Modern Warfare 3 is unclear right now. It's obvious that Activision will want a follow-up in 2011, but if Infinity Ward's not behind it, then who is? There were rumors a while back that a third studio was going to be brought into the Call of Duty franchise. Perhaps they'll be taking over Modern Warfare while Infinity Ward does something else.
Whatever it is, this will be very interesting to see pan out. I'd love to see what else Infinity Ward is capable of, although I wonder how well Modern Warfare would do in the hands of another. I guess we'll just have to wait and see, eh?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
There's a lot of highly talented studios out there that are more than capable of working on this series. And with the groundwork already set, the series could flourish even more with fresh devs behind it.
I'm not about to say that no one can be better than IW. But for the sake of continuity and, for that matter, a necessity to match the efforts and quality of the first two games, only IW should be touching on this current CoD plotline.
Just imagine Treyarch making MW3. Hold that thought for a moment. Hold it a little longer. Now stop. Yeah, that grimace on your face is right on the mark. Its not worth the risk to something that so far has been quite brilliant in execution thus far.
Hell, for that matter, does Activision really want to play in EA's hands with their Medal of Honor series modern reboot? If MW3 sucks, they will be handing their game right over to Medal of Honor reboot, assuming Medal of Honor is quite good, which it very well could be.
Future Warfare will play like the original Starsiege: TRIBES!
If its anything like Ghost Recon it should be awesome. I'd love to see what IW can do with the future.
I don't think in any universe Activision will let this cash cow go. See: Guitar Hero
Why the fuck do they keep tossing the CoD franchise around when you KNOW Infinity Ward does it best? I just don't get it.
They could even have a really shoddy online setup, feature no proper clan support and save most of the maps for paid for DLC.
I'm sure any developer could do it, and would love to have their name tied to a Modern Warfare title.
This also means no multiplayer on IWnet (happy dance).
"...when you KNOW Infinity Ward does it best?"
You don't know until every single game developer in existence has made a COD. Which will never happen so you'll never know. IW aren't driven by somesort of God you know. They're human, just like every other developer.
online sword to sword combat would be awesome.
Starring Captain Price, of course.
Blah. Blah. Blah.
"Just like Bungie won't be making another Halo."
Exactly what I was thinking.
Oh wait....
As far as the story goes, I love the plots of both MW1&2, they seemed believable. But Activision needs to cut this historical crap and stay current, or go futuristic.

As opposed to the plot of WAW, which was completely preposterous, right? :-) I don't think either MW had a realistic plot - usual jingoistic World Police rubbish. Ooh but turns out there's a baaad apple in the cart who corrupts some American soldiers, how edgy...

Seems like not many people agree, but in my opinion MW1>WAW>MW2 (not online - campaign only)
