Rumor: Infinity Ward won't be making Modern Warfare 3 photo

According to mystery sources, Infinity Ward is not interested in making Modern Warfare 3, at least right now. The next project from Activision's golden boys will apparently be something "completely new." You can, of course, color us intrigued.

Where this leaves Modern Warfare 3 is unclear right now. It's obvious that Activision will want a follow-up in 2011, but if Infinity Ward's not behind it, then who is? There were rumors a while back that a third studio was going to be brought into the Call of Duty franchise. Perhaps they'll be taking over Modern Warfare while Infinity Ward does something else.

Whatever it is, this will be very interesting to see pan out. I'd love to see what else Infinity Ward is capable of, although I wonder how well Modern Warfare would do in the hands of another. I guess we'll just have to wait and see, eh?

I'd love to see what they can do in a completely different genre. IW knows how to make good gameplay, I'd love to see if they could pull of an RTS or third person action game.

Also makes me wonder if the third person portions of MW2 were a little bit of an experiment...perhaps a hint at things to come?

IF this is true, I'm not as concerned as I thought I would be. IW helped create an awesome foundation for the FPS genre through the perks, and custom classes.

There's a lot of highly talented studios out there that are more than capable of working on this series. And with the groundwork already set, the series could flourish even more with fresh devs behind it.

Rather than milk the franchise to death I'd rather see IW leave Modern Warfare behind and work on something else. Leave Modern Warfare on a high note.

Great for IW since whatever they do will undoubtedly be quite good. However, this does not bode well for MW3 if Activision is impatient and hands it off to another development team.

I'm not about to say that no one can be better than IW. But for the sake of continuity and, for that matter, a necessity to match the efforts and quality of the first two games, only IW should be touching on this current CoD plotline.

Just imagine Treyarch making MW3. Hold that thought for a moment. Hold it a little longer. Now stop. Yeah, that grimace on your face is right on the mark. Its not worth the risk to something that so far has been quite brilliant in execution thus far.

Hell, for that matter, does Activision really want to play in EA's hands with their Medal of Honor series modern reboot? If MW3 sucks, they will be handing their game right over to Medal of Honor reboot, assuming Medal of Honor is quite good, which it very well could be.

Future Warfare? That might get me interested, as I haven't been since CoD2, the last one I played, modern just isn't quite enough to interest me. But a non-Warhammer40K-ripping-off future game could be interesting out of IW

Whatever IW makes, I hope it has the same quality gameplay, but with some sort of format that puts off about 80% of the MW players. goddamn all those people suck to play with.

Treyarch will still make non-modern CoD's and IW will move onto CoD: Future Weapons.

If its anything like Ghost Recon it should be awesome. I'd love to see what IW can do with the future.

They'll be making Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Future next. Treyarch will be picking up Modern Warfare 3 and releasing one a year going forward.

Looking forward to whatever they work on next. But for MW3? I can't see it done by anyone else, granted there are some great studios out there that could maybe take it over and do great things. I just want to see how the story pans out, I liked the campaign mode and I think the end was great, but a sequel would have to be quite epic, especially if they plan to top MW2.

Well i personally am not that shocked.. after the PC scandal for MW2... I dont think they should even have the right to make another COD. lets face it anyways. Treyarch didnt make THAT bad of a mess with Waw nazi zombies was pretty fun.

Why the fuck do they keep tossing the CoD franchise around when you KNOW Infinity Ward does it best? I just don't get it.

To be fair they don't need IW, they just take MW2, add a couple of killstreaks new guns and whack that Modern Warfare 3 title on it and it'll sell like hotcakes.

They could even have a really shoddy online setup, feature no proper clan support and save most of the maps for paid for DLC.

I'm sure any developer could do it, and would love to have their name tied to a Modern Warfare title.

IW made a phenomenal game, but they had some issues. Hopefully a new studio can reach the bar and maybe even raise it.

This also means no multiplayer on IWnet (happy dance).

"...when you KNOW Infinity Ward does it best?"

You don't know until every single game developer in existence has made a COD. Which will never happen so you'll never know. IW aren't driven by somesort of God you know. They're human, just like every other developer.

I dunno, I would file this in under BS. The way MW2 ended I really cant see a developer just giving the conclusion away to another developer. IW seems like a pretty passionate developer when it comes to there games Im sure they will make MW3 maybe after this "new IP" that they plan to release. I also dont think MW3 will be on next gen consoles, think of all the money Activision would be missing out on if it was on xbox 720 or ps4.

I think its cool that they're going to make a new game, because they're clearly talented developers. But it would be kind of cheap of them to not make MW3, because they left a bunch of loose ends on last years game.

well for me, this is almost a guarentee that i won't be buying another CoD game. Infinity Ward is the only developer that can do justice to it and make the game properly.

As far as the story goes, I love the plots of both MW1&2, they seemed believable. But Activision needs to cut this historical crap and stay current, or go futuristic.

As opposed to the plot of WAW, which was completely preposterous, right? :-) I don't think either MW had a realistic plot - usual jingoistic World Police rubbish. Ooh but turns out there's a baaad apple in the cart who corrupts some American soldiers, how edgy...

******************

Seems like not many people agree, but in my opinion MW1>WAW>MW2 (not online - campaign only)
