Rumor: Hulu on PS3 requires PlayStation Plus photo

It appears that, with the launch of PlayStation Plus, Sony may be taking a sh*t-stained leaf out of Microsoft's playbook. According to Hulu's website, the console-bound version of the TV streaming service will require a PS Plus subscription.

What this means, obviously, is that Hulu on the PS3 will cost you $49.99 per year as well as the required $9.99 a month. Microsoft has already confirmed that Hulu Plus will need an Xbox Live Gold subscription, but we expect that kind of "take features away rather than add cool features" mentality from Microsoft, not so much from Sony.

This is the kind of industry we've all helped make, though. Having to pay a subscription fee for the honor of paying another subscription fee strikes me as completely ludicrous, but we gamers have demonstrated to Sony and Microsoft just how tolerant we are of ludicrous behavior in the past, so don't expect things to change. You can, in fact, expect any cool new PS3 features to demand PS Plus access in the future. But hey, at least you'll get the free rental of an old PSOne Classic that nobody wants because it's crap!

Damn them for charging for optional extras that nobody is forcing me to buy and has nothing to do with actually playing games!

I pretty much expected this, I doubt PSN users will see much in the way of new features in the future unless they subscribe.

They still do have a decent free online service.

Everything in psn+ is optional. You dont need to pay $50 a year (technically 15 months) to play online, or get demos, or buy games.

You dont need a hulu subscription. Not when Hulu is free online, or you could just go to any number of streaming sites not realated to hulu.

I'm not sure what all the hubbub is about. I mean, I know the first month isnt all that super awesome, but its still only $50 a year, for added GOOD bonuses.

"you'll get the free rental of an old PSOne Classic that nobody wants because it's crap!"- could said it better my self. For all sensitive fangirls i repeat i am PS3 fan and only have PS3 but i am not blind fanboy. On papper you get value for your money when it comes to PSN plus but i already have Whipeout HD (2 year old game btw) and rest of crap like Minis and old PS1 game?! WHo gives a fuck!?! I predict Sony will next month give another old PSN game and fangirls will freak out how amazing it is. I already have Flower, Pixel Junk games, etc. Who cares about Minis and PS1 games that no one buys because they are to busy playing awesome current gen games.

I don't know if it's the perception thing, but XBL does seem more stable and able to do more than PSN. I have a feeling that Sony won't do anything to do with its subscribers though. It will just collect your money and put some restriction on your "owned" PS3 via so called firmware upgrade. I am going to stretch this to the limit: Sony is holding your PS3 hostage since the other OS drop incident. You don't own PS3 any more and all your digital assets will go away one day and Sony will say FFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!

HELL NO. You'll get to pay for it by paying for XBL.
----------------------

There's a big difference between paying for OPTIONAL features vs paying for ESSENTIAL features. Thing is, MS don't consider Online gaming essential - do you?

By paying for XBL the millions of Live subscribers have CREATED THIS SITUATION where it's become commonplace to charge a recurring fee for the use of "non-essential" services. If you pay for Live, this is YOUR FAULT.

Although this doesn't bother me at all because there is slim to no chance that Hulu will come to Europe anyhow.

It's all of the moronic Xbox fanboys that we have to thank for this. All of you idiots that have been paying Microsoft 50 bucks a year all for the privilege to play a game online that YOU PAID FOR. If you are paying 60 bucks or whatever for a game and online gameplay is listed on that packaging and doesn't require a subscription to play ala a MMO or something you SHOULD be able to play said game online without paying any fees to do so. Just one more reason the rest of us can and should hate xbox fanboys.

Eh, I screwed up on the "one time" thing for playon...they started charging a subscription fee of 20 bucks a year now after the first year is up. Still cheaper than other solutions, but no longer the great deal it used to be.

not much of a surprise since hulu will be available for subscription costs on ipod and ipad too. I think that the thing that a lot of the subscription models don't get is that if you are paying monthly cost on your rent+power+internet+phone then add say, xbl, play station+, netflix and start to add $10 here and $20 there- there is only so much subscription that one person can pay...

Not sure what you mean by the "take features away rather than add cool features mentality from Microsoft, not so much from Sony". Look at Sony hardware and software over the years (PS2,PS3,PSP,etc), they are the masters of releasing features and then taking them away later. I'm waiting to see what they remove next on their consoles.

This wouldn't be so bad if we saw sales on PSN+ subscriptions like we do on XBL gold year 'cards'. If/when psn+cards go on sale for 30ish, like xbox live, then we'll talk. But I don't pay the full 50 for Live, and I use it a lot more, so sony's going to have to make a better showing next month, or allow sales, or this may be dead in the water

It did mention hulu would remain free but that a new hulu would just carry complete seasons but the original only doing most recent.

That said I still don't plan to pay Sony a subscription ever because of fw 3.21 they really pissed me off heck I bought a 360 (already have a wii) because I Was so pissed for taking a feature I actualy used and used a lot. Assholes

besides those free games or discounts with plus aren't usable if you were to cancle or your membersip is up.

you are paying for a service. when you change your tires do you expect to not have to pay for the hours clocked and just the tires? GET A JOB AND GET THE FUCK OVER IT. maybe if you moved out of your moms basement you wouldn't have a problem with this stuff.

You get what you pay for. XBL is better BECAUSE YOU PAY FOR IT.

You have got to be mentally retarded if you think, " yea all those developers, IT guys, and servers should be free!" look at the whole picture jackasses. Office space, man hours, etc etc. Can you imagine how much that costs? It costs more to keep a game online then you will probably make in your lifetime, partly because you can't see more then 5 inches past your nose, most likely because you're just an idiot.

Just unfortunately noticing your asinine opinions more and more lately. Sadly, it appears as though you believe what you say, but I guess apparently even mentally disabled people need a blog to comment on. First one I noticed was how you're waiting for FFIV to illustrate how the 360 gimped the PS3 version of FFIII, and now it's that live gold members took our jobs. Cute.

Its funny PS fanboys crying over having to pay for something extra other than PSN+, but you know you don't have to get it. That is the whole thing that people shouldn't freak out about, it is your own choice, no one is making you buy this service! Also!

@xxtwelvefiftyone you are no better than the rest of us so STFU! It would be a miracle and a half if Sony deducted the money for Hulu from the PSN+ subscription fee and they wouldn't because then they would owe their customers money, now how stupid is it to think that a company looking to make money would put itself in such a position to where it would owe its customers money?

The idea of blaming Microsoft for "inventing" the practice of charging-for-a-service-when-you-can-get-a-similar-service-for-free-elsewhere is about as ridiculous as blaming a cable company for making you pay to watch HBO when you can get CBS for free over an antenna.

When Live first came on the scene, the only other option was the bare-bones (at the time) "Playstation Network" (or whatever you choose to call the PS2's limited online capabilities back in 2002), which wasn't even comparable. So yeah, Live used to cost and still costs money and I wish it didn't, but if it weren't for Microsoft's influence over the last eight years, online play over home consoles simply wouldn't be what it is today.

Maybe you should "blame" them for that, too.

There's way more reasons to hate microsoft than them charging a fee to play online. Same type of exclusives over and over again. Out dated hardware and software. Lack of blu ray disc which would make all games look like ps3 exclusives. Trying to monopolize the gaming indistry, utterly pathetic. And brain washing u fools to buy 5 xboxs because they break all the time. Waste of money.

Your reasons are full of fail:

Outdated hardware and software: Is that why Bayonetta runs so well on PS3? Oh...wait...it doesn't. And here we are 4 years into the ps3 life cycle and Sony is STILL adding features that the 360 had on day 1 and they don't even have them all yet.

Lack of Blu ray: Who cares? I have yet to see a ps3 game that looks better than Gears of War and digital download is the way of the future; MS was way ahead of the game on this one. Blu ray was/is an unnecessary and ultimately useless physical media that was obsolete before it even hit the market.

Monopolize the game industry: How exactly?

Brain washing "fools" to buy 5 xboxes: Yes, anyone that bought 5 xboxes is indeed a fool since the console is repaired for free ($ony charges over $100 to fix a ps3). There is no need to buy even one extra xbox.

The only thing MS has done since entering the gaming space is innovate the shit out of it. Without MS, gaming today would be about 10 years behind where it currently is.

Gaiden: what the hell are you talking about?

What part of NOTHING WILL BE TAKEN AWAY FROM VANILLA PSN do you not understand?

PSN+ is just added features and bonuses if you want to pay for them. Its not like microsoft forcing you to pay if you want to play online, and then trickling in little extra free features to make it look like its worth the money.

Outdated hardware and software: Is that why Bayonetta runs so well on PS3? Oh...wait...it doesn't.

Bayonetta was patched... and it was ported over by sega. Its not the hardware, its the developer... In this day and age, do I even really need to remind you?

And here we are 4 years into the ps3 life cycle and Sony is STILL adding features that the 360 had on day 1 and they don't even have them all yet.

Like paying a subscription fee of $40+ a year to be able to use my game to the fullest and still be bombarded with ads on every screen... like those features?

But I will give you cross game chat.

Except its not. Blurays can hold much more information on a disc than standard dvd's. Audio can run uncompressed. The only downside to bluray is the long loading times, but if you cant wait another 30seconds, maybe you should be doing somthing else. Digital Distribution isnt the way of the future... but your reasoning is still odd, because sony offers dd on a lot of content.

Monopolize the game industry: How exactly?

By banning 3rd party everythings. Memory Cards, Blue tooth headsets, proprietary HDD which cost literally 150% more than they should. Just recently they added USB HDD support, but only up to 32gb.

Brain washing "fools" to buy 5 xboxes: Yes, anyone that bought 5 xboxes is indeed a fool since the console is repaired for free ($ony charges over $100 to fix a ps3). There is no need to buy even one extra xbox.

Um... the 360 console has a 60+% failure rate. They do offer the 3 year on 3RROD ONLY. Everything else is a year. To put it into perspective, my Atari 2600 from 1978 still works, yet my xbox360 has broke 3 times already in the 3 years I have had it. The failure rate on the PS3 is about 12%. Still high, but not 60% high. So if your xbox blows after your year (which seems to happen) you will indeed have to chuck $100-$150 to get it fixed.

But you must be part of the new mindset that actually thinks having a warranty that you have to use is a good thing.

The only thing MS has done since entering the gaming space is innovate the shit out of it. Without MS, gaming today would be about 10 years behind where it currently is.

I'm not sure what your problem is... maybe its the blind fanboyism or lack of proper research, but you need to sit back and relax before you take your buddies incorrect ramblings as fact.

And by the way, I have all 3 current gen systems, play them all regularly, and still feel that microsoft is screwing the pooch.
