I'm, sorry, but this post couldn't be more wrong.
My cousin has an uncle who has a girlfriend who has a nephew who works at Valve, and he assured me that HL3 is coming in 2014 and it will be a multiplayer only, free-to-play JRPG.

Dunno how trolling that is. But that would imply Valve would have to finally be using a truly new version of Source that isn't using a mapping system from the 90's. So that's something.
And if nothing else, I actually do hope HL3 deviates from the whole linear cinematic FPS thing if they do make it. I just don't see how it could be anything that brings something really fresh or new, if it was just another iteration on 1 and 2.
It'll be an open world RTS with heavy roguelike elements. It'll also feature cameos and crossovers to create a unified Valve world with TF2 and Portal. The final boss will be Heavy riding an inflatable GLaDOS.

The way Episode 2 ends makes it impossible for Episode 3/HL3 to be Open-World. It's gonna be a regular-ass linear shooter, because that's easier to polish.
Doesn't mean Valve ain't gonna throw their hat in the open-world ring, but it might be a new IP or franchise, or maybe a Half-Life spinoff.

How... how would that even work from a story perspective?
I mean you can tell a story in that manner but from a gameplay perspective it doesn't jive with Half-Life's characters or general flow.
Scientist: "Doctah Freeman, I will pay you 13 Combine Rations if you deposit 2 soda cans into this trash can."
"Freeman, I need you to solve this seesaw puzzle with concrete blocks."
"A bunch of headcrabs have infested my basement, I will pay you in grenades."

I dunno, this made the needle on the bullshit meter jump up a bit. But it did get me thinking, I wonder what Half Life 3 will have to do in order to not make it feel 'more of the same'
I'm all for this. Every time I play HL2, I can't help but feel like I'm making too much progress, you know? Like, why should I spend an hour progressing the story when I could spend all day looting ruins and not finding one item worth using?
That's why Skyrim will always be a better game than any of the Half Life games. It gives you this whole wondrous world to loot, and you don't even realize that most of the items are completely useless! Spend 50 hours looting, only to realize that the badass shit you just made at the forge is better than everything in the game because 99% of the "unique" items in the game are only the same old shit with the same tweaked parameters you're capable of tweaking much better very early on.
Versus an 8 hour game with all that substantial progression, I'll take my hundred-hour slog, thank you. That's called getting your money's worth, which is based on a concrete scale of real maths that can't be disputed by anyone.

A metroidy open world would work for HL3, like unlocking areas by solving puzzles with gadgets you gradually collect through the game (portal gun!). I can't see "quests" in Half Life...
That would be tight as long as it keeps the same atmosphere. I can see a city acting as a hub with paths leading out of the city acting as levels. If they change too much and it doesn't feel or even look like Half-Life anymore, I have a feeling those super nerds are going to start all sorts of boycotts and shit. As a big enough fan to have a Half-Life tattoo, I'd love it if it went open world.

This is BLATANTLY utter rubbish rumour mongering to get die hard fans all riled up, I just cannot see why Valve would deviate from a winning formula or even possibly alienate existing fans of the series.

Comparing Skyrim to Half-Life as though the latter should somehow aspire to be an open world, broken, buggy mess of a game is just plain dumb.
It's a linear shooter, it is what it is and some of us enjoy it all the more for it.

Anyone remember how TeamFortress 2 looked when it was a military shooter, before it became the hat-filled, fun game it is now¿ This may be true at a design phase.

It wouldn't affect me because I don't like Half life either way, but that sounds horrible. Not everything needs to be open world, focused and finely crafted experiences can be good too, but no, people keep begging for the illusion of freedom, even though that basically means you are forced to spend 20 minutes driving from point a to b in a car.

My expectations off Half Life 3 are extremely high, it has to be one of the best singleplayer fps's ever made, as where the previous two games at the time and half life 2 still pretty much is one of the best. anything less than that will be a disappointment.

the open world thing makes sense. they hired Clint Hawking (of Far Cry 2 fame)and some guy who worked on deus ex and system shock, so they have been staffing in that direction for a while.

Valve mentioned years ago that their episodic approach to game development and delivery was a notable failure so at this point, I'd expect Half-Life 3.

As long as the story is great and the gameplay is awesome then I will but it. Valve has done very little wrong in my book and I trust them with their property.
