Rumor: Grand Theft Auto IV is in NYC

Rumor: Grand Theft Auto IV is in NYC photo
     Rumortoid

We keep running into this rumor about the next Grand Theft Auto 4 taking place in New York City, so I thought I'd pass it on here through the rumormill and put more brains on the task. Please take this as completely unconfirmed news until we can dig up more information.  Here's what we think we know:

  • The new GTA would play in New York City, in the early 90's
  • The story is based on the Russian Mafia vs. the Italian Mafia
  • Protagonist is an American-Italian working his way up the family

Conflicting rumors place the game back in California, primarily due to this fake mockup that was circulating earlier this year. The Big Apple as a grand next-gen  debut does have allure, but I'm mostly skeptical because they covered so much of NYC & New Jersey with Grand Theft Auto 3 ... but it wasn't necessarily Manhattan per se. Think this holds weight? Check out the rumor spreading references below and draw your own conclusions. PS: Only one of them is in English with typos a blazing :)

Meh, Liberty City = New York, why settle for a real world city when a fictional one gives you so much more freedom?

I could of sworn I read rumours previously placing it in Chicago. Must be my imagination. Japan would be cool.

i hope they will think of something new and original. they have already done new york and the early 90s. swinging london would be great like gta 1 or 2 add on.
and my guess is the next protagonist will be a woman

Yeah, I don't believe this, 'cause Liberty City IS New York City, just like Vice City is Miami, Los Santos is Los Angeles, San Fierro is San Francisco, and Las Venturas is Las Vegas. I wouldn't rule out it taking place in Liberty City again (didn't GTA 1 and 2 take place there), but I doubt it'll take place in New York City.

Yeah chicago is really the only big city left that they havent done (in the US that is) they need to make one in CURRENT time so its not the 80s or 90s.. but now.. with real awesome new cars and future stuff. Either that, or make a FULL las vegas one.. mmm that would be great.. then again.. I only think so cus thats where I live.. but I digress...

It's not NYC, don't be silly. They've already used NYC. I bet my friend $20 that it is London. Remember they used London in GTA: London back in the 90's. London is the only city they haven't remade for the 3d games.

London would be a good choice, but if they we're going to England, they should pick Yorkshire.
1. Its the biggest county, with several large cities.
2. They can avoide stereotypical cockney accents and posh boys, which have been in every single thing that has been based in london ever.

London would be great (there was an expansion for GTA 1 or 2 like that. Or maybe Amsterdam, although high speeds can become a bit difficult in downtown.

If all else fails do Moscow. Never seen that in 3D: drinking vodka, buying tasteless bling, firing ak's from im[orted suv's on the red square.. i want!

Or make a Grand-Theft Auto: Bagdad, where the protoganist is a starting contracter that needs to work his way up the lucrative-contracts chain: in the end you need to beat Haliburton from the money-maing #1 position. (or you can switch sides and join the insurgents and battle with Sadr for dominance)

I just want a great game. I could care less what city it's in. They could go with some more fictional cities for all I care.
