Rumor: Gearbox taking over Duke Nukem Forever photo

With 3D Realms taking ten billion years to make a game, there are rumors that Gearbox Software has taken over development of the Duke Nukem franchise, and will have something to announce at PAX Prime.

According to what Kotaku has heard, Gearbox has picked up the Duke Nukem Forever project, a game started in 1997. Take-Two maintains that it still has the rights to the game, and Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford says that he will be able to say something at the next PAX event in September.

This is nothing but speculation until Gearbox deigns to confirm it, but this is still a glimmer of light for those who still hoped to play Duke Nukem Forever before they died. Maybe we will indeed see this game within our lifetime!

I can see it now. Anthony Burch Presents Duke Nukem Forever. Wouldn't it be just like him to try to 1-up Aaron Linde's Boner Quest?

Clearly only kidding but a guy can dream.

I haven't really been interested with Duke Nukem, but if Gearbox did get a hold of it I would actually like to see what they would do with it.

So this is what Burch has been up to, writing all the new Nukem one-liners.

I would be excited if this was 1997. Duke Nukem is just irrelevant as a character now. Maybe those who never played the sidescrollers and shooter will find something to like.

Interesting. I'd definitely like to see it released. The footage released after the project "died" actually looked fun.

Maybe they were working on a game separate from Forever? How would I know that? Well, I do live in Dallas... maybe I know someone who worked on it... hmmm... maybe....

Even if this does go through, I can guarantee we're not seeing it until at least 2012. I don't see the point in picking up this project. Everyone knows it's basically the laughing stock of the industry... Then again, Gearbox does has some serious balls... Of Steel. And they've worked with Mr. John before.

If you don't think there are active attempts to release DNF you are a strange thing.

Can you imagine all the money that's been invested into this thing? It's gonna come out sooner or later.

That said it will be a bittersweet day for sure.

3D Realms has already hinted that another developer has been developing it for them for a while now. What doesn't make sense in this article is that 2K Games claims they still have the rights to the game. They only had the rights to publish it, they don't have it any formal say. Not to mention the U.S. Trademark Office still has 3D Realms listed as the owner of the Duke Nukem property.

But Gearbox picking up where 3D Realms last left off isn't all that surprising if it's true, since Randy Pitchford did use to work over at 3D Realms before leaving.

@Xzyliac
That's called the Sunk Cost Dilemma.
When deciding if you should go on with a project, you shouldn't consider the money that has already gone into it. That's money you've already spent. It's not coming back. You need to only compare the money that will be spent on it from this day forth and the estimated payoff.

I don't think Duke Nukem Forever can pass that test. Personally, I think fixing Duke Nukem Forever, in its current state, will be more expensive than making a new game from scratch.

I can totally get behind this. I love Gearbox's work (especially Opposing Force), and at least if they were involved the game would get fucking finished.

Yeah, considering how old this game is, they would have to keep updating the graphics to keep up with the times, to the point of probably needing a new game engine. I imagine it would be better to just make a game from scratch.

Gearbox is already working on Duke Nukem Begins. Why would they take on another project like it, especially one with the baggage that DNF has?

DNF started out as a game, but for the better part of its life, it was little more than a punchline. Kotaku claims the info is from an anonymous source. Well the only people I've seen making that claim were members of the DNF forum who were making all manner of claims in the hope that one would eventually ring true.

And bear in mind, these are the same people who tried to organize fundraisers to cover dev costs, and claimed that work was still being done on the game because they saw cars in the parking lot of 3D Realms.

I really doubt Anthony will be touching this..

I'm pretty confident all of the ex-3DR staffers at Gearbox will be putting the finishing touches on this. Under decent management, for once. Actually, they probably have been doing it all along, whilst not revealing anything in case it affected the 3DR vs. Take 2 court battle which was recently resolved.

George Broussard was likely the reason it didn't get finished this last go 'round (and the previous scrapped versions over the past 13 years).

Only our Anthony Burch could make this possible. You just know that the day Burch walked through the door of Gearbox they pulled him aside and were all like:

"You're the only one who can do it!"

And he was all, "I don't know what 'it' is, but you're damn right!"

They then proceeded to bow down at Anthony's feet.
