With 3D Realms taking ten billion years to make a game, there are rumors that Gearbox Software has taken over development of the Duke Nukem franchise, and will have something to announce at PAX Prime.
According to what Kotaku has heard, Gearbox has picked up the Duke Nukem Forever project, a game started in 1997. Take-Two maintains that it still has the rights to the game, and Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford says that he will be able to say something at the next PAX event in September.
This is nothing but speculation until Gearbox deigns to confirm it, but this is still a glimmer of light for those who still hoped to play Duke Nukem Forever before they died. Maybe we will indeed see this game within our lifetime!

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Clearly only kidding but a guy can dream.
BALLS BALLS BALLS BALLS
I wanted to play more borderlands dlcs, this shit will bankrupt them. The Nukem curse is real!!
Can you imagine all the money that's been invested into this thing? It's gonna come out sooner or later.
That said it will be a bittersweet day for sure.
That is all.
I would really like to see Ant's face when his boss told him "He you New guys, got some new lines from Duke, you know what to do" *Anthony calling Ashley*
But Gearbox picking up where 3D Realms last left off isn't all that surprising if it's true, since Randy Pitchford did use to work over at 3D Realms before leaving.
That's called the Sunk Cost Dilemma.
When deciding if you should go on with a project, you shouldn't consider the money that has already gone into it. That's money you've already spent. It's not coming back. You need to only compare the money that will be spent on it from this day forth and the estimated payoff.
I don't think Duke Nukem Forever can pass that test. Personally, I think fixing Duke Nukem Forever, in its current state, will be more expensive than making a new game from scratch.
Curse you Anthony Burch!
DNF started out as a game, but for the better part of its life, it was little more than a punchline. Kotaku claims the info is from an anonymous source. Well the only people I've seen making that claim were members of the DNF forum who were making all manner of claims in the hope that one would eventually ring true.
And bear in mind, these are the same people who tried to organize fundraisers to cover dev costs, and claimed that work was still being done on the game because they saw cars in the parking lot of 3D Realms.
I'm pretty confident all of the ex-3DR staffers at Gearbox will be putting the finishing touches on this. Under decent management, for once. Actually, they probably have been doing it all along, whilst not revealing anything in case it affected the 3DR vs. Take 2 court battle which was recently resolved.
George Broussard was likely the reason it didn't get finished this last go 'round (and the previous scrapped versions over the past 13 years).
"You're the only one who can do it!"
And he was all, "I don't know what 'it' is, but you're damn right!"
They then proceeded to bow down at Anthony's feet.
