This rumor seems to be coming out of left field, so don't put too much stock into it.
GoNintendo has some information from an anonymous source that says that GameStop reached out to Nintendo to get Xenoblade Chronicles released here. They say that the retailer is actually helping pay for the publishing, too. But, if this is true, they might be regretting that, as the same source says that preorders are not doing well so far.
This alone is a lot to take in, but there's more to butter Wii RPG fans up. This same source says that Nintendo is also interested in localizing Mistwalker's The Last Story, and that it's all hanging on the preorders and sales of Xenoblade Chronicles.
Wow, that's a big lump of rumor. Even if you're not feeling good about its validity, it still couldn't hurt to preorder Xenoblade Chronicles.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Pretty lame that GoNintendo news-dumped the post with a Kotaku-esque "anynomous source" without even mentioning GAF.
I was going to buy it to support the localization, but money is an issue, and unless they have some kind of bonus or CE, I can't really afford to.
Hating Gamestop is like hating Target or Wal-mart. They're one option in a sea of retail - the savvy consumer doesn't ally themselves blindly with one corporation - they use them all.
If Target has a $10 gift card with a game, I'll go with them; if Gamestop has some awesome pre-order DLC/bonus, I'll go to Gamestop. If you don't like selling your copy of Madden 2010 at Gamestop for .50c, go sell it on Craig's list, Half.com, or Ebay. Gamestop is one of many options, and I'm not prideful enough to ignore deals and free money because "the clerks bother me about pre-orders for 10 seconds".
I don't know if its the post or what, but reading this just pissed me off. Now I don't care to preorder (even though I already own a import copy).
Fuck NoA, they bring the game over and still bitch about it. I'll just import last story as well.
Fuck all this bullshit
How long did they swear up and down they'd buy the shit out of a GTA game. And when a GTA game came, did they buy the shit out of it? No, they didn't. And for that Chinatown Wars had to be ported all over PSP and later iOS.
If Xenoblade doesn't do well there's nothing to port it to, as its a Nintendo first party game.
I've done my part, my copy is already pre-ordered. I may even get a second copy. I really want both this and The Last Story to happen here.
I think this is probably just Nintendo's compromise. A limited release in a region where the game will have average sales. Gamers that know of the game definitely read the gaming blogs so they'll know where they can get it.
Thanks, I thought we heard about it before, and I was going crazy.
@article
Any way, I'm not all that surprised pre-orders aren't going so well. "Noteworthy" causes like Operation Rainfall who make a big fuss aside, I'm pretty sure Nintendo knew what they were doing when they originally decided they weren't bringing this or the other two games to the states.. If anything this will prove Nintendo's point (and may actually be their goal with this).
Honestly, There is a solution for this sort of thing out there. Nintendo might need to think about making a game press on demand service for these games -only pressing a game if its ordered either through their site or from gamestop. Sounds dumb, and it could be expensive (if the game industry has anything to say about it), but Amazon's got a company they work with to do this with some of their MP3 albums (I stumbled on it the other day) and plenty of movie/TV companies are opening their long hidden, even obscure, libraries to this sort of thing -and both those examples are at pretty decent prices.
So think about it, Even if a game doesn't get localized in English, all Nintendo would need to do is change the region lock and print the game, instead of worrying people will mod and import. Even open up a library of games from a catalog of other systems, update them however slightly so they'd play on the Wii (they can do it, and they know they can) and get the game directly from the source.
It'd be a very very impressive, and progressive, move on their part and they'd make money on games they never intended on selling, without overprinting and wasting a ton of cash. Yeah, you might have to wait a few more weeks for it, but you'll have it and you'll never have to say "oh man, thats never coming over here" ever agian.
I'm planning on preordering from Nintendo, and that doesn't open until the 19th.
What? I mean, huh I just...Don't want....BLOOSH! *Headsplodes*
Oh well. I already played it by other means. That's what Nintendo gets for acting like ass hats when people are demanding it.
Never say never! DUR BA DUR!
Exactly, had the wii not been region locked people wanting Xenoblade would never be a problem.
That was by far the biggest issue with that, since even getting the game legitametly. You were going to hack your wii just to play it (actually bought a second wii just for that purpose).
Region Locking is just dumb all around and just hurts the consumer.
"who are left hanging with an incredibly dry two years..."
Really? Two years? Don't you think you are exaggerating just a little bit? Yeah, 9 out of 12 months in 2011 were woeful, but two years also encompasses 2010, which was one of the best years ever for Nintendo gaming.
Too late, hot plate.
A bit of a knee-jerk reaction, isn't it?
I'm also waiting for Nintendo to open pre-orders, but that's because Gamestop won't take my money.
For buying new games, I have no problems with GS.
Appearently xenoblade is much better than the last story. I haven't played it thought but that's opinions of people who played it. And besides, MAN xenoblade is amazing! One of best games I've played :)
Nintendo is a business that wants to make lots of money - more at 11!
Nintendo is a utopian society that runs off happiness and not money - developing story inside Karu's parent's house!
So..... how's the weather on Fantasy Island?
While this rumor could very well be true it could very well be false.
As to being disapointed in Pre-Orders..... maybe they should ride NOA on getting Last story out ASAP instead of dragging ass like they did with Xenoblade to the point where the truly rabid fans IMPORTED it, instead of waiting for something NOA essentially said would never happen.
Tho I Pre-Ordered it the day it was announced.... about four days before I would have been importing it so it was pure freaking luck that It took as long as I did to beat Skyward Sword.
I hope they aren't re-dubbing, I have heard nothing but good thinks about the English English voice acting in Xenoblade.
It didn't help Chinatown Wars that it was released on a heavily pirated system. And a system that wasn't just pirated by tech-savvy people, as people that know little to nothing about computers still pirate GBA and DS games.
Heck, most of the people praising Chinatown Wars online that I ran into admitted that they pirated the game. Entire forums that were high on the game, having full topics praising it as the kind of game that gamers *needed* to support, and not a single person in the thread had actually bought it. Everyone downloaded copies instead.
As for Xenoblade, it is too little too late. Nintendo and Gamestop simply waited too long. A US release should have been announced before it came out in Europe, preferably announced long before European release. Nintendo of America kept saying they weren't doing a US release, and everyone took them at their word and either imported or simply downloaded the European release.
And yes, I will say that some of the people downloading the European release would have bought a US release. Nintendo of America's attitude actually pushed some people towards piracy, who wouldn't have gone that route otherwise.
