seeing every multiplatform article tagged as XBOX 360 on my iPhone just screams unintended bias. It's annoying I'm sure to other people and not just me.
I think the ones that aren't laying people off are the ones that have enough funding from up above to sustain their project calendar to move from title to title. Harmonix, Treyarch (heh, fires on you now kiddos!), EA Sports, Rockstar, Bethesda, 2K Games Boston, and so on.
Anyone who's out there with a mid-range, non-Xmas IP is really putting themselves on the line for this kinda thing. You shouldn't look too deeply into it though. The layoffs are a cost cutting measure to ensure the viability of the studio for the long run. Many of the artists and worker bees that get caught up in those layoffs are looking for work the day the game goes gold anyway. This is rote for them.
You ain't up to snuff, you lose your job. Boo hoo. Go do something else you might be better than average at.
There's been way too many "average" developers, bad economy led to trimming the fat of the untalented in a field of creativity.
It's too bad for those affected, but kind of inevitable in an environment and an economy where everything has to be a hit to break even.
I think Microsoft got a little carried away here with selling old games. I'm sure they licensed these pretty cheaply, but I don't think they ever stopped to do adequate research on if people actually wanted to play Jungler, much less if they were willing to pay for it.
If I could play something a bit more contemporary, say, from the late 1980's, I would have been more interested. Bummer for the people getting laid off, but honestly, if your company was putting all their eggs in the Jungler basket, you should have been shopping your resume' before hand.
