Well damn, I've been looking forward to this for so long, last I heard they had entered full production.
I've always thought the name was stupid, but the game looks waaaaay too good(...by today's SE standards anyways) to just drop completely.
I think if Square Enix wants to get any sort of credibility back, they will just release the game as FFXV. Here's hoping you're right Holmes.

13 is truly an unlucky number for square but 13 - 2 wasn't that bad at all. what i really wan't is for them to simply move on. 13 was a failed and we simply need to move forward. i long for the day that an FF game bests 7, 9, & 10

I didn't care for FFXIII for a lot of reasons and didn't bother with FFXIII-2 (and maybe won't due to rumors that FFXIII-2 has paid for ending DLC like Asura's Wrath). I was looking forward to Versus XIII so I hope this isn't true.
The sequel no one paid attention to sold much more than pretty much any other sold in the past year so it was hardly ignored. But oh well. We shall see about this, just downloaded the trailer/theme song for the game in Theatrhythm the other day so it would seem they have plans for it. Plus kotaku is luck of the draw with their rumors.

Well at least Square Enix FINALLY said something about this damn game. I'm surprised they didn't cancel it sooner.
Ahem, sorry, I meant to say "At least something was finally said about this game." Square Enix has confirmed nothing; it's just a rumor, but I wouldn't be surprised.

In true internet fashion, two games that sold nearly 10 million copies suddenly become "that old Final Fantasy game that some people really hated and then got a weird sequel that no one paid that much attention to" just because the person writing about it happens to not care them.
I'm ready for XV, but the numbers don't lie and I wouldn't be surprised if we get XIII-3 first.

If this game is canceled, I at least hope they keep everything they had built for battle system, graphics (might end up on a different engine with this part, namely Luminous), and general setup intact for a future game in the series. I don't really care if they scrap the story, just make sure whatever you decide to replace it with is REALLY good. Final Fantasy would be awesome again.
I HATED XIII, and after how much I loved Xenoblade, I've lost all faith in SquareEnix as a developer. As cool as Versus XIII looked... in my heart of hearts, I wish that SquareEnix killed it, and with it, the FF franchise, which is nothing what it used to be.
Square basically responded to the rumour with a 'no comment', so it's probably cancelled. This Neogaf RPG fansite editor is really no more reputable than whatever mysterious sources Kotaku are talking about. This cancellation supposedly only happened within the last few weeks anyway so this 'insider' is probably well out of the loop by now.

XIII sold less than 5 million units worldwide and XIII-2 barely sold 2 million. They are the lowest-selling mainline Final Fantasy games since FF6.

Yes, I can infer something from that. It suggests that Square are reluctant to confirm or deny the possibility that the game is cancelled. Stop grasping at straws.

FFXIII sold around 7 million copies, you forgot the 360 version. FFIX, X-2 and XII sold considerably less. FFXIII-2 on the other hand is hovering a little above 2 million but It's still on the high end compared to the other jrpgs. Not to mention It hasn't even been out a year yet.

This is about the time a new final fantasy comes out. So let's say Versus is now FF15, and Middle Eastern Final Fantasy (Agni's Philosophy tech demo) can be 16 in the next five years. See? 15 and 16 all planned out, make your spinoff psp games like Type 0 in between.

^And I say this not so much because I care for the game, because even though it looks dark the characters seem about as goofy as Tidus when they interact. I just want this clog out of that company's arteries so they can produce things again.

Versus has zero qualities of a main line title so would never be renamed as such

I so hope not...I've been looking forward to this game ever since they first showed the trailer way back when. XIII vanilla never sounded or looked interesting to me. This did.
I think the realization that Square is coming to is that the XIII brand as a game series has just been dragged out too long, XIII-2 sold a third as much as the first one, and Versus XIII would probably have another drop off from what that game sold, and chances are they wont recycle assets for it like they were for XIII-2
Rumors and speculation are supposed to be responded with fanatic defense, right? If Stealth wasn't here, poor ol' SE would be so sad.
Just name it Final Fantasy XV or Final Fantasy VIII-2, because that's what its always reminded me of.

Unfair comparison. If IX had been released for N64, and X-2 and XII for GC and Xbox, the hypothetical sales numbers of those games could have very well been higher than XIII's.

Not sure I'd agree considering the xbox and gamecube had a much smaller market share than the PS2(especially compared to the few million difference between the 360 and PS3) and a limited market for jrpgs but that very well could have been the case. In any case he was talking purely in terms of sales figures and by that alone It's done better than the last few entries by a decent amount. If FFXIII had been a PS3 exclusive I'd imagine it would have easily sold enough on its own to easily match the other games. Can't really act like the other console doesn't exist though, especially when it adds such a large amount of sales.
I'm really glad they're making 13-3, so they can resolve the depressing cliffhanger ending.
