I believe all sorts of bullshit. For example, I believe Square Enix will rise to its former glory one day.
Anyway, it was just a theory. I just think its a bit unfair to compare a game that has been released on multiple systems with a game that has only been release on one system. To me its like saying Assassins Creed 2 sold better than Mario Galaxy 2. Of course it did since it was released on multiple systems and therefore reached a wider audience.
@ricochetguro
True. Had XIII been released as a PS3 exclusive, its PS3 sales could have been higher. Maybe even higher than sales for IX, X-2 and XII.
I think FF Versus XIII should definitely be renamed. It never was a good title.
I haven't been a Square fan for a long time (since they turned into Squarenix), but this game looked quite good. The charaters and story seemed better than in XIII and the music and presentation was awesome (from the trailer at least).
Square needs to move away from the XIII universe. It took VII years to get a real sequel (well prequel) with Crisis Core (let's not count the shit that was dirige of cerberus) and that is one of most beloved FF in the whole franhise.
XIII on the other hand was just average and regarded by many as one of the worse main entries in the FF franchise. Yet it already has a sequel and there rumor going around about XIII-3.
And to be honest, the XIII world, story and characters just suck. Final Fantasy used to have fun stories, with great characters and an amazing world. But now, while playing XIII and specially XIII-2, I feel like I'm playing a story that was writen for 12 years old otaku girls. In over 14 years playing Jrpg's (I'm 21... I guess I was abou 6-7 when I played the first one) FFXIII-2 is the first RPG that has had me wanting to skip the cutscenes.
Kotaku could say that Baltimore was swallowed by a whale, and people in Baltimore would believe it.. They're always convincing, even when shits just flying out their ass.
"The whole purpose of linking Versus XIII to Final Fantasy XIII back in 2006 was to show consumers that the next evolution in the Final Fantasy series was to be a gigantic, multi-dimensional, very important enterprise."
Well, your forgetting it was also due, maybe more so, to the fact that they had this big engine they spent so much time and money creating, and wanted to get more out of it then a single game.
Fact is, people still don't see FFXIII Versus as just another FFXIII game, even after XIII-2. They're still taking it as a completely different, better, experience, using this engine. The hype machine surrounding this game is huge, and even if Square manages to released only half the game, it'd probably sell like hotcakes, simply because its finally being released.
Is that right to do it like that? No. But is it right to not release it because of what you say about FFXIII as a brand being a failing prospect? Equally No.
They should just suck in their gut, chalk it up to their old ways and finish the game and release it. Then they should move on and actually -finally- create games in a timely manner (again, since they used to do this fine back in the 90's/early 2000's). If the game sucks, it sucks, but at least they won't lose thousands of fans due to something as stupid as not releasing probably the only game that anyone's been really excited for, from them specifically (no Eidos BS), in maybe a decade. Cause I sense that a lot of fans *are* going to walk away if Sqaure walks away from this.
Now, something I do support, is making it its own FF game, without the XIII.. THAT I can get behind Mr. Holmes.
@Vic
Well, thats what happens when a company spends ages, and tons of money, building an extravagant graphics engine, only to figure out that they spent to much time doing that, and not enough time selling games. They're going to milk that engine till the cows come home.
The engine is the franchise, and its only been made that big because the engine was only ever meant for FFXIII games -which became more of a naming convention/game then just a single title. They could make a Deus Ex game out of it and it'd probably be called something like FFXIII Versus Deus Ex, or Deus Ex FFXIII.
LOL
"A Senior US Editor, Erren Van Duine Square Enix resourceful source was awared and respond to the rumor that Final Fantasy Versus XIII is alive and it will be shown at this year’s Tokyo Game Show.
It turn out to be Kotaku was wrong after all."
Kotaku is ALWAYS wrong...
These idiots have been developing this ridiculous shit for 7 years now instead of making Kingdom Hearts III. This is what they thought that team's time would be best spent on. And let's not even get into the complete debacle that is Final Fantasy XIV Online.
If Square is smart, they've put out FF XIII-3 late next year to milk a little more out of the engine and the universe they spent all those years developing (believe it or not, XIII-2 *was* profitable), and they'll repurpose Versus as FF XV for the next generation.
Oh, and get to fucking work on a real Kingdom Hearts sequel. Thanks, ass holes.
My conversation with holmes
"Kotaku had nothing to gain and everything to lose by posting a bogus rumor. Your NeoGAF guy had nothing to lose and everything to gain by fabricating information to gain attention for his floundering site. The choice of who to believe is pretty clear. "
"...respond to the rumor that Final Fantasy Versus XIII is alive and it will be shown at this year’s Tokyo Game Show."
Well, FFV13's existence is now in flux because it's just a rumor. People seriously take any of this at face value?
Kotaku is always wrong, and that neogaf mod is always right
if she says it will be shown and dated at tgs you can take that to the bank
