If a seemingly oddball rumor holds true, it appears that Dragon Age: Origins owners could be devouring a huge slab of DLC in the near future. Something much more epic than Warden’s Keep or Return to Ostagar.
The Czech Web arm of Eurogamer is running the sexy gossip: according to the Web site, EA and Bioware are slated to announce a full expansion for the PC version of the game dubbed Dragon Age: Awakening this January. The content is said to feature a wholly new character, as well as a proper origins narrative, and at least 15 hours of additional play time.
Eurogamer.cz continues with the info drop, stating it believes that the content will drop in Europe this March (possibly retail and digital) and will cost around two-thirds of the game’s original price.
We’ve dropped a letter to Bioware to check the validity of this, but like proper people, the studio’s staff is probably enjoying the seasonal break. We’ll let you guys know when we get the answer. Until then, celebrate the fact that expansions are still being rumored in this era of micro-transactions.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Which sucks but it just seems like a thing they'd do. I couldn't say if they' offer it as a download for consoles. Maybe. I'm not too experienced in the field of expansions.
Eh, I bought all the Fallout 3 DLC before the GOTY and I don't feel screwed over. Mostly it's because my money is going towards a company I actually like and hope to see succeed.
It's the gamers' selfishness that is ruining the industry (what with pirating and all that).
Back on topic, can't wait to see this! Was hoping they'd have an expansion, but with how they treated Mass Effect I didn't hold much hope.
Either way, as long as they don't tap Orson Scott Card to write on it I'll be buying.
I'm gonna say 90% chance it's not real.
Could anyone tell me if I'm moving slowly through the game I've only just reached the first town, and the begining.
I'd bet on the second =D
SPOILERS SPOILERS
Besides, before the Battle at Ostagar there are quite a few sidequests that you're probably taking care of.
If I'm not letting Bandai-Namco get away with it, why should Bioware get a pass?
Also, I find this whining about DLC, and "expansions were much better" to be retarded. When "expansions" were common, people whined their assbeards off about them instead.
Its a matter of perspective I think.
If you look at it as things that were planned, designed, and not released with the original retail release, then yep, you could say its withheld content.
If you look at it as Content that, without models of digital distribution, would have been solidly left on the cutting room floor, then you could consider that what was in the retail package (including the free at retail Shale DLC) was what was intended as the retail release and that's what they did. Separately, some items were considered added but non-essential: If you don't pick up any of the DLC, you're most certainly getting a full experience.
To be frank, I think Dragon Age is worth your time and money because of the massive amounts of content.
Further, consider that Namco-Bandai is witholding content that's "locked" on the disc from day one. Bioware, on the other hand, is releasing content that's seeing additional development and requires a download of final content.
But ultimately, how you feel about DLC is what it is, whether you're limiting yourself from great content or not. If the millions of ords of discourse on the matter hasn't changed your mind on it, I do reckon the supporters now, in the comments, can't convince you either.
happy gaming!
I've gotten plenty for my money and I'm not downloading a key for junk already on the disc just so they can charge me more. I felt like I had a complete enough experience.
very minor spoilers** I remember the first time I was at the camp and there was a quest indicator. I started a conservation with the guy to only learn it was the quest for the Warden's keep. I thought this was a pretty crappy solicitation for my $5. **end spoilers.
Fallout 3 had a great model for DLC where it was transparent if you did not have it. The best use of DLC is where there are some subtle gems of lore that stand on their own but also may imply an interesting adventure that can come to fruition.
As for the timing issue, let's not forget that DA:O was pretty much finished in April, and was delayed purely so it'd be released on all three gaming systems at the same time. There's time in there for the writing team to work on something new, I'd reckon.
Anyway, more DA is good, in whatever form it comes. Hoping this rumour is true.
Also, I think we can all agree that first day DLC is usually bad as well.
