Rumor: Digital rental of PSP games coming? photo

The PSpgo has been getting some flack from us, though when it finally landed I think we gave it a pretty fair shake. One of the great things about it is that the downloadable game service over PSN was pretty robustly supported at launch (as may possibly be discussed later today in a feature - come back to find out). However, with no UMD how the hell is anyone supposed to rent games anymore? Sony may have us covered.

While digging around on their new PSPgo, Retail Gamer discovered something interesting. On the PS3 one can sort one's games into folders, but you can't do that on the PSPgo. Finding this fact a little odd they pressed square to re-sort the folders like one does on the PS3. The PSPgo did sort the games, but the way it did it was by expiration date. What expiration date? When you download a game onto the PSPgo you own it, it doesn't expire. This can lead to only one conclusion. Much like the movie rental service on PSN a game rental service will be coming for PSP games. We wouldn't be surprised, actually.

I seriously doubt anyone finds this news truly shocking, but as the information is already built into the system at launch we probably won't be waiting too long before we can basically start demoing entire games instead of just little snippets. And who is to say this would only work on the PSP? Any system with a download service (all of them) could conceivably pull off a rental service.

"I seriously doubt anyone finds this news truly shocking..."

Indeed because the PS3 has had the same thing since launch.

I'm pretty sure the PSP has had that for a pretty long time now. If not, I may have been hallucinating or something. They used it with some timed demos before, iirc.

@Jayge: You're right, PSP games/demos have had that for more than a year or longer, but no game ever made use of that.

@Takeshi: I know right? Do people never explore their machines' menus?

Not surprising. This is Sony, folks. They're not the same company they used to be.

NEWSFLASH:

The PS3 has this on all PSN downloads, regardless if you buy it or not. It's only there for beta's and such. Talk about making a story out of nothing, although it is Sunday, so I forgive you.

Any kind of digital distribution that you can not safely back up and reinstall/reuse any way you see fit IS a rental, why? because if anything happens to the service, server, device running it or contains DRM of some sort locking it, it will eventually be unplayable, it's just a matter of time. We have seen it already happen with countless mp3 selling services, nothing they say will prevent it short of absolute freedom. And that very reason is why digital distribution will take quite a long time to become the standard.

Or they will be using this for timed demos, a la L4D.

hmm I wonder if they'll release this feature in Belgium where game-rentals have been outlawed on the request of the gaming-industry...

I think it's more that there's a flagging system in place for all PSN downloads and we're extrapolating on the same flags that are in place for SD and HD video downloads.

I'm beginning to wonder how many people on this staff are even remotely familiar with the Playstation 3. Just saying...

It's stupid that this non-story is proliferating amongst game sites. I know it's cool to hate the psp and all but a minimum of research would have nipped this whole affair in the bud.

Maybe now they'll update the story with "correction, this expiration thing has been in place for a long time, gamer blogs succeed at instigating bs again."

Everything on the PS3 and PSP has an "Expires" section. Doesn't really mean anything.

Honestly, I think they SHOULD do PSP and PS3 game rentals. Demos are great, but let us download the games that can't be bought in retail so we can experience the whole thing. Then if we like the game, and we want to buy it before the rental time is up, our money for the rental can be put towards the full purchase. It's a win/win for everyone.

how about this: the ps3 displays the date, does that mean we can time travel if we change it?

don't mean shit.

Not reading the comments, this article is blatantly retarded.

All games/demos/betas you download from PSN onto your PS3 has the expiration tab, whether or not it ever intended on having one.
