I've gamed for most of my 29 years and I'll walk away from the entire market if this is the future. That's literally thousands of dollars a year (yes, I buy almost every game I want and I buy them all new) lost. And I'm not the only one who will storm out. It's not worth it for me to be into gaming if I can only do it on PC. Sorry PC fans, but there's not enough exclusives and quite a bit of what I like is exclusive to consoles. Maybe I'm finally getting too old for this.
Or maybe, just maybe, these companies are losing what's left of their collective minds. I sincerely hope younger gamers don't embrace this just because CoD6 and Halo 5 will be on them. Why don't we start putting tacks in car seats while we're at it and charge you a small fee to not have them ram up your crack while you drive? Thankfully this is just rumor for now and I hope it stays that way.
The PCs await you with open arms.
MUWAHHHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHFJDFHKJFHWEIUNFUighirughiufhSHIT
In all seriousness, I would be absolutely pissed if this occurred. It would be enough to push me out of the console arena. Between the rumors of MS and Sony both considering something akin to digital distribution, I would not be surprised if there was an ounce of truth. I already get my digital distributed titles on the PC and for a hell of a lot cheaper. Sure, if they can pull off the same deals and moves that Steam and GoG have done, then maybe I will consider it. However, it will be harder for me to justify something that is not as open as my PC. Plus, if there really is no backwards compatibility, even IF I decided to purchase a new console, this would probably delay my purchase for a long time or even cancel the purchase.
Small, ie online kind of price, I think that's passable.
Large, ie half of retail price, no fucking way.
The few details rumored about all 3 next Gen consoles have me really not giving a fuck...
The games will seriously have to blow my mind for me to consider partaking...
The downfall of gaming has begun.
Yes, and Steam is DRM that ruins games just as much as any other DRM does. Fun Fact: I've never paid more than $5 for a game that requires Steam, and I don't plan on changing that.
Just because Steam has sales and is made by Valve doesn't mean permanently tying your games to your account is suddenly okay.
"Will we get fewer shit titles? one can only assume."
LOL. I don't think the presence of a used game market dictates whether or not companies make a game that is good or is shit. Shitty developers will always make shitty games.
I don't even mind the inability to trade in used games or buy used games, but I hate that we can't even share games we purchase with other family members in our own house.
I've enjoyed my time gaming, and it's been a long old time, but fuck it man. I ain't tolerating this shit to play some video games.
If that is actually how it's gonna be, I'm gonna be "That dude" who in 10 years time is still playing his PS3, saying shit like "you kids don't have a clue, it used to be so good!" like an old man and shit.
The measures companies like MS, Sony and EA are taking are a factor in my doing this, though not the sole.
^_^;
I will definetly be thinking long and hard about any console that I think is bad for me as a consumer, and if all else fails I will just have to embrace the PC master race.
Taking all this with a grain of salt for now, but if this stuff pans out I may give up console gaming. This is not the right direction.
You can't get Trophies on Vita games that other have played, as they've been more or less locked to that other persons account (though theres a way around it I hear, but not for every game -depends on the publisher/circumstance I guess).
I'm going through this with my roommate right now, since they took my Army Corps of Hell game when we both got our Vitas thinking it'd be fine, and now it seems like I might not be able to achieve anything on it (and my roommate doesn't care about Trophy's or Achievements, where I do -- So its kind of salt in the wound for me)
I'm sure there will be other restrictions for the new consoles games though --like multiplayer lockouts for preowned ,already registered, games. Surely thats how Sony figures doing away with the online pass and forcing new game sales (unless they keep being able to buy a pass for $10, for those wanting the preowned game -but I expect the price of the pass to go up actually)
What I think this will mean for players is a lot of waiting for games to go down in price --but I also think because of this games will become cheaper even faster then they already do. A lot of people won't be able to afford them right away and retailers of all kinds will have to see that, and places like Amazon, who are already in the practice of taking advantage of this, will take greater advantage and sell the games on the cheap and make a bundle from pushing the completion.
So, really, I do see cheaper games in it for us --and I see the console companies being really pissed over that.
DLC? I rarely by it and only when there is a sale. DD games? only on sale. Notice how they raised all games to 10-15 bucks? no thanks.
online Passes? No thank you. I can wait till its cheaper brand new and not pay 10 bucks if I bought it used.
Sure it sounds like I'm just being cheap. Well, I am. And the industry forced me to do it. How much money do they think I have?
Next gen, if rumors are true, will just get worse and at that point it won't be worth it to me to even jump in. even if the games are amazing, the fact that I am just "renting" games (were kinda doing it this gen too) will result in a resounding "meh" from me.
download retail games onto a console?
no backwards compatability with whats turning out to have the best exclusives of all 3 systems.
fat chance in hell.
let me make a rumor.
remember the ps9 commercial for ps2? thats how it will look based on a very trusted source of mine, and it will have something like the visual boy as a controller.
Seriously, we gamers as consumers are morons, we let this happen. Try doing something similar while buying a TV second-hand, "Oh since it's used it'll only pick up 20 channels of the 500 hundred you pay through your satellite-TV provider." Simply nuts.
I'd like to say Sony won't be that stupid, but I can't.
"According to the source, games purchased either from PlayStation Network or on disc will be locked to the user's PSN account."
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I already convinced myself that the PS3 would be my last console. After all the firmwares updates, I realised that I never owned the console, I rented it. If this inside info is true (and God I wouldn't be surprised) Sony just sealed the deal for me.
HAHAHAHAHAHAH! Goodbye consoles, I'm gone for good.
The backwards thing I figured wouldn't be the case if they are dropping the whole cell processor. A shame really.
That being said, there should be some profit-sharing in the used game market. The stores should give some of their used game profits to the publishers for the sake of being fair.
If the rumors of Microsoft doing this are true as well, I think we're about to see the next gaming crash. And at the rate we're going, it can't fucking happen soon enough.
