Glad that I got an Alienware recently, because at the rate this industry is going, playing on the PC and handheld systems is going to be the way to go. Well, except for one company: Nintendo. They seem to show no interest in idiotic schemes like this. Which makes me think that, after two generations of their home consoles being derided by hardcore gamers, the Big N is going to pull in a big win, making the least restrictive console with HD and ergo, making the one everybody's going to want, thus pulling ahead in the console wars once again.

This would be inherently flawed. Right now I can't even access the playstations and also the psn goes down regulatory for whole days to do maintenance. Would we lose access to our legally paid for games whenever Sony or Microsoft need to do maintenance? The psn being hacked has shown that the corporations are not invincible. Why would I want to tie ACCESS to legally purchased content based on their server =conditions. Say someone who doesn't know that the psn was down had gone into a store and purchased a ps3 with some games. Are you telling me that even if all of that was brand new they wouldn't be able to have played anything for two months.
Yeah of Sony and MS do this, ill stick to retro, pc and this current gen. Maybe a Wii U. Still a fuck ton of games I haven't played and shits only getting cheaper. I said it in an earlier post: This industry will crash again if this shit keeps up. Pull your heads out of your asses. EVERYONE. Companies pull this, because while we ALL piss and moan, very FEW of us actually vote with our dollars. Shit, I'm guilty too. It wasn't till January this year when I fucking just had enough of passes, dlc and unfinished shit. Waiting for price drops is now my mo and its really not that hard. I went from spending at least $160 a month to about $50. Same amount of games and enjoyment, just not all the shinies.
This will be suicide. I'm not ready to believe it just yet since it really seemed like Sony was heading in the other direction based on recent comments and changes to their policy to create a more open system for developers. I can't support the PS4 or Xbox 720 with these current rumours though.
Why wouldn't they do this, Sony hates used games and what better way to fight it than baking it in at a hardware level, but I'm massively disappointed about no ps3 BC, you'd figure they would have learned that lesson, but how else could they make 4k hd remakes?
I'm doubting that the 'locked to the PSN account' is going to make it to final product. My only real concern is that with the next-gen console, Sony will start requiring payment plans for everyone to access the PSN. Personally, I think that is much more likely than this rumor.
Of course, if it turns out to be true, for this Orbis and whatever the hell the next Xbox turns out to be, well, I've been playing more tabletop games than videogames recently anyway, I have a huge backlog of last-gen games I never played, pretty sure I can make it through a console generation without buying anything new, and still play all-new games (to me, at least). Save a shit-ton of money, too.

I don't think the used games thing is real at all. I can't see this happening with either microsoft or sony. Rumors are rumors, but this GPU blows the nextboxes 6670 out of the water lol.

Any console that locks games to my account will be a no buy from me. I need both myself and my wife to play games... and my son when he's old enough. Sony can go to hell forever if they implement that.

Yay!!! I just found out I'm going to be up $300+ next year. Actually even more since I'll end up canceling my gamefly account. I'll be honest any games I buy anymore its for my PC usually through steam. I just have a hard time justifying spending $60 dollars for a game when you don't even get all the content on the disc anymore for that price even if you buy it new. I'm fine without getting the MP content with buying used because most games that come with MP suck ass.

2013 release? Wouldn't even consider the thought of that being true. I have to say, these are some pretty harsh rumors here. Though, I'm confident they're not real. Even if they were true, do they really expect people to buy something this ass backwards? Especially after the long rocky road the PS3 had been on. I personally don't think Sony is on good terms to release something this bold and have it be a success. Even with the clueless consumers.

Used games via mass retail like Gamestop are going away, that's just inevitable. But the used game market itself will last as long as people want it. Then again technology has a way of dictating what people should and shouldn't buy. But reading this... the transition to locked on console games won't be as easy as the changeover from DVD to Blueray (which wasn't as easy as the change of VHs to DVD). Companies like Sony often pay the price for their attempts at full control over their marketplace. If you make a game that sucks, and people don't like it... why would they want to keep it when someone else might want it? I often talk about companies as if they're on their last legs, but the thing is... Sony is still in 3rd place everywhere but Asian markets after a slew of poor marketing decisions and shoddy product ideas. We shall see, however in my opinion losing backwards compatibility is the final nail in Sony's console coffin. After-all, they were the company that pioneered it's necessity with the PS2!!!

If they want to make my games significantly cheaper than they are now, I may not mind the whole, "Once you buy it, only you can play it". I really only buy PC games when they're on sale for at least half-off their regular MSRP (with a few exceptions, like Diablo III as I'll definitely get more than my money's worth) because I'll never be able to trade them in or even give them away at a later date. If I'm giving up true ownership of my item, then I'll be damned if I'm paying full price for it.
When you lease a car from a dealer, so long as you agree to specific, usually reasonable terms, you can get a brand new car for relatively little money. Why the hell would I pay full price (again, with certain exceptions) for something I'll never actually own?

If this truly is what lies ahead, then I think I may finally retire gaming as a hobby. I'll stick to the games of days past. It was a good run while it lasted. Collecting and playing games was actually a fun thing to do. This isn't the case anymore. The future's promise of unparalleled graphics and refined gameplay really means nothing to me. It was always about more than just that. These are the things my generation was born into when it was still in it's infancy. The magic fades more and more with the passing of each generation as the whole entire thing becomes more and more bastardized by corporate greed.

Backwards compatibility is nice, sure, but if anything, all this generation proved is that Sony used it as a trojan horse to get their PS1 audience on board for the PS2, and that it's otherwise, a gimmicky headache for hardware manufacturers.
And before you ask, yes, I however expect them to have BC if their last console's specs was based on the Gamecube. Point being, cell-processors aren't exactly Gamecube-esque.

I, for one, am not concerned. If it turns out that Sony and Microsoft are actually going to travel blindly down that path, I just keep playing current consoles. My pile of shame is enormous, I've got years of gaming backlog to get through.
not really against the anti used approach, but we'll see. most ppl defending used games come off as selfish. I suspect that if ppl are forced (pretty much) to buy games new tho, they will be more selective, and thus expectations should rise. If studios match this ( most likely done by allowing developers more creative freedom and less publishers wanting clones of sucessfully selling titles only) then perhaps we will finally all stop getting sequel over kill. it could happen :P
@ Nicholas Patrick: Gamestop's sales figures and stock beg to differ the opinion that they're "going away." In fact, one of the core reasons that companies are doing this idiotic move is sheer jealousy because GS is turning a profit off of used games, profit that Sony and Microsoft and other big corporations aren't seeing a dime from. As a vendor on Amazon, I can attest to the fact oftentimes GS has better deals on something than anybody on the internet does. Granted, that's not always true by any means, but that fact shows that there's a place for both retail and online used game sales. There always will be, and it's an integral part of the industry as a whole.
