It's 2010, and that means we can all look forward to a brand new Call of Duty game releasing in November. Last year was Infinity Ward's turn, so this year we can all look forward to another uninspired World War II shooter from Treyarch ... OR CAN WE!? According to rumors, Treyarch might actually be growing a set and trying something new(ish) this year -- taking players to Vietnam.
Call of Duty 7 is said to be a very story-driven game, focusing on individual members of a Vietnam platoon. Because this is Treyarch, the game's pacing is rumored to be liberally taken from other people's work, namely war films such as Saving Private Ryan, Platoon, Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket. So, it'll basically be every war film we've ever seen.
Of course, this is nothing but rudderless speculation for now, but it seems very likely to me. World War II is old news now, while Vietnam will allow Treyarch to do something new without being too inventive or original, which is pretty much that studio's territory. How do you feel about Call of Duty reflecting upon America's greatest military triumph? Sounds good, or have previous Vietnam games (i.e, Shellshock) turned you off of the idea?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
As long as I get to burn down forests and villages with a flamethrower, I'm satisfied.
Oh, and survival mode with zombie gooks, you can't forget that.
Like Chronic Logic said: Pop culture. Take it seriously but not too seriously. Give the characters some heart and the narrative some soul.
Who knows it might be great. I just can't recall much outside survival mode for cod5.
the shareholders would disagree.
Modern Warfare 2's single player experience was like reading an all capitals paragraph overflowing with run-on sentences. Just trying to one-up itself constantly with set pieces and situations, which isn't a bad thing - but they didn't give any breathing room in between these experiences to make said set pieces and situations THAT much bigger. As for multiplayer? I had enough of that run-and-gun, twitch-and-die gameplay with Quake 3 Arena back when it dropped.
Battlefield: Vietnam was really good when it tried it's hand on the historical situation. It had it's flaws, sure; but in the end it was a fun multiplayer experience.
If Treyarch can distance itself from the same exact engine CoD 4 & 6 used (which it won't, it will just re-skin their version of CoD 5) it may have a chance to actually be fun - not just flashy wrapped with a bow.
infinity ward turned evil/crazy
cod franchise is dead to me
Afte reading your comments I can see you call anyone who doesn't agree with your opinion biased (which kinda makes you look biased). So I wouldn't expect any less from you good sir.
Like the Korean War, The Civil War, War of 1812, etc.? You know, when war had some class?
MW2 was actually alright in multiplayer, with special ops being the highlight of it (I pray they release more missions). I'm also sure that if you actually switched it from Team Deathmatch, you might enjoy the game more. I prefer Domination much more, as its less run and gun, fire and forget.
I know, I know. But it was actually really fun! The perfect bridge between BF1942 and BF2, it was fun as hell owning people on foot with my tank while blaring White Rabbit as loud as possible.
Or flying around in a chopper's gunner seat while Fortunate Son is playing.
Or OMG, Ride of the Valkyries playing while flying down on an enemy!
Hrm, come to think of it, the in-game, in-vehicle soundtrack was the best feature that I can remember. :D
I learned my lesson when I literally couldn't stomach the second chapter/level in Treyarch's first attempt, CoD3. Have we already forgotten that this developer was making Tony Hawk games? What with Tony Hawk sucking lately, they should go back to what they did best.
They've gotten a reputation of pure suck, so maybe the new setting will get them out of their rut. I'll RENT CoD7, but they haven't earned my 'day one purchase' promise like Infinity Ward has.
I remember that game! Never bought it but I definitely remember it. Hmm...I'll check it out.
Treyarch can only make a decent game with IW's engine and assets - they are not that original.
This series is a money grab now, all of the heart and soul of the series is gone. I remember the original games respecting the soldiers who fought and died in the name of freedom and justice - now the series is a soap opera with indestructable super soldiers slaughtering thousands, or faceless characters getting killed off for shock value.
I love CoD4, and I still enjoy CoD:MW2 multiplayer, but I doubt Treyarch (or even IW) can bring back the magic of the originals - especially now that they have used up all of the good war 'quotes'.
It's not World War 2, at least. I can imagine the production meetings when they decide on World War 2, and they're the saddest short stories I can fathom.
"I have both consoles"
What is this, 1994?
I would like to see some of you make a game as good as Treyarch under so much pressure.
Fools
and my vietnam curiosity was well satisfied with vietcong. If I want to go vietnam I'll just install that again. Actually I think I will reinstall that.
I miss platformers D:
