Rumor: Blu-ray Profile 1.1 coming to PlayStation 3 before Christmas photo

Potentially great news for all you PlayStation 3 owners out there who are using the system as a Blu-ray player or plan to do so eventually: there's a new rumor floating around the 'nets saying that Profile 1.1 will be coming to the console via firmware as a Christmas present from Sony.

Seeing as how the PS3 is the only Profile 1.0 player that can be upgraded to Profile 1.1, all of the Blu-ray enthusiasts who opted for Sony's latest console offering should be mighty happy right now.

Because HD DVD has always supported the features of Profile 1.1 (picture-in-picture, local storage, secondary audio), fanboys of the format aren’t going to take this news lightly. It's been one of the primary arguments as to why HD DVD is superior to Blu-ray ever since the format war started.

Sounds nice. It's a real shame they didn't implement this stuff from the beginning. Perhaps if that were the case we'd have Blu-ray everything and HD-DVD nothing.

Secondary audio wasn't supported in the first draft for Blu-Ray? I can see why this is being taken so seriously.

I'd like to point out that buying a movie, to means that I'm buying the movie, and I could give two flying shits about special features.

I just want the movie.

Anything else that people wag their dicks about over format A vs format B, to me, is a lot of hot air.

Why should you pick just the movie over the special edition?

Well, the biggest reason, at least on DVD where space is a concern, more often than not, movies that are released in two formats, the one that has NO special features on it, is usually encoded at a substantially higher bit rate to fill all that extra space that isn't full of pointless talking head interviews. BluRay and HD DVD eliminate this to some degree, but the next time you have the option of picking up a DVD and there's a bare bones version next to a $10 higher feature packed super delux-o edition consider this...

Would you rather have a movie at 2.5Mb a second or at 6Mb a second?

BTW, 6Mb looks better...

Less features = More room for the movie, folks.

@qwerty... book store and tires? Not a good analogy at all.

Higher bit rates are better. Even some of my BR movies could use a higher bit rate in some places. CBS needs to up their bit rates too. ESPN football looks way better.

You're right that DVD - features + higher bit rate = better movie, and that HD/BR - features = just plain lazy. There is a lot of space on these discs, but like DVD, I'd rather they lower the price and leave most of the extra crap off of the disc. I've not watched extras or listened to directors commentary since 2003.

I'm in the same boat bhive. I only listen to commentary on The Simpsons box sets and that's about it. I really don't have the time or patience to sit through hours of talking heads interviews about how wonderful it was to work with Actor A or Director B on the set. It's all self congratulatory bullshit half the time anyway.

Look! A behind the scenes look of one of your favorite scenes from the movie! Alternate angles! Now it's in Mandarin!

My aggravation at special features really dipped a lot with the HD stuff, but it's still more aggravating anyway. Why? Because they changed the special features and found more ways to fill up disc space that isn't full of movie.

You know what my two best looking BluRays are?

The Fifth Element and Pirates of the Caribbean.

And the reason why they look so stellar is because they either shuffled all the special features off to a second disc or didn't put any significant features on there at all.

As a result, the movies have a nice heavy 25Mb/s average through the whole movie and they look gorgeous.

On DVD, BR, or HD DVD,whatever, stick the special features on a second disc. No complaints from me, I swear. Audio commentaries don't count since a Dolby stereo track takes up like 130 MB for a movie. That's nothing, fine, stick it in there. But for pete's sake, don't skimp on my movie.

How many people still use a PS2 for dvd playback?

Standalones are always superior, Sony just majorly screwed over early adopters tsk tsk.

@qwerty... On HD-DVD they have flash memory built in. It has to do with downloading from the internet and maybe loading menus and stuff into memory so they can be pulled up during the movie.

Secondary Audio... I have no idea, sorry.

I know that the new Harry Potter HD-DVDs were going to have this feature where you could watch them with a friend and type messages to each other while watching it. The BR version didn't have this because some of the features required in the HD-DVD spec for doing online interactivity weren't required for the BR spec 1.0. Perhaps with 1.1 this will be possible in the future.

Sony's actually going to look like the champ for BluRay here, because all stand alone players on BluRay are NOT upgradeable.

Most can be flashed, but the manufacturers aren't guaranteeing anything. A PS3 is the best decision one can make for a BluRay player, even if you never get a single game for it.

Another winning graphic.

I'm happy about the change, but if HD-only supporters didn't know that BD would be having these features implemented within the next six months, they were turning a blind-eye to the obvious. Also, lots of other BD players can be updated to 1.1, it just requires an external device from which to load the update.

@AgentMOO, on an HDTV you can really see the difference. SD TV's it would be difficult to tell the difference.

I spent 60 quid on a samsung upscaling dvd player, looks good enough to me at the mo, gonna wait until this childs fight is all over!

I love the pic, so let me get this straight, Blu ray is a big dirty freight train thats evil and hd-dvd is a friendly tank engine that always wins in the end and learns valuable lessons along the way?

hahaha, i love the pic

@agentmoo... i don't know, for me on my PS3 i haven't seen such a drastic difference between bluray movies and DVDs... i attribute it to the fact that the PS3 has an awesome upscaler, but it could also be that i'm using a relatively small HDTV (just about 18")

Finally BR starts to add these features, it was the only thing making me hesitant to buy a BR over HD except for the fact that The Matrix is only out on HD DVD, damnit BR win!!!!! and get the Matrix or HD DVD so I can buy the XBOX external player and get the Matrix.... again

Yeah it is because your HDTV is pretty small, probably abround 40" or so the difference is much more pronounced. Not enough for me to buy a BR player or a PS3...or risk buying the HD addon for the 360 and having it lose. I love format wars.

Well if you have a small TV, HD or not, there isn't going to be a huge jump in quality between DVD and Blu-ray.

I'm siding with bhive and dvd on this one. Higher quality > features, always.

Lastrite-

I actually got rid of my stand alone player and use only my ps2 as a dvd player.

I didn't see the point of having both. I did pay the $13 for the Sony branded DVD remote. It works really nice for SD content.

I have the PS3 for BD and would consider a stand alone for that. It takes to long to turn on compared to the PS2.

@dtomek, Grim: Not necessarily. Granted, 18" is quite small (I didn’t know they made HDTVs that small; I’ve only seen 19-inchers), but I have a 26" Samsung LCD, and watching House and 24 in HD (free OTA HDTV FTW! damn, that’s a lot of acronyms) is a huge upgrade over even the HD-upscaled DVD sets that I have. Also, as far as I’m aware, watching HD content on an SDTV makes no difference whatsoever in picture quality. Back before I bought my HDTV, I was playing my PS3 on a crappy seven-and-a-half-year-old 13" CRT, and I remember downloading SD and HD trailers for Little Miss Sunshine from the PS Store. They looked identical, and I’m the kind of guy who notices that sort of stuff.

As to the story itself, this is great news. It’s not that non-PS3 Blu-ray players aren’t upgradeable; it’s just that Blu-ray players aren’t required to have an internet connection (i.e., an Ethernet jack), while all HD DVD players must have one. Obviously, having a direct internet connection makes firmware updates much easier, but it’s still possible to download the update to an external storage medium (e.g., USB thumbdrive) and transfer it over to the player that way.

Also, that pic is win.
