RUMOR: Blockbuster to rent DS titles; Grumpy Old Men still available photo

Play Nintendo has insider info on some upcoming movements by Blockbuster Video. In a bid to not become totally irrelevant in a world dominated by the Netflix's, the Gamefly's and the widespread-P2P-piracy's of the world, Blockbuster is going to start renting out titles for the Nintendo DS. They've been testing the ploy in select markets, and amazingly people want to rent games for portable consoles as much as they want to rent them for more traditional machines!

Why Blockbuster didn't start this practice two decades ago is anyone's guess, but if I had some sort of blog where it was my duty to make wild, unfounded guesses on these sorts of things, I would have to say that Blockbuster is terrified of going under, and since they are no longer the only game in town, they now have to match everything these online rental places can offer. Of course, the brick and mortar golem that is a company like Blockbuster can never hope to defeat the lithe, HTML phantom of Netflix, but it should be entertaining watching the once-proud company smash itself to bits trying to keep up.

[Thanks Smitty3000 for making me write a post totally devoid of humor. Jerk.]

Maybe it's just here in Canada, but I could swear that Blockbuster already rents DS games...

All the blockbusters around here (Halifax, NS, Canada) rent DS games, they have for some time now.

Mind you, they don't rent the more obscure and usually better of all the DS titles, just the more main stream ones.

Gonna be a pain to restore the save files every time we rent, but this is good news.

Over the years I started to like Blockbuster less and less, because they kept ditching all their good games. My local Blockbuster no longer carries Resident Evil 4, Zelda: Wind Waker, Super Mario Sunshine, or any other good Gamecube games. Their PS2 and Xbox sections aren't the greatest either. I started using GameFly a few months ago and I like it a lot more than I ever did Blockbuster.

There used to be other rental places nearby, one of which rented GBA games (and much older and obscure titles for much older systems). I hate renting handheld games because you can't save the data to a memory card (PSP is the exception), but I still often rent them from GameFly (since you can keep the game if you like it).

I hope Blockbuster does this so their selection doesn't suck quite so bad, but I still probably won't be renting them much. Except for Pokemon Ranger. I NEED THAT MANAPHY.

In 1993 I worked at an independently-owned video store that rented GameBoy, Game Gear and Lynx games. They were shortly thereafter bought out and replaced by a massive Blockbuster. All that space, and not enough room for handheld games.

Why would you rent a Pokemon game? That shit's bananas. B-A-N-A-N-A-S.

All the Blockbusters I've been to in the last year or so have rented PSP games, but not DS games. At each one of these, I've made a point to bring it up, hear a half-assed explanation, then shake my head, tell of what I now just call "The Glory", and walk away.

And they did have Gameboy games, and I think Gameboy Colors games. I still remember dropping to my knees in pain when they stopped having SNES games... just not right

Blockbuster used to rent DS titles. But during the beginning of the DS drought all Blockbusters started carrying more PSP stuff and making way for 360 stuff and had to lose something. So they ditched GBA/DS. I actually wrote a blog post about it. I was pretty pissed, the blog was posted on 12/2/05. So it happened in late 2005 when they made the change. I'm glad to hear they may be bringing it back again.

Haven't they been renting out PSP titles since the beginning? I bet that's been going just great for them...

Nice! I hope that'll apply to Canada, as I know someone who works at Blockbuster and get free rentals, and the DS is my favorite system.

Wow, great news...if I still rented games. I research enough to know exactly what I like and have not yet regretted one purchase of mine. If a game isn't worth a purchase, I wait until it drops in value. Renting is obsolete, for me at least.

Then again, once digital distribution takes over, I'm sure renting will become obsolete for the industry as well.

Blockbuster got burned pretty bad back in 91 with the Virtual Boy. They rented those out all over my area, and there they sat. They even splurged into Game Boy titles, but they could never keep decent stock. Given the high volume of shitty GB/GBA/DS titles that tend to sneak out onto the portable systems, it's no surprise they waited this long.

My local video stores all rent DS games, as far as I know. I mostly frequent Rogers Video, they definitely do, and I think it's country-wide in Canada for renting DS games.

Luckily my old buddy R4 saves me from renting.
