Rumor: Blizzard working on a first person MMO photo

All right, so during the week this story might be brushed off as a crazy unfounded rumor from a random French site, but it's the weekend and we're all about the crazy French during the weekend.

French gaming site NoFrag is reporting that they have a reliable source that has informed them that Blizzard's next game will be partly a first person MMO. Of course we all know Blizzard has been working on a new IP for some time now and that it is going to be an MMO, so it is expected that details would leak out at some point. Whether that point is now is dependent on how much faith you want to put in the French.

The site also claims that the game will take place in a futuristic world where players will have two lives. The first life will be a sort of Sims Online interactive social hub. This character will have the ability to connect to the second life, which will be where the fighting takes place and most likely the first person stuff. It sounds odd and extremely metaphysical to say the least.

To justify posting such a blatant rumor, let's end this with a question. What would you like to see the next MMO from Blizzard be?

Blizzard is working on a MMOFPS [NoFrag]

Did Blizzard sign some contract that only allowed them to make MMO's and Starcraft during this generation?

Because someone needs to tear that up so they can fire up production on Ghost again. Then I'll give them my money.

This makes complete sense. FPS games are big right now (although it doesn't especially say shooter), shooter RPGs are big right now, online shooters are big right now, and if MAG and the possible Infinity Ward MMO are any indication online-only shooters ares about to get a spin too.

And with the Starcraft license, yeah, I could totally buy into this.

Allow me to speculate on many number of things:

1: Blizzard is now ActivisionBlizzard(this is fact) so Blizzard is partnering with another activision owned(is it?) Developer, Infinity Ward. First Person futuristic MMO.

2: The long-desired World of StarCraft. Before I continue with this one, they claim a new IP, so its not WoS.

3: Blizzard makes great games. Their (seemingly) only misstep has been StarCraft: Ghost, going so far as to 'postpone it indefinitely'. But new IP, move along.

That's all I've got for now. What I'd like to see? World of StarCraft. Hands down, the second best series they have(IMO, duh). Since it's gotta be a new IP I couldn't even begin to fathom what it could be but if they put the same production value and time that they've put into WoW, they've got my $15/Month.

(Fun Fact: 'Tigole' left the WoW dev team to work on this new MMO. A lot of people attribute WoW no longer being enjoyable due to him switching to this new project, leaving WoW development in other hands.)

@MkShiranui: I wouldn't necessarily call it untested, just unsuccessful because of the few games that have tried to mix the genres together. I know it doesn't say MMOFPS but Planetside was the most famous attempt in that genre. I'm fairly confident Blizzard could do it right, they certainly have the resources and man-power.

A sci-fi/futuristic MMO would cashgrab the remaining holdouts who wouldn't play WoW because of the 'fantasy' theme. In fact, if WoW wasn't a spiritual successor to Diablo, I could see Blizzard successfully market, develop, launch and sustain all of their major franchises as successful MMO's.

@Peter An Pham: my feelings exactly.

The thing I'd most like to see is Blizzard working with GSC to make a first-person shooter STALKER MMORPG. It would make me so damn happy :D

And a lot of people attribute WoW being a lot more accessible, more diverse, more entertaining, and less life-leeching now that Tigole has gone.

I don't remember .hack containing any particularly original or interesting story elements. If you think the concept of a virtual life was created by Bandai, you must have missed out on the last hundred years of science fiction.

@gore on the floor: Didn't read my comment did you? That's basically what I said. IW / Blizz are both working on a new MMO and they're both Activision companies.. :P

@Faultymoose: Its cute looking at the pretty letters that you typed! /pats you. Now let us non-casual WoW players talk. :) --->The game is also no longer challenging--anyone can run easy-as-hell content for end-game gear, instances are constantly getting toned down for the select(loud) few who find it difficult and overall, the game just feels like Warcraft for dummies now.

I was completely expecting that Blizzard would officially announce this MMO at Blizzcon last year... but it looks like they'll be waiting for the con this year instead (if even that!). Great expectations is what I have for the new MMO, but you never know.

Also, it wouldn't make sense for Infinity Ward to be working with Blizzard on this, seeing as Blizz has developing this MMO for at least two years, and welll, IW put out MW2 last fall.

I think the French just got trolled tbh :p considering that basically sounds like the premise of the film Gamer; what with one half being a Sims online/Second Life style socialising place and the other half being a competitive FPS.

Yeah, I'm thinking people got trolled!

it would be likely that infinity ward and blizzard will be collaborating "if true" just because its common sense, infinity ward knows how to make a good fps, blizzard knows how to make a good mmo.

that would be my take if true.

I have quite a bit of faith in French leaks, I can't remember any from memory that were actually wrong. That said, this sounds quite likely. If this is leaking out now, I'd predict an announcement isn't far off.

The French have a very high unemployment rate, which means they're playing that many more video games. It's only logical they know more than we do.

Despite being a small amateur site NoFrag is usually highly reliable far more than any french sites and often more than big professionals english ones. They don't propagate rumors unless they have seen or heard the first hand material.
It's fair to assume the info is legit.

Maybe they got trolled yeah, but

remember that Vivendi (which Blizzard is part) is a french group.
Plus they're not going to release anything which could drives players away from WoW.
The three only other game gendra which are highly played are Sports Games, The Sims and FPS.
So it makes senses that they're trying a mix between the two you can mix.

Since most of Blizzard's games have been copies of other games except for Diablo series, I just can't phathom the thought of them making something completely new from scratch. Blackthorn, the Lost Vikings and SC Ghost keep popping into my brain for some reason.
