Rumor: BioWare working on KOTOR MMO, OMG! photo

Primotech is reporting that their sources (you know, the ones "close to BioWare") have confirmed that the company's upcoming MMO is indeed set in the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Universe

While their source doesn't offer any further information, the company has already confirmed that an MMO (due out in 2008) is being developed at their Austin studios. This is one of those rumors that has been around for awhile, and if we were to guess, may turn out to be true. No word on whether or not Electronic Arts (who recently acquired BioWare) will be involved.

So what do you guys think? The Xbox Knights of the Old Republic titles were some of the best games on the console, with some of the most compelling narrative elements of its time. But how do you think something like that would translate to an MMO?

I wonder if this is the MMORPG they're building using Simutronics' Hero Engine License they bought a while back?

(Any ex-Gemstone/Dragonrealms players on Dtoid? I'm guessing not.)

Does Bioware still have the rights to the KOTOR series? I remember Obsidian did the sequel. According to their Wikipedia page, they're on the table in the indefinite future for KOTOR 3, at LucasArts' call.

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes.

This is the MMO that'll be worth getting into. Elves and dwarfs had their time, and so did the entertainers and Masters of Teras Kasi or however the fuck you spell that.

It is time for the jedi to lob some heads off with lightsabres.

I just hope its not Xbox only, if one good thing comes from being owned by EA it'll be multiplatform.

PLEASE LET THIS BE TRUE.

It would be an awesome MMO (because Bioware is awesome), but more importantly it would help in resolving a lot of questions that lingered after KOTOR 2.

Bioware is dead, they are apart of the EA overmind, its going to suck and EA is going to gut Bioware just like they did Maxis and Westwood.

What could possibly go wrong with a Star Wars Based MMO?

They obviously need to get Raph Koster RIGHT ON THIS!
Variable Gear's Avatar
Variable Gear at 10/22/2007 19:28
A KOTOR MMO would be great. What I hear about Star Wars Galaxies is that what killed it was the time it was set. "The game events are set between the events of Episode IV: A New Hope, and Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back." Nothing important happens during this time in the Star Wars fiction, and because of the open and undefined nature of the Old Republic games a MMO set during the period could be really exciting!

The question is: does Bioware even own the IP? Doesn't Lucasarts own it? Bioware Austin could still develop the game as long as Lucasarts would sign off on it, but let's wait for the official announcement.

@ Wedge & Ryuhanta:

Jade Empire was decent, but it was a disappointment after KOTOR (at least to me). The gameplay was simplified and the storyline was a crock. That twist at the end was something they beat into your skull the entire fucking game.
bluemeep's Avatar
bluemeep at 10/22/2007 19:32
Jade Empire was KOTOR without the combat pausing and amazing story.

As for this, I pretty much assumed this is exactly what was going on from the moment the Bioware MMO rumor hit. As long as I can be one of 30 thousand Aayla Secura tribute characters, I'll be happy.

Yes. yes. yes. No offense to the Galaxy fans, but this is exactly what I want from a Star Wars MMO. Plus, an MMO set during the Mandalorian and Jedi Civil Wars would be epic win.

I'm tentatively excited. The KOTOR games rock. I'm not so sure how well an MMO will work, but I'll try anything - provided it doesn't mean we'll never see a KOTOR III now.

I think a KOTOR MMO would work, yeah, but like other people said, I would rather a proper sequel to the first two games.

I was actually kinda worried that this is what EA bought them for - to work on an MMO.

Bioware make the best single player RPGs around (in my opinion), its a waste using them to make an MMO. I'm sure some other company could have made this while Bioware got to work on Baldurs Gate 3 ;)

MMOs suck... and if this is ruined it's because of that. If they were just doing a KOTOR III (which they should do, to finish the story and fix what was done by the rushed piece of shit called KOTOR II), then it would be made of win and delicious cake.

KoTor is my favorite game of all time.

What sucks though is I don't like MMO's...then again I've yet to play them longer than a week but I get bored out of my mind.

If this is true I only hope that they do the KoTor series justice and who knows maybe this will be the first MMo that I like.

p.s. If you don't like KoTor then you suck at life. FACT.

KotoR and MMO cannot coexist in anything other than theme. You can't mix dynamic quests and branching storylines with the repetition and grinding MMO's use to hold players.

How is it that no one remembers that this has been rumored for months? From the moment Bioware opened their Austin studio this is what they were thought to be working on.

Fact: MMOs are fundamentally gimped in the story aspect to keep suckers coming back and paying more to keep grinding.

Sad reality: The possibilities of an epic storyline tied up in a masterstroke of a third game are falling like a sad, flaccid penis.
