Rumor: BioShock MMO in the works photo

We've heard from a mysterious source (possibly a roaming Ekans) that 2K Games, in addition to working on a new X-COM, is hard at work in a secret location and tinkering with a massively multiplayer online game set in the BioShock universe. Sounds crazy? So did an FPS X-COM, and we all know what's happened there.

2K has made no secret in the past of its interest in the MMO genre, and BioShock has been named as a potential candidate for exploitation before. The publisher is clearly interested in both huge online games and the continued profiteering of the BioShock franchise, so it wouldn't be too surprising to see both goals fuse and become one.

Obviously, this is a rumor from one of our MYSTERIOUS SOURCES, so take it with some salt before anything is announced. Would you play a BioShock MMO, though?

Bioshock gets a MMO, and NOT Pokemon?!
Granted, it's a rumor, and Pokemon is Nintendo property, but this is madness!
MADNESS!
No, I would not play.

I would just say that part of the point of Rapture is the emptiness. I've only played the first one though.

I've only played a little of the first one and none of the second one... yet. So correct me if I'm wrong (I know you will)

But isn't Rapture a little small and enclosed for an MMO? It's an underwater city right, but I figured a good MMO needs multiple cities and such?

Dunno, sure they'll find a way to do it.

i'll need to play through the first two first and REALLY fall in love with them to entertain the idea of paying monthly to play one.

So now there is an MMO rumor for Bioshock. First Fallout, then Call of Duty, and now this. If these rumors are true, then these publishers are completely missing the point on why people play these games INSTEAD OF MMOS! Next up, Deadly Premonition MMO. Population: Jim Sterling.

"Mysterious sources do NOT count as news stories."

No, they count as rumor stories. Hence the rumor tag. Pretty simple, really.

id play a bioshock mmo.. i think it would be neat to have horror aspects to a mmo but too bad one shares my vision of a resident evil mmo, if someone ever made that id be in heaven.

I could see it be a prequel like 2 multiplayer and focus on the fall of Rapture and everyone plays a run of the mill splicer? My only other guess is that it would pick up after Bioshock 2 and have Adam use spreading across the world.

I can see it being some fun in a bite sized chunk sort off way. But unless they were planning on introducing a lot of new kinds of enemies I don't really see how it would have any staying power. Although using a group of splicers trying to bring down a Big Daddy would have its charms.
They may always go the Global Agenda route. But wouldn't a hinted at MMO suggest they were satisfied with the popularity of the multiplayer? I thought it wasn't actually Thát popular.

(On a unrelated subject: Jim is there any e.t.a. on something on Plain Sight? I'd like to hear your impressions.)

I wouldn't play it, I just prefer my soul generally un-sucked into the dark void that MMOs amount to. I will however say that it's a world and fiction that could easily sustain an MMO, and it's one that is genuinely fascinating.

I don't see the need to overthink things here. What it comes down to is... if it's a fun game, I'll play it. If it's not, I won't. It's that simple.

As someone who skipped BioShock 2 and doesn't play MMOs, I can honestly say that I'd be very interested in a BioShock MMO. Especially one set before it's downfall, with most if not all of it's expanse availablr for you to explore.

When would this take place? What classes would you have? How many would be fun? How could they balance them? How could they justify the balance? Why is this even a rumor?
That means at least one person thought this would be a good idea and that is not good.

I think the amount of people judging this already are a little ridiculous. Rapture has amazing potential to be populated in an MMO universe. It COULD take place after the Fall. maybe a new "Andrew Ryan" came to be and started a new, improved, BIGGER (multiple raptures?) city.

There are endless possibilities with an MMO and a fresh universe that hasn't been fully fleshed out. If it's a rumor, let it die, if it's real, give it a chance to shed some details before you judge. If MMO's aren't for you, that doesn't mean the game will suck. Relax.

@Sexualchocolate: picture rapture being an underwater Newyork, now picture an MMO in that metropolis, believe me its huge.

I've never been into mmo's so I wouldnt play it but it does sound intriguing or completely lame I can't decide brain aneurism!

I think Rapture is a brilliant setting; it's big, it's distinctive as hell. That said, I wouldn't play a Bioshock MMO. How weird would it be to have numbers appearing over a Big Daddy's head as your character does the same set of animations over and over while you hit him with the wrench?

I mean maybe it could be a FPS MMO -- sorta like turning Borderlands into one. I dunno. Still wouldn't play it.

I forsee an eve online clone centered around upgrading your big daddy and little sister team so that you can efficiently mine as much Adam as possible. The meta game of course will be developing plasmids that can drive the entire general populace to ruin and insanity as quickly as possible.

Why does everything good have to have the "Ooh, let's make it an MMO!" idea hurled at it? It isn't always a cash cow, and judging from what I experienced from BioShock 2, I'm not looking forward to another one anytime soon that doesn't have Ken Levine directly at the helm.

They'll never get 1 million subscribers on a game like this, what with it's violence and all. There would be no way to accurately convey the BioShock universe in a friendly and welcoming environment. MMOs need to have mass appeal. This just isn't feasible and I'm sure 2K knows that.

Somebody probably overheard somebody else throwing out ideas in a meeting or something. I bet nothing even comes of this.

No no no no no mo and no. One of the hugest appeals of Rapture is feeling alone and isolated in a sea of madness. Don't MMO the game, don't make Rapture suck even more than it did in the 2nd game.(Not significantly suckier than the first game, i just didn't like it as much, but the game is still amazing) it's just ridiculous.
