Makes sense. I thought they were going to do this ever since I saw there were so many empty channels on my wii home screen.
Definitely a good call, very likely to be true. Xbox is becoming more of an entertainment center, consoles are going to be running your living room. Really hope nintendo dont screw this up.

All I want is a web browser that isn't super slow. For the most part I have no use for non-gaming apps because I can just use my laptop, but I guess more diversity isn't a bad thing. It's not like this is going to get in the way of Nintendo developing games, so I'm okay with this.
3DS already does apps. Swapnote is a great one. And Netflix is another.

I'm all for the media-center/console experience. But, please, give me the chance to watch movies without having to buy a dedicated DVD/BR player, even if it means giving a few bucks to Sony.

regardless nintendo will always be a secondary console to me now. doesnt matter how many apps or what not, ill still be gaming on the ps4 and pc. ohhh except for zelda and if nintendo finally decides on new ips.
Do not care about multimedia. I already have two other boxes that have been tripping over themselves to do that for the last 2 years.

Hmm, this is a wise move on Nintendo's part. I'm looking forward to some app to game cross-compatibility, and hope this just isn't a rumor. It would definitely give the system a defining feature.

Rumors support they are in bed with EA and Origin for there online. Also Valve is intrested in bringing Steam to it if EA doesn't convince them otherwise.
......... so the wii will have an app store ..... and non game apps ..... like most every other electronic device already has. you can load apps directly to your TV for gods sake. At this point why does the WiiU even need that?

Seriously? If I want utility I'll just use my iPod Touch or cell phone. I don't see how using a game system for something other than games is necessary in any way, especially a home console. There's that beautiful thing called personal computers for that.

If the tablet controllers are going to be expensive, they had better have applications that can run on it. I would like the controller to be able to function as a regular tablet, with or without the WiiU being nearby.

Man, I hope Steam gets integrated. I mean, it'd be cool if both Origin AND Steam could be on there somehow, but if I had to choose between the two, I'd pick Steam every time.

Kind of cool I guess, though I really have no need. I would never really consider using any social network sites or browsing the internet from my console. If I wanted to do that I would use my computer or my phone.
If they put a drawing program on the Wii U, I want to save my stuff to an SD card and load it on a PC.

You can only connect a maximum of two tablets to the Wii U as it is, and it already comes with one. I don't think the price thing is an issue anymore.

Exactly. Not everything has to be an "all in one" device. I wouldn't mind if the Wii U doesn't even have DVD playback. Actually, I prefer if it doesn't, if it keeps the price down. I have 9 devices in my house that can play DVDs. That's only including ones that are hooked up.

Steam would definitely be the better of the two. But even if they make a deal with EA, it will still have better online than if Nintendo went it alone.

Enh. For me, it's nice to have it all. Personally, I think the PS3 has games, better online service, and more PSN offerings - and it plays Blu-Ray, AND is a really nice media center than can run 100% of what I have on my PC. The 360 does all that but Blu-Ray.
It's not just the issue of a "DVD player" - it's a full media center that basically takes the place of a PC media center is a really, really nice cherry on top.

That's a good point. My PS3 has served me well as a media player. Movies, music, MLB TV, games, YouTube, etc. I just don't expect the Wii U to have these features, and I don't mind if they don't. Netflix is a step forward for the Wii though. It works very well, and I use it when PSN is down.

i don't think this could hurt the company. they really need to appeal to all audiences and make up for the wiis short comings. more apps that take advantage of the tablet controller is good. they just need to make sure they make the apps fun and interesting. make us want them.
That would be very odd. I would think that it would open them up to more sorts of online pirates and the such.

I would certainly like it if it were able to function as more than a gaming device. I would especially like it if it had playback support for the wide range of video formats that I legally export all of my legally bought movies to. Legally. This would mean that I wouldn't have to but a new HTPC (or HTMAC?).
I think apps would be interesting on WiiU. If I could jump on Steam from the WiiU tablet and leave a tv show playing on the tv set, that would be awesome. I'd love to play TF2 on that tablet.

I'm really hoping for Steam integration. I don't want Origin anywhere near the Wii-U. If the apps are anything like Swap Note, I'll be pleased.

Exactly, plus don't forget about Sakura Samurai: Art of the Sword. All 4 of these games were made by Nintendo 1st Party Studio's, but people still act like Nintendo never makes any new IP's. People complained that Nintendo never makes downloadable games, but when they do make them. People don't recognize that those game as new IP's, because there just small downloadable games, so Nintendo just can't win. Nintendo gives people what they say they want, and those same people still complain about it!

The fact that NOA had to practically be dragged kicking and screaming into releasing it in North America doesn't fill a lot of people with optimism either way.

Nintendo has been talking about online for 2 straight generations, and then they've done the least of the big three. Quite frankly, I don't think they will do this, ceratinly not in the way many of you all think. There will probably be some dumb restrictions. And I doubt they will even have many apps. They'll have like netflix and youtube, and that's about it. People will keep asking them "hey, when are going to finally release some new apps?" Just like they do today with their localization releases.
