Rumor: Alpha Protocol getting a major delay photo

Spy thriller RPG Alpha Protocol was supposed to be shipping to stores in the last week of October. We were all going to get our hands on the exciting action of the spy world and see if their whole "branching conversation" thing was as revolutionary as they touted it to be. However, plans might have changed. Like the spy world the game takes place in, nothing is for certain, but two separate retailers are now listing the game as coming out in June of next year. That's a pretty hefty delay for a game that was so close to launch.

GameStop now has the game listed for a June 1 release date and Amazon.ca has it penned in for June 30. The month long gap can be explained by the two companies most likely hearing of a June release and GameStop being a bit more generous with what that meant, but it doesn't explain why they've changed it as no official word on a game delay has come down from SEGA. This isn't the first delay for the game either, so if it is true it raises some serious questions about what they have to keep fixing or if those rumored complaints about it were true. Hopefully this long delay is either not true or simply made to dodge the holiday rush. Devs do seem to be realizing that spreading their games out throughout the year is a good idea.

Needs more Mass Effect clearly.

Seriously that conference release shit fucked over any chance this game had at standing on it's own. I don't want to but now everytime I see this game I'm gonna think Mass Effect.

That's very disappointing news, but it's not like there aren't plenty of other games to play over the next few months.

Oh well.

The holiday rush? What holiday rush? All the games have left and are long gone.

Great, now Obsidian is gonna have to destroy what was looking like a great game just because Sega wants more "RPG" in it >_<
Why does Sega want me to hate them so much?
Why?

Well, guess it's time to pull this pre-order too...

Ehh, I dont hate this, cause I was spending too much Cash this fall already. This will be good because it wont get buried in the shuffle, it will be playable in the summer when I have more time and it wont compete too much with ME2. We needed more games released in the summer anyway.

I made my pre-order on Steam based on it's Oct release date. While delays can be expected, having to wait 8 extra months is bullshit.

Steam had better be willing to offer refunds.

Wow Sega is one to talk about quality in publishing after Empire.

@Neo Rena

I have a feeling Sega has no idea what an RPG is. After Mask of the Betrayer I'm willing to say Obsidian still has some of that Black Isle magic in there.

Hopefully this delay will ensure a better game released during a time period that will improve sales. Oh wait.... early 2010... that's suicide...

"I'm not surprised seeing how Obsidian has had more than a few "unfinished" games they released. The big one being KOTOR2 which was extremely underwhelming compared to the first game"

What? They've only made 2 games and 2 expansion packs. If you're going to blame someone for KOTOR2, blame Lucas Arts foran unfinished game on the market. If it had the proper polish and finishing touches, it would have blown the first one away.

I hope they take all the time they need with Alpha Protocol. I want that game to be perfect.

@Yehat - Doesn't really matter how much Obsidian knows about RPG's (which is alot) when Sega is there every step of the way saying "needs more HP bars" and "needs more EXP!" or w/e they think an RPG is...

This is slightly laughable about that big bomb dropped the other day.

Hopefully they make the game really standout and above the first Mass Effect and not just attempt to clone it, and most likely come short. The game has alot of potential and I for one am happy for the delay since I have every single month till then pretty much filled already with 3 games to buy.

I'm not even kidding, and I don't see how I'll have the time to play every one. :/

why do you guys all automatically assume this is sega's fault?

Maybe the game wasn't good enough yet to be released. I mean damn, you bitched when lucas arts ''rushed'' KOTR2 out the door, and now Obsidian are getting time to actually polish the product, you are bitching about it being delayed instead of just rushed out?
Xzyliac's Avatar - Comment posted on 09/28/2009 07:13

@AdamantiumHip
Err...look at the evidence. I mean I'm not bitching but I'd be lying if I said it didn't look like Sega.

And maybe you're right and the game just isn't ready. That'd still be Sega's call if the conference leak has anything to do with it. I don't think anyone is saying it's bad that it's delayed (well okay some of us are). Just we all know why and it's Sega trying to one-up Mass Effect for some stupid reason. Now that's all you're gonna hear about. ME vs. AP.

what evidence? That sega wants an RPG it's funding with it's own money to be more like an rpg? That sounds reasonable to me. It's their money, they know the type of game they want.

If it was rushed out, you know you would be the first one bitching about how evil sega didnt give the developers enough time, or how the game isn't rpg enough. I practically would have guarenteed it.

As long as it's a good game, that's all I care about, and if it's delayed, it's delayed for a reason. I doubt sega decided to forgoe potential profits for this year because it wants to screw you out of a great game.
